LG Optimus LTE headed to AT&T as the Nitro HD

We’ve seen a few leaks and videos of the LG Optimus LTE but today we have a little treat, and that is this 4G LTE 720p packing smartphone is headed to AT&T as the LG Nitro HD. It was spotted in the wild back in September and was just recently launched on Bell Canada. With Bell sharing the same frequencies as AT&T we had a feeling it was coming soon, but this gives us even more confirmation.

We’ve heard rumors of a LG phone rocking a 1280 x 720p HD display since way back in May when we first saw the codename for the Optimus LTE (P930) but now that its officially here I’m sure you’ll want a refresh on the specs. The LG Optimus LTE rocks a 4.5″ 1280 x 720p HD display, a powerful 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage and a fat 1830 mAh battery to keep things running. Here’s a quick video showing off the Optimus LTE (aka Nitro HD for AT&T).
LG Optimus LTE

We also have an 8 megapixel camera on the rear and a 1.3 MP front camera for video chat like we’ve just seen in the video above. Clearly he makes a mistake as the screen is 720p and not 760 but we’ll cut him a break, technology moves fast. One important thing to note is the 1280 x 720p panel is what LG calls their “NOVA” technology and its said to be much brighter, sharper, and clearer than the Pentile Matrix used in the upcoming Galaxy Nexus. Once this hits the market here in the US we’ll be sure to get one in for review as soon as possible and will definitely be checking out that HD display.

LG confirms Optimus LTE heading to Bell in Canada

Late last month we mentioned that the Optimus LTE smartphone from LG was heading to Canada and would be landing on Bell. At the time, the thought was that the smartphone would be called the eye when it hit Bell. LG has confirmed that the Optimus LTE will be hitting Bell in Canada officially, but offers no firm launch date.

All LG is saying is that the smartphone will hit Bell “in the coming weeks.” Bell is still mum on when it will launch the device. It would be ideal that the smartphone would be launch before the holidays, but that remains to be seen. It’s also worth noting that the official LG press release says nothing about the smartphone being called the Eye on Bell. The device will operate on the Bell 4G LTE network and will have a 4.5-inch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720.
The display is a True HD IPS unit and should look great with promised natural color and battery efficiency. The Optimus LTE has a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, an 1830 mAh battery, and an 8MP rear camera. It also has HDMI output and supports DLNA. We still expect to see this smartphone hit carriers in the US as well. However, there is now official word on a launch outside Canada at this time.

LG Prada K2 hits the FCC, sports NFC

We still don’t know a whole lot regarding the new LG Prada K2 smartphone but apparently its already hitting the FCC this week. This ultra-thin device codenamed the P940 is the third iteration of the Prada name and won its FCC approval today and could be headed to markets soon with Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

It was first spotted in the wild late last month in a few leaked photos looking very sleek and actually quite nice. Rumors have it to be packing a 4.3″ 1280 x 720p HD display and possibly a dual-core processor but for now those details are still under a lock and key because the FCC filing sure didn’t reveal much. One thing we did learn, the LG Prada K2 should be rocking some NFC capabilities whenever it comes to the market, but we still aren’t even sure it will see a US launch.

In the rest of the leaked photos linked to above we see an ultra-thin design, a front facing camera and what we are hearing is also an 8 megapixel shooter around back. LG has used Qualcomm chipsets in the recent past and we are expecting a similar 1.5 GHz dual-core processor on board here like many recently released HTC smartphones — but again that has not been confirmed. Packing GSM/EDGE bands 850 and 1900, as well as the 1900 WCDMA band. It is also only 8.8mm thin so should be giving the Galaxy S II a run for its money. When we hear or find more details we’ll be sure to update. Head to the source link below if you’d like to dig through the filings yourself.

LG Optimus U1 to be first LG phone tasting Ice Cream Sandwich

This sure looks interesting. What appears to be either an excellent render or some actual images of the new LG Optimus U1 have appeared. The device sure looks thin and apparently may end up being the very first LG phone to run off the new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. While the name U1 is most likely just a code name, we don’t have much else to go on so that is what we’re calling this sleek and thin device.

