Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 Hands-On in Germany

It appears that our Android pals in Deutschland have gotten their hands on the yet to be release Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9, one of two new tablets announced back at CTIA 2011 (we where there!) but without working units (we got to see the dummies!) We also got to see a working version of the Android 3.0 Honeycomb with TouchWiz overlay on a different test-unit tablet that same faithful day – what NewGadgetsDE has for the world now is no less than those two elements combined – and in a white-backed unit!

Have a look at the images of this ultra-sleek 9.09 x 6.21 x 0.34-inch (230.9 x 157.8 x 8.6-mm) tablet, noting that it’s hella light at 16.58 oz (470 g) and holds in its guts a dual-core 1GHz chipset and an 8.9-inch 1280 x 800 pixel display. It’s completely lovely, and even though I’ve not personally seen this fully working unit, I can tell you that the UI is tight and the physical device is utterly excellent to behold and be held. Take a look here at a video of the unit working in DE:

AT&T/Samsung “Special Annoucement” May 5

We just got an invite to the AT&T/Samsung event being held on May 5th from 4-6pm. They will be making a “special announcement”, and will be featuring product demos and executive remarks. Hmmm. Could it be the Samsung Infuse which was announced at CTIA 2011? Not sure what the news will be, but we will be reporting on it live right here.

Back when the Infuse was first announced, we didn’t know much about the Super AMOLED screen. But now that we’ve seen it on the Galaxy S II, we know how stunning it is. So seeing it on another device is pretty exciting. Keep an eye out right here on Android Community on Thursday, we’ll be reporting live with pictures and video on all the action at this event. If you have any speculation you’d like to share, please do so in the comments.

DROID3 and DROIDX2 Pop Up in Best Buy System, Model Numbers Confirmed

Best Buy cellebrite systems have updated and now include the DROID3 (XT862) and DROIDX2 (MB870), leading us to believe that we’re a matter of weeks away from a release of at least one of these phones.  The current rumor-wire has the DX2 launching some time in May, but the D3 has always been thought of as a summer release.  Maybe with the DROID Bionic now delayed until the summer, Motorola has moved up the D3 launch to fill a void?
I’m doubting that the D3 will be LTE, but the new screensize and re-styling sure has people around these parts talking.  And with that front-facing camera included, something the DROIDX2 is lacking, could this be the next big DROID until we see the new Bionic?

BlackBerry Enterprise Solution coming to Android and iOS

Research In Motion (RIM) is making a bold move in that it plans on brining the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution (BES) to Android and iOS later this year.
Pending completion of the acquisition, Ubitexx’s ubi-Suite software for device management will be integrated with the management and security controls of BlackBerry Enterprise Server and BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express. This will support Android and iOs devices and tablets. This is in response to demand from enterprise customers for multi-platform support for BES.
This cannot be a surprise to anyone. RIM has already announced that the Playbook will support Android apps. This smartphone war is now between Google and Apple and RIM needed to do something before they lose more enterprise share. You know the old saying, “If you can’t beat them, join them.” That is exactly what RIM is doing and I applaud them for doing this instead of just sitting back and watching the demise.
Full press release after the break

Press Release Source: Research In Motion On Monday May 2, 2011, 8:30 am EDT
WATERLOO, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – 05/02/11) – Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMMNews)(TSX:RIMNews) is announcing today plans for a multi-platform BlackBerry Enterprise Solution for managing and securing mobile devices for enterprises and government organizations. The solution will make available the market-leading management, security and controls of BlackBerry® Enterprise Server and BlackBerry® Enterprise Server Express for BlackBerry® devices plus, through RIM’s pending acquisition of ubitexx (creator of the ubi-Suite device management solution), the solution is expected to incorporate secure device management for Android and iOS based devices and tablets, all managed from a single web-based console.
“The multi-platform BlackBerry Enterprise Solution is designed to address a growing market and respond to requests from enterprise customers who want a secure multi-platform device management solution from a company that already delivers the gold standard for enterprise mobility,” said Peter Devenyi, Vice President, Communications Platform Group at Research In Motion. “We recognize the opportunity to continue leading in the enterprise market by providing customers with a common platform to help simplify the management of a variety of mobile devices.”
The single web-based console is being designed to provide IT administrators with a simple and efficient way to distribute software and manage policies, inventory, security and services for BlackBerry devices, as well as other mobile devices. IT administrators will be able to manage devices over-the-air, including activating devices, distributing software and applications, locking or wiping devices, enforcing and resetting device passwords, setting IT policies, and managing optional mobile applications for end users. Certain features are expected to remain exclusive to BlackBerry devices because such capabilities are built into the design of a device’s operating system. Examples include RIM’s industry-leading push technology, network and data usage efficiency, behind-the-firewall access to enterprise applications and systems, and many of the over 550 IT policies available through BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The recently-released BlackBerry® Balance™ technology (see separate press release issued today), which supports the use of a single smartphone for both work and personal purposes without compromising the security of corporate content or the privacy of personal content, will also remain exclusive to BlackBerry devices.
Overall, as is largely understood in the enterprise market today, organizations can expect a range of security, manageability and controls depending on different device platform capabilities, with some devices further limited by the design of their operating system.
The multi-platform BlackBerry Enterprise Solution will be comprised of optional architectural components based on the configuration of an organization’s mobile deployment and their operational needs. Optional components will include BlackBerry Enterprise Server and BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express for BlackBerry devices, and a separate, secure device management server for Android and iOS devices (based on the foundation of ubi-Suite from ubitexx). It will be possible to deploy multiple components in a virtualized environment on a single server.
Note: Registration for a product preview of the ubitexx solution is open today at www.ubitexx.com/preview.
The multi-platform BlackBerry Enterprise Solution is planned for general availability later this year.

Samsung Announces the Launch of their Galaxy S WiFi Media Players for Korea

Seemingly in the face of their recently started legal battle with Apple, Samsung has gone ahead and announced the launch of their two new Galaxy S media players.  Named 4.0 and 5.0 respectively, the naming simply reflects the sizing of their screens.
A quote from the facebook page where Samsung put an announcement up:

We’re pleased to announce the launch of the GALAXY S WiFi 4.0 and 5.0.
Complete with Android 2.2 “Froyo” for access to thousands of Android apps & 4’’ and 5’’ large, high quality screens, these handsets will provide the ultimate smartphone-like experience.
It is interesting to see their wording here, but make no mistake, this is a marketing move much like Apple has done with their iPhone/iPod Touch devices. The Galaxy S media players are everything the Galaxy S phones are, but without, well, the phones. Let us know what you think in the comments.
