Google Nexus S Appears in White

Potential owners of Google/Samsung Nexus S smartphone now have another (albeit purely aesthetic) reason to choose that device over Apple’s iPhone 4: it will probably be available in white color.
We say probably because all we have now is a couple of images of the white version of the device, showing that Samsung has once again opted for a black front and a white back combination instead of making the Nexus S uniformly white.
Still, if you’re adamant about having a powerful, white, touchscreen smartphone, the Nexus S might be your best bet, as the white iPhone 4 has been as elusive as the Yeti and, last we heard, it won’t hit the stores before spring 2011. There’s no word on when the white Nexus S might appear in stores, but we’re hoping it’ll be sooner than that.

Another official NASA app now available: NASA 360

A few weeks ago, NASA released its first Android app in the Market. It’s called NASA Spinoff – a client for NASA’s yearly publication about successfully commercialized NASA technology. One of the app’s highlights is a cool time-line of NASA inventions.
Space nerds rejoice, because NASA has now launched its second Android app: NASA 360. It gives you full access to the show of the same name, which is a half-hour video podcast that airs on over 450 TV stations across America. NASA 360 is meant to encourage people to pursue work in the fields of technology, science, and engineering, and it tries to illustrate how NASA has changed life on Earth.
The app even gives us all associated documentation and episode transcripts. NASA 360 is available for free in the Market, and it’s just a 300KB download.

WidgetLocker Lets You Customize Your Lock Screen, Available In The Market

WidgetLocker, by TeslaCoil Software, is a lock screen replacement app that offers a great deal of extras along with personal customization.  The app assists in preventing you from requiring needless multiple steps to drill down and get back to an apps interface.  You can do it all directly from the lock screen.  The app allows you to place shortcuts and widgets on the lock screen, much like you can on your home screen.  Moving apps around are equally as simple, you just long press and drag to reposition an app or shortcut.  The functionality allows you to stay interactive with certain apps, like music players and podcasts while not accidentally unlocking the phone and touching unwanted applications.

ADWLauncher EX 1.2.2 Released, Available In The Market (Video)

ADWLauncher, a well known and popular home screen replacement app, developed by AnderWeb, is getting a bit of a makeover. Actually, more of a “new version”, as the developer has now released a paid version of the app, dubbed ADWLauncher EX, or as I like to call it, ADW on crack.  The EX 1.2.2 version has been released and can be downloaded at our database here or on the Android Market.  The app competes directly with home replacement apps such as Panda Home, aHome, Open Home, LauncherPro and Sweeter Home, among several others.  What’s the difference between ADWLauncher and ADWLauncher EX?  Well, aside from the price tag of $3.14, there are tons of tweaked functionality, lots of extras and definitely some more add ons.  Hit the break for the details and to check out the pics and video.  Don’t forget to let us know what you think of the app in the comments below.

• Support for custom images for dock and hidden dockbar.
• Added a small catalog of dock pictures based on my own themes.
• Option to change app drawer icons text color.
• Menu/Lock now locks app drawer too.
• Fixed old style previews when statusbar was hidden.
• Fixed fancy backgrounds transparency issues.
• Fixes more “ForceCloses” and added stability and code improvements.

Howard Stern Switching To Android?

Howard Stern has seemed genuinely intrigued lately by his Producer and side kick Gary Dell’Abate’s new Droid 2 smartphone.  Last week he apparently asked Dell’Abate if the internet was faster on his Droid 2 than Stern’s Blackberry, for which Dell’Abate reported back that it was.
One of his listeners, who is some kind of phone tester for a living, told Stern to wait until the HTC Merge came out (which is now apparently scrapped for Verizon and moving to their sister company Alltel) so shows how much that guy knows. Hopefully Stern will move to Android and might we reccomend the HTC Thunderbolt when it comes out

HTC HD2 Can Now Run Gingerbread Via Cyanogen Mod 7 or Dual Boot WP7 And Android Via XDA

 

Putting the Nexus One aside and shelving the Nexus S as not a real developer phone, and what’s left, the mecca of developer phones the HTC HD2.  The HD2 has seen many versions of Android and of course WP6.5 and WP7 (it ships with 6.5) now if you’re the modding type you’ve got two more choices.

Cyanogen Mod 7
Although it’s not in it’s final release Cyanogen Mod 7 or CM7 for short is capable of running on the HD2 as seen by the picture above from pocketnow. Cyanogen and Team Douche build the Cyanogen Mods with a framework approach whereby developers can “plug in” the files necessary for the hardware they want to run it on giving Cyanogen Mod the widest variety of handsets to work on.

Although CM7 isn’t in it’s final release yet, it’s darn close head over here for more info

Then over at XDA the developers have been able to get the HD2 to dual boot either WP7 or Android. Because of a proprietary formatting of the SD card with Windows Phone 7 two SD cards are necessary for this dual boot so it’s kind of sort of not a true dual boot but amazing nonetheless.

Nook Color Overclocked to 1.1GHz

The Nook Color has become quite the hot item lately. Here at TalkAndroid, we make it our goal not just to help you find the device that’s right for you, but also how to get the most out of it. We follow the development community closely so we can keep up with the newest custom apps, hacks, and tweaks. In that vein, those looking to get the most out of their Nook Color might be interested to know that the CPU speed has been boosted yet again. XDA-Developers, being the kings of overclocking, have managed to boost the CPU speed of the Android-based e-reader-turned-Android-tablet to an impressive 1.1GHz. Developer dalingrin has developed his own kernel, and if you’ve rooted your device and loaded the ClockworkMod recovery tool, you can get this kernel on your own device. Simply visit the source thread, download the corresponding file, and flash through the ClockworkMod recovery. Any customization of this nature of course involves a certain amount of risk, but this process seems fairly safe. Still, proceed with caution.
If you’re feeling very confident in your abilities, this is a good time to remind you that the Nook Color, once rooted, is capable of being hacked to run the Android market. This process is substantially more risky, but if you’re wanting to get the absolute most out of your tablet, it’s worth considering.
Myself, I’m considering picking one of these up just for the simple fact that a $250 Android tablet is a steal, and the hardware in this device is quite capable. With a few tweaks, it’s a very capable tablet. Of course, one misstep, and it’s a $250 paperweight, so weigh your options carefully

Google Brings Cloud Printing to Android Devices

Google has had “cloud” printing services on the PC for Chrome users for just over a month, but now they are bringing cloud printing to your phone. That’s right, any document that you open in Google Docs or in your Gmail client on your Android phone — including .pdf and Word document attachments — will be able to be printed directly from your phone within the next few days, provided that you have set up your printer with the Google Cloud Print service.
It’ll be rolling out today and tomorrow, but at this time is available only to PC users. Those of you running Mac or Linux may see the option to configure printers for the Cloud Printing service soon, though.