I don’t know about you guys but it looks quite similar to the Galaxy S II with a hint of LG around the edges. According to sources this will be the first device by LG offered with Ice Cream Sandwich, but then seeing that dedicated home button smack dab in the middle has me seriously doubting this already. Why put the big chrome button in the middle then launch with ICS, unless this is a phone coming soon that will get updated to ICS, then it would make more sense.
We don’t have any hardware specs to go off of, but looking at the leaked image I’d say we have a 4.3″ device here. We can clearly see the 8MP camera around back and the extremely thin and sleek design, but then I also see a few dots near that home button so it could be Android, but could also run Windows Phone 7 — just saying. One thing worth mentioning is that just because ICS has built in navigation and home buttons doesn’t mean manufacturers will move to no dedicated home buttons on all devices. So that doesn’t necessarily rule this out for ICS, but I do have my doubts.
What does everyone think? Will we start seeing all devices that ship with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich have no dedicated buttons, or will OEM’s still try to be different from the pack and include a few? We’d love to hear your thoughts or preferences.

Verizon rolls out Gingerbread OTA update for the LG Revolution

The LG Revolution hit Verizon back in May, and contrary to the manufacturer’s suggestion, life was not good for Android fans eager for a taste of Gingerbread. Verizon is now pushing out the Android 2.3 update across its network with the standard upgrades and bug fixes. For the record, the Revolution is getting the update a mere 10 months after the Gingerbread source code was released, and five months after it hit the market with Froyo.

According to Verizon’s update page, additions to the standard featureset include a reworked text selection system, proper HDMI support and an Airplane Mode free of bugs. More under-the-hood fixes like email folder display, better attachment support, SIM card messages, and a SIM card security alert. The software is version VS910ZV7, and you can either wait for the staggered rollout message to appear or initiate a manual update via the Settings menu.
You might want to hold off on that, however. Verizon’s software updates have had a nasty habit of backfiring as of late, as in the HTC ThunderBolt and DROID BIONIC. In the case of the former, a critical bugged caused the carrier to pull the Gingerbread update just days after releasing it months late. Those desperate for Gingerbread can take their chances, of course, but caution might be in order for a week or so. Of course, you could always go rogue and root your phone for some nice custom ROM action, via CyanogenMod 7 or others.

LG Optimus series Android 2.3 updates rolling out now

If you are a user of the LG Optimus series of smartphones the Android Gingerbread 2.3 update is ready to head your way right now in Europe. There are several models in the Optimus range and the models will get the update in a staggered launch. According to the LG Facebook page, the first to get the update will be the Optimus 2X.

The 2X should be getting the update as of November 1, which is today. The Optimus 3D will get the update starting on November 21. After that update, the Optimus Black will get the nod starting on November 28. After the rollouts are made in Europe, Android 2.3 will come to the device globally according to LG. LG notes that the exact timing of the launch globally will vary with each market.
There are some commenting on the Facebook post saying that the update for the 2X isn’t available OTA or via the updater right now. I can only image the riot that Optimus owners will start if the 2.3 update turns out to be flawed and slow after waiting this long to get Gingerbread. LG recently announced that the 2X would not get an upgrade to Android 4.0 so this Gingerbread update may be the last some LG owners see.

LG Revolution Android 2.3 Update on the way

We heard a little chatter regarding the 2.3 Gingerbread update for the 4G LTE packing LG Revolution this week and now the official details have been revealed. If you’ve been waiting for some Gingerbread treats you are in luck because Verizon is all set to push the OTA to your Revo and have just released the update documents today.

The changelog is pretty small and actually doesn’t reveal much except for a few bug fixes. We don’t really need a breakdown of what to expect from Gingerbread as we should all be well aware by now. A new download manager, copy/paste improvements, better browser performance and the usual user interface changes that came with Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

The support documents do specifically mention a few details regarding emails showing in the correct order, attachment size fixes as well as some improvements to the overall HDMI-out experience. The Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the LG Revolution appears to be around 87.8MB in size and should start hitting devices any time now and be done within a week. As usual feel free to manually check for updates through settings > about phone > check for updates.

LG DoublePlay launching November 2nd on T-Mobile

Have you got a hankering for a unique dual-screen form factor and a T-Mobile account? Then you might want to mark November 2nd on your calendar. TmoNews got a hold of a T-Mobile inventory screenshot that says that’s the day the LG DoublePlay (AKA the Flip II) will be released on the carrier.

If you’re not familiar with the DoublePlay, it’s a Gingerbread phone with a slide-out keyboard dominated by a tiny secondary screen. The phone itself is mid-range by today’s standards, with a 3.5-inch main screen at 480 x 320, 1GHz processor and a 5MP-720p camera. In addition to basic app shortcuts, LG’s custom APIs will allow apps to take advantage of the lower screen for custom apps. Like most of the new phones on T-Mobile, it takes advantage of the carrier’s HSPA+ “4G” network.
There’s still no official word from T-Mobile about pricing or availability, but the new leak lines up with a previous leak that places the “Flip II” on the same date with a 149.99 price. Naturally, that’s with a two-year contract. The phone is unique to say the least, and one of the really cool things about Android’s open source nature is that it allows for these little oddities that might not make it to market otherwise.

