WiFi Only Motorola Xoom Passes Through FCC, Dubai Shows Off A Silver GSM Model

Here’s some more Motorola Xoom action for ya.  We’ve just got word that the latest and greatest to pass through the hands of the FCC is a WiFi only Motorola Xoom.  For those of you who have been pretty hesitant on dropping $800 bucks on the device, this has definitely got to have you wiping the sweat off of your brow.  No word yet on how much the device will run you, but we’ll keep digging deeper folks.  As a segway for the Xoom, we’ll also note that the guys over at Engadget got their hands on a video of a Xoom in Dubai, and get this, it’s a silver GSM model.  It’s not confirmed whether the US shores will see this device or not, but a man can hope cant he?  We’re speculating that since there are no 3G radios in the device, there should be a significant drop in that undaunted nightmare of an MSRP.  What do you think is a fair price for a WiFi only Motorola Xoom, and more importantly, would you get one?  Hit the source link to check out the video by our friends over at Engadget.

Tapjoy To Bring First Ever “Pay-Per-Action” App Distribution Service

It looks like things are getting better and better for Mr. Developer and his good friend Mrs Advertizer.  Tapjoy has recently announced that they will be offering a “mobile industry’s first” with their new Pay-Per-Action application distribution service.  The goal, obviously, is to improve the effectiveness of advertising and to benefit brand advertisers and mobile app developers.
More specifically, the new service will allow developers to reward the end user for completing a certain action within that application.  It could be completing a full tutorial, reaching a specific level on a game, or any other detailed action the developer would like.  The Pay-Per-Action model is said to deliver a higher return on investment as it tracks users’ actions, guaranteeing a high level of  value both for the developer and the user.
In addition, Tapjoy has teamed up with Apsalar, which is a mobile behavioral analytics company.  With the assistance of Apsalar’s software, advertisers or developers can better pin point and decipher conversion funnels in one or more applications.  Not a bad market to corner if you ask us.  The Pay-Per-Action SDK is bonded with Apsalar’s analytics platform.  It allows for grouping similar users together based on their patterns and user behaviors, thus making it effective for developers and advertisers to monetize on.  After all, it all comes down to the user experience right?  Well, this will be one method of improving just that.  Let us know what you think of it all in the comments below.

Android 3.0 Honeycomb Music Player Brought To You By XDA

Remember that post where we told you that we could expect Google would be bringing us some features of honeycomb to our smartphones?  Yeah, well this has nothing to do with that, sort of.  What I mean is, those features for the time being aren’t being brought to us by Google, but by none other than the folks over at XDA.  Check out this Honeycomb music player brought to you by XDA member JaJsemMatty.  At first glance, it looks a little plain Jane for me, but the functionality seems a bit promising.  It appears as though there are some options for streaming audio with a hint of a possibility of caching music for later playback.  In addition, there is a search function for any song utilizing the long press method.  Check out the full thread here for more details and to check out some awesome screen shots courtesy of our friends over at Android Community.

Nokia Considering Next OS: MeeGo, Android, or Windows 7

Nokia products world-wide hold a respectable portion of the mobile market. Their dumbphone Symbian OS still has the most users globally by most tallies, but their smartphones have had a hard time finding footing…largely because their OS was developed in-house, and they have floundered between several versions. But tomorrow is the day that it will become official: They are either going to stick with their own MeeGo (unlikely), or make the jump to either the Android or Windows Phone 7 OS for all future smartphones.
Whichever choice they make, Nokia throwing in with either Android or WP7 will greatly bolster the marketshare of the favored company, so tomorrow’s announcement will be a big one. And we’ll be sure and let you know as soon as we hear anything.

Google’s Android OS Could Bring In $1.3 Billion In Mobile Ads in 2012

Remember back in ‘08 when Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s CEO, dismissed Googl’s Android OS, stating that he believed that “building it was financially unsound for Google”?  Man, he’s gotta be biting his tongue right about now.  Well, even we have to admit, at first the business model for Android did sound a little…odd, being there was no foreseeable revenue, initially.  But then again, who are we to question the successful search giant?  However, the question does still remain, how is Google making money from Android?  Well, ad revenue, duh.  You know, those little annoying ads that pop up on your mobile device?  Yep, they are there for a reason.
In 2010, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said Google generated $850 million in mobile ads for the year in 2010 and predicts that the OS could reap $1.3 billion in mobile ads by 2012.  That’s pretty hefty if you ask us.  In an article at eWeek, Munster stated “Android accounted for $130 million of this total, good for $5.90 average revenue per user (ARPU).  For perspective, Google’s advertising totaled $25.77 ARPU, while its Web search engine accounted for $18.85 a head.”  He also went on to say “Looking forward, Google could have an average of 133 million Android users by 2012, each generating $9.85 per year on advertising, meaning Android would kick in $1.3 billion to the company’s ad revenues.”  I don’t know about Mr. Ballmer, but this certainly sounds promising for Google and future Android users.  And we know, by a statement made by Eric Schmidt, the company’s long term goal is to hit 1 billion users.  That’s not completely out of reach.  One billion users at $9.85 per user?  The results could be exponential!
In my opinion, it’s obvious Android is definitely headed in that direction.  Recently, in Q4 of 2010 Android surpassed Symbian sales by a little more than 2%.  And it’s expected that this trend will only continue.  I suppose that is great news for those of us who report on the Android operating system.  Here’s to the upcoming year in Android and to the many many breakthroughs we’ll see Android claim.  Don’t forget to let us know what your thoughts are in the comments below.

Samsung Gem Arrives on Alltel

Samsung Mobile issued a press release this morning letting us know that their Gem will be landing on Alltel Wireless. We’ve seen this phone in the headlines a bit recently, but didn’t know exactly where it would land. BlueGrass Cellular announced it recently, but other than that, a lot was up in the air. Well today, we have another official word.
As a CDMA device, I wouldn’t be too surprised to see it land on Sprint or Verizon, but no word has been given to that effect yet. If it’s going to wind up anywhere else, I expect we’ll know next week at Mobile World Congress. In the meantime, you will find the Samsung Gem available through Alltel Wireless, free after a $50 mail-in rebate. Full press release below.

HTC wildfire 2
In a video by HTC about their “Innovation” campaign, we see a phone that nobody has really seen before, which bears a strong resemblance to the HTC Wildfire. The currently “unknown” device only shows its head for a couple of seconds, but as seen above, its enough to grab a good screenshot to have a closer look at. maybe we’ll hear more about this device at MWC starting on Feb. 13th, or maybe not. If we do, it may just be the HTC Wildfire 2, maybe Wildfire HD, Wildfire Pro, who knows.
