LG will launch a smartphone with glasses-free stereoscopic 3D

Stereoscopic 3D is the fad in today’s world, with several new TV models using this technology. And, the bug has spread to smartphones as well. South Korean electronics giant LG announced, it’s unveiling of  LG Optimus 3D smartphone on Feb. 14 at the Mobile World Congress event in Europe.
Hollywood is pinning its hopes on 3D as a technology that will revive interest in watching studio fare in theatres. Likewise, smartphone makers like LG see it as an additional feature that might help differentiate their brand in a highly competitive marketplace. And, consumer interest in 3D outside the cineplex is far from proven.
In a statement made by the LG officials, “full 3D experience to consumers will be available right in the palm of their hands,”
The company says it addresses the lack of 3D content with a unique experience. The phone will also have a dual-lens camera that can record 3D images as well.
The LG phone will not require users to wear clunky 3D glasses to see images in 3D. The phone will also have high-definition multimedia interface connectors so that you can display the 3D images on a bigger screen.
So far, glasses-free 3D on a TV is a bust. It just doesn’t look that good. But it’s not as hard to make good-quality 3D imagery on a small smartphone screen. The question remains whether people really want to watch 3D on a tiny screen?

Android sold more handsets in Q4 2010 than Nokia’s Symbian

For the first time in 10 years, Nokia’s symbian platform was NOT the leader in handsets sales, as Google’s Android took the top spot for Q4 of 2010! Research firm Canalys said on Monday that 32.0 million Android phones were sold, while Symbian devices sold totaled 31 million. A large amount of those sales for Android phones comes from popular models from HTC, Samsung and LG, not surprisingly either, as we saw many new models from each of those manufacturers, and will continue to see many more as they ramp up after showing off new devices for 2011 after CES.
Will Nokia be able to regain their corner of the smartphone market? That remains to be seen. They have a new CEO, Stephen Elop, who plans to announce his new direction for Nokia on Feb. 11th 2011. Android on the other hand doesn’t seem to have much to worry about as it continually climbs the popularity ladder, and will keep climbing into 2011 with Gingerbread and Honeycomb releases.

LG G-Slate makes another video appearance on youtube

Yes, the ever secretive LG G-Slate has made another sneaky appearance in a youtube video that you probably wouldn’t normally go to and watch. I’ll save you the pain of watching this video for over 4 minutes, and tell you this, skip right to 3:37 and watch until 3:47. The rest is not worth a migraine.

You’ll notice however that the LG has 2 cameras on the back though, which could mean that it shoots 3D video. Also, the nature of the youtube post the G-Slate shows up in is about 3D video editing. Just sayin.

Motorola Droid Bionic shows up on Amazon for only $149

The Motorola Droid Bionic has hit Amazon for a sweet price of $149.99 on a 2-year contract with Verizon. The Droid Bionic was one of the elite devices shown at CES, and got some great benchmarking numbers as well. The device showing up on Amazon already may mean that the device is much closer to launch than the original “end of Q2″ with Verizon as previously stated. The page seen above has however been pulled down shortly after it was up, so we’re not sure when it’s going live again.
We’ll keep you all posted! Keep your wallets ready.

LG Weather Widget from Optimus 2X Extracted, Available for Download

The weather widget in the new LG Optimus 2X is pretty slick. It has gotten a lot of attention, but sadly was tied specifically into that one phone, and LG never made it available for public consumption. However, XDA-Developers member Sony_Ericsson_X10 has found a way to pull the correct .apk file out of the Optimus 2X system dump files to make it work on any Android phone. The only caveat, as he mentions, is that default behavior is to take up the entire homescreen, so it’ll take a custom launcher like LauncherPro to resize the widget to take up only half — as seen in the picture above. If you’re looking for a new (pretty!) weather widget, head over to XDA and give it a try. Let us know your thoughts!

Multimedia Dock for the Atrix 4G May Cost only $60?

Since CES, we’ve seen a lot talk about the multimedia dock for the Atrix 4G by Motorola. For those unfamiliar, the dock will allow you to connect your phone to your TV and stream audio and video over the 4G network to your TV via your phone. It’s been widely theorized that the dock would cost somewhere in the $150 neighborhood, and frankly — that seemed believable. But as it turns out, there may be reason to suspect that it will be way more reasonable. Mobile accessory web-retailer Frommy has a page offering it for $59.95. They have none in stock at the moment, but the fact that the page is live is a promising development.
In addition to just serving as a dock for your phone, it appears to also have HDMI and USB input ports as well. This will allow you to connect your computer to the phone while it’s docked and sync your data or transfer files. All phone functions still work fully while it’s docked, and the multimedia dock will also charge your phone. It looks like a great accessory for anyone looking to pick up the Atrix, which should be out by the end of next month.

Milestone X To Hit BlueGrass Cellular Soon

We told you last week that regional carrier Bluegrass Cellular was launching the Samsung Gem. Well, they just updated their promotions website to show that the Motorola Milestone X will also be landing soon. The Milestone X is essentially the same thing as the Droid X, but un-branded from the Verizon-licensed “Droid” name. Sporting a 1GHz processor and a 4.3-inch touchscreen, the Milestone X is definitely going to be the beefiest Android phone in the Kentucky-based provider’s lineup. No word for sure on exactly when or how much, but if you’ve been waiting for a high-end Android phone to hit Bluegrass, your wait is almost over.

Froyo comes to Samsung Transform

The Samsung Transform is the latest to get Android 2.2 under it’s belt, not officially, but sort of. SDX Developers member Vampirefo has put all the instructions you need to get Froyo working on your Transform. As always, we feel the need to warn you that any tinkering with the code on your device could make it as useless as tanning bed in Africa.

If you do this to your Samsung Transform and happen to notice any issues, please go to the same forum at the source link below and comment on your findings to help the developer fix any unforeseen issues. This is still in testing, but it is more or less working, even if it doesn’t help your overall speed. Not much you can do there with a hardware bottleneck for specs.

Video of The Nook Color Running Honeycomb

As you may recall, last week on the XDA-Developers forums, user “deeper-blue” posted some photos of the Nook Color booting up with Honeycomb. Well, today, they’ve posted a video of the Nook Color not only booting Honeycomb, but running it rather well. Check it out:

This new video also features “graphics acceleration” that is “more or less working”. Sure, it’s a touch laggy, but considering all that the developer has done to get this far, it’s a pretty impressive achievement. We’ll bring you more on this as it develops.