LG Optimus LTE comes to Bell Canada as the Eye

Just a few weeks ago LG unveiled its jaw-dropping Optimus LTE to spec junkies the world over, and those living in the great white north can get a crack at it on Bell soon. In Canada the phone will be known as the LG Optimus Eye, paying homage to its 8 megapixel/1080p rear camera. That’s not what will be turning the eye of Canadian consumers, however.

No, what makes the Optimus Eye stand out is its massive 4.5-inch screen running a full 1280 x 720 screen, and with a true IPS LCD panel, the it’ll be as crisp and clear as a February morning in Ottawa. That’s an iPhone 4-besting 329 pixels per inch. The hardware hits just keep coming with this one: a 1.5GHz dual-core processor should let Android Gingerbread fly on the Eye, and 4G LTE speeds will make sure that the wireless connection is no hindrance. Bell’s retail chain The Source was kind enough to post a preview video starring a genuine “Tech Expert” (who, by the way, erroneously says that the phone has a 1280 x 760 screen):

Bell is still mum on the price or availability of the LG Optimus Eye, but with an official marketing rollout expect news in the next few weeks. With this kind of top-shelf hardware you can expect a high price tag to boot, but for the time being Canadians will have to wait patiently. There’s still no word on the Optimus LTE making its way south to the United States.

LG DoublePlay packs QWERTY keyboard and touchscreens

I know that there are lots of smartphone users out there that would like to have their cake and eat it too. These folks are looking for a smartphone with a touchscreen and a nice QWERTY physical keyboard for typing. T-Mobile has landed a new LG smartphone called the DoublePlay that is an Android Gingerbread 2.3 smartphone with some nice features for those wanting real buttons.

The smartphone has a 5MP rear camera and should hit T-Mobile USA stores in time for holiday gift giving. Details on this smartphone leaked last week, but the official word from T-Mo brings almost all the details that you want to know. The front main screen is a 3.5-inch unit and the smaller screen between the keyboards is a 2-inch unit. That 5MP rear camera has 720p HD video recording capability.
The processor is a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon and the software for the phone has been customized to allow the secondary screen to show different elements of the same app or to allow you to run two apps at once. Now you can play Angry Birds while feeding Om Nom with some rope cutting. The smartphone also has WiFi, Bluetooth, and HSPA+ 4G connectivity. Pricing is still unknown as is the official launch, but we should hear more around the National Texting Championship kicking off October 26.

LG’s dual-screen Doubleplay / Flip II leaks in new promo shots

The beautiful thing about Android is that its software flexibility allows manufacturers to try out all sorts of interesting form factors. We spotted a new one in the Flip II, which we know is headed for T-Mobile thanks to a leaked roadmap. New press shots show the phone in its dual-screen glory and sporting a new manufacturer designation, the LG Doubleplay.

Unlike the Kyocera Echo, the Doubleplay’s secondary screen is a smaller one sitting on the slide-out keyboard. From the photos it looks like it’s about 1.5 inches diagonally, with perhaps a 240 x 180 resolution (just a guess based on the 480 x 320 main display). So far we’ve only seen what look like app shortcuts on the smaller screen, flanked by a thumb-friendly split keyboard. While an Echo-style dual screen APK is certainly possible, it isn’t all that likely, as the hardware looks decidedly mid-range. If you look closely on the photo above, you can see a 5-megapixel rear camera, and the software appears to be 2.3 Gingerbread with some LG customizations.
The T-Mobile branded version of the Doubleplay is called the Flip II, though that phone has a more muted color scheme. According to the latest leaked plans from the carrier, it’ll be available on November 2nd for $149.99 on a 2-year contract. The device will feature HSPA+ bands for T-Mobile’s “4G” network. Expect an official announcement soon, as other devices like the LG myTouch and myTouch Q have already had official press debuts.

Sweet 3D game converter for LG Optimus 3D hits download in Europe

Back in August during IFA 2011, we talked a bit about the 3D game converter that LG was showing off at the show. The game converter is intended to allow the owners of the LG Optimus 3D smartphone to turn all their 2D video games into 3D games on the fly. That will mean that all of your favorite games can now be enjoyed in 3D.

Optimus 3D owners in Europe will be able to get the new converter in the first Maintenance Release (MR) this month. LG notes that over the next few weeks the MR will be rolled out to other countries allowing other owners to get in on the 3D gaming action. The 3D Game Converter from LG is the first software engine that allows the conversion of Open GL-based 2D games to 3D and then back again at any time.
LG says that the only requirement for the game engine to work is that the game runs Open GL and uses landscape mode. In the future LG will add more cool features to the Optimus 3D. The features will include a 3D video editor that runs on the device, 2D viewing of 3D videos in single screen mode, Dolby Mobile sound, and automatic 2D video stabilization. The game converter can be installed using WiFi by checking for software updates or via a computer.

Trinity Kernels for Nexus S and G2x receive updates

If you are one of the many that indulge in the rooting, overclocking, and general tweaking of your Android phones this will be some great news if you own one of the mentioned devices. The extremely popular Trinity kernels by Morfic have all been updated with some awesome improvements to both top speed, and for those battery conscious users that also want great performance.

Update: It appears just the Nexus received updates today, check em out anyways because I hear they are awesome.
Mainly built for the Nexus S and S 4G, he also compiles awesome kernels for the LG G2x. Morfic’s main focus is on the Nexus S and we have kernels that range from underclocked and undervolted for extremely great battery life at just 880 Mhz, all the way up to 1.54 Ghz for the single-core Nexus S. Today’s latest update the new TEUV kernel has been completely tweaked and improved for top battery life and performance both. Lowering the Nexus S from the stock 1.0 Ghz down to .88 GHz (880 MHz), this gives the device amazing battery life while still managing to perform as good or better than almost any other single-core (and some dual-core) phones on the market.
This is just a few of the many reasons we choose to root and toy with our Android smartphones. We’ve covered Trinity kernels before and with its help our G2x reached blazing fast speeds and list topping benchmarks. Then the Nexus S scoring well over 5000 in quadrant thanks to Trinity and CM7.
I know benchmarks, overclocking, and tweaking isn’t for everyone — but for those that do the Trinity kernels are worth giving a try that is for sure. Since these types of things are to be done at your own risk, as always proceed with caution and if you are considering giving a few of these a try yourself you should already know how. All the details, downloads, and versions are available at the source link below. — Thanks Simms

T-Mobile myTouch and myTouch Q are now official

Yes, we knew that T-Mobile was about to roll out a couple of myTouch devices earlier yesterday morning, but here is an official statement from the mobile carrier themselves on the myTouch and myTouch Q – whereby both LG smartphones were specially designed to be easy to use, and is touted to be an introductory handset to those who are about to plunge into the world of smartphones for the first-time.
In order to make them accessible rigth from the get go, LG decided to throw in two different styles of hardware – the myTouch comes with a 3.8″ touch screen display and a virtual keyboard with Swype, while those who prefer a physical QWERTY keyboard to go along with the 3.5″ touch screen display can always settle for the myTouch Q.

T-Mobile myTouch and myTouch Q by LG are official, coming before the holidays

After weeks of leaks and teases, T-Mobile just let us know that the newest members of the myTouch line will be arriving “in time for the holiday season” – which probably means November 2nd. The T-Mobile myTouch and T-Mobile myTouch Q are both manufactured by LG, the first myTouch phones not made by HTC. We’ve finally got full specs for you to check out below.

Both phones feature Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a 1GHz processor and 5-megapixel cameras with 720p recording capability. Happily, both will operate on T-Mobiles’ HSPA+ “4G” network. That’s where the physical similarities end: the myTouch is a 3.8-inch slate phone with a Swype virtual keyboard, while the myTouch Q is a slider with a full QWERTY keyboard and a 3.5-inch screen. The myTouch also features a front-facing camera with Qik integrated.
The T-Mobile branded phones will have Netflix’s Android streaming app and T-Mobile TV built-in, along with the line-standard “Genius Button.” T-Mobile neglected to mention the price for either phone, but according to a recent roadmap leak, they’ll both be $129.99 on-contract. You’ll be able to get the myTouch in either black or white, while the myTouch Q will come in gray or violet colors.

LG Optimus LTE delivers dual-core 4G

LG has officially announced the LG Optimus LTE, the handset previously known as the LU6200, packing a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 4.5-inch 1280 x 720 resolution display and 4G LTE connectivity. The high-speed smartphone – set to go on sale on South Korea’s SK Telecom tomorrow, October 5 – has an 8-megapixel camera with an LED flash and HD video recording.

There’s also DLNA support and an HDMI output, for getting your multimedia off the smartphone either wired or wirelessly. LG is hoping you’ll watch some of it on the Optimus LTE’s display itself, however: the phone uses one of the company’s “IPS True HD” panels which, it claims, will beat the Samsung Galaxy S II HD LTE to the market and be the first such resolution panel on offer. 326ppi is not to be sniffed at, after all.
What’s still up in the air is availability outside of South Korea. After all, LG knows there are LTE networks in the US and elsewhere, and so we wouldn’t be surprised to see broader sales after the initial roll-out this week.

LG Optimus 3D Update with 3D Conversion for Games Rolling Out Now

A while back we learned LG planned to up its 3D ante by providing a software update to their Optimus 3D that would provide tools to bring standard 2D games into the third dimension. That update, build number V10K, is rolling out now to some European Optimus 3D handsets. LG has compiled a list of compatible titles, but most games should be eligible for a run at 3D provided they are built on OpenGL (though a drop in performance may be noticed).
The update is currently only available using LG’s PC update utility, though it should eventually begin moving out over the air. For everyone else there is the XDA link below.

LG myTouch appears on T-Mobile website

It seems that T-Mobile has dropped another hint regarding the upcoming myTouch line of smartphones on their network. Most likely this is only a mistake and no tip at all but what we have here is another sighting of the LG myTouch Q headed for T-Mobile. All previous myTouch devices were manufactured by HTC so this is going in a different direction.

Shown in the image above, the HTC Sensation has been replaced with some sort of unknown device. We’ve already seen this design before and it is the recently leaked LG Mytouch Q saw a few weeks back. We’ve seen leaks that suggest two models of the myTouch will be released, one being a slider but nothing has been confirmed although this is the second sighting this month.

If you look at the image above, a few Chrome users pointed out that after right clicking and inspecting the elements of the web page (awesome Chrome feature btw) you can clearly see the image being labeled as the “LG myTouch”. Looks like someone over at T-Mobile had a little oopsies and uploaded the wrong image. We still don’t know much regarding this new LG smartphone although the earlier leaks suggested a possible 1280 x 720p HD display and two models coming to town. At this rate we should know plenty more soon so sit back and wait for more details, as they are on their way.

Sprint Puts The Kibosh On Buggy LG Optimus S Gingerbread Update

Two weeks ago we told you how Sprint users were finally about to get some Gingerbread for their LG Optimus S handsets, just a few weeks after the update became available for the international Optimus One. Things were looking good, and we noted "assuming nothing goes wrong and forces it to halt distribution, it should hit nearly every subscriber with an Optimus S within about ten days." Oh, how we should have knocked on wood! It turns out that the update has been wreaking havoc on the Optimus S, breaking so much functionality that Sprint's withdrawn the update.

Sprint acknowledges the problem on its forums, promising that it and LG were working on diagnosing the issues and assuring users that the halt on the update's distribution is only temporary; once things are worked out, the Optimus S will finish getting Gingerbread.

So, what's going wrong? Oh, just a few small problems like an inability to get online, your PC not recognizing the phone when plugged-in over USB, refusal to recognize the presence of microSD cards, and finding itself in a state where it will no longer recharge while powered-on, eventually running the battery down to nothing. Predictive text is also turning-up broken, but compared to the rest of these issues, it seems positively minor. There are some suggested fixes for these individual issues, but no word on when an update addressing all of them may become available.

LG Esteem officially announced, headed to MetroPCS

Today LG has officially announced their new higher end Android smartphone for MetroPCS. This may not be a top tier high end smartphone, but for MetroPCS it’s one of the best they have to offer and is available now. Earlier last week the LG Esteem was first leaked online and it spilled the beans on all the details and specs including Gingerbread, and 4G LTE.

The hardware specs are nicely rounded off with a 4.3″ WVGA display, 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 512MB of RAM, and a 5 megapixel camera on the rear with LED flash. The Esteem will also offer a 1.3 MP camera for chatting up front, 8GB internal storage with micro-SD support, and even comes with micro-HDMI out as well. A nice well equipped smartphone if you ask me. If you didn’t know this is basically the LG Revolution, but for MetroPCS.
That’s not all either, we also have Android 2.3 Gingerbread and 4G LTE on board making this the best smartphone offered by MetroPCS. With 4G LTE smartphone plans starting at just $40 dollars this makes a great alternative to other options in the 4G LTE realm. Available right now Metro’s offering the Esteem for $250 with no contract (with a mail in rebate sadly). Along with the purchase users will get Rhapsody unlimited free for 90 days as an added bonus. Head over to MetroPCS.com for full details.
