Huawei Honor Leaks, Actually Looks Good

In Huawei’s efforts to help turn the public eye about their products (they’re known as the “cheap” OEM that everyone steers clear of for Samsung, HTC etc.) they look to be bringing another decent Android phone to Asia and possibly Europe. It’s called the Huawei Honor and at first glance could be mistaken for a Samsung Galaxy S
It’s true they’ve made their design similar to Samsung’s flagship phone (who was once accused of making theirs similar to Apple’s iPhone), but it’s a design that works and most people like it. What matters is what’s underneath, though – it’ll apparently be shipping with a 1.4GHz processor (no word on if this single core or dual-core), a 5 megapixel camera with HD video recording, Android 2.3, a 4 inch display, a 1930mAh battery and more.
No video yet, but if Huawei’s other 1GHz+ phones are anything to go on then this should handle Android as smoothly as the best of them. It’s possible Huawei will be on-hand at IFA with this model so we hope more information will come from the event. In the meantime, all we get is a fingerprint-clad photo of the phone that you see above. [LoD]

Google Finally Releasing Fix for Nexus S Voice Search Bug

Just over two weeks ago, we reported on a long-withstanding bug affecting many Nexus S owners after being asked to shed some light on the matter due to Google’s lack of communication to owners regarding the problem. The bug was discovered as early as April 2011 and has since gone unsolved. Thankfully, it seems our little spotlight worked (we like to think so, anyway) as a Google employee confirmed that an OTA update that addresses this issue will be rolling out soon.
The bug related to Voice Search. The application would continually pop-up and disappear, sometimes so fast that the user can’t press the “cancel” button on the pop-up in time. It happens often for some and only intermittently for others, but either way we’re sure we’d get annoyed if it kept popping up when we were trying to use a different application. No timeframe still, but at least they’re close to a rollout and we know things are being worked on. [Google]

Motorola DEFY+ Landing in the UK Next Month

Looking for a decent upgrade to the original Motorola Defy? Well, the Motorola Defy+ is already on your radar. But if you’re in the UK and were wondering when you’d be able to go out and snap one up, Motorola has today confirmed that the device will be available at select UK carriers and retailers starting sometime next month.
You’re getting a 1GHz processor, 2GB of internal storage, a 2GB microSD card (with up to 32GB cards supported) and a 5 megapixel camera beneath the armor that shields it – this thing is dust and water resistant (the original could be submerged in water and would still function as normal). Android 2.3 will be preinstalled with Motorola’s custom UI on top.
You’re also getting a 3.7 inch display with Corning Gorilla Glass protecting it, meaning it’ll be scratch resistant and should be more (but not completely) resistant to glass shattering due to deep falls.
This one should be reasonably priced for the punch it provides.

HP may resurrect TouchPad, head of PC business says

A spinoff of the Personal Systems Group (PSG) will bring the "best value" to HP shareholders for taxation and other reasons, PSG head Todd Bradley told Reuters in an interview.
"A standalone company could and will do what's most required to drive value for shareholders and partners," Bradley said.
HP stunned markets when it announced two weeks ago that it is considering shedding its PC business, part of a wrenching series of moves away from the consumer market that included killing its new tablet.
Selling the PC division to a rival such as Taiwan's Acer Inc, which acquired computer maker Gateway in 2007 or to China's Lenovo Group Ltd, which purchased IBM's PC division in 2004, is not a desirable alternative, Bradley said.
"I would just say that the numbers don't support that that strategy works," said Bradley, citing Acer reporting its first-ever quarterly loss last week.
HP has been struggling in the PC market -- a high-revenue but low-margin business -- as popular devices such as Apple Inc's iPad have lured consumers away.
Bradley is on a trip to China, Taiwan and South Korea to meet with employees, suppliers, government officials and media to convince them that HP's PC business will remain robust and committed to Asian markets.
"China's obviously a critically important market for HP as well as PSG," Bradley said.
Bradley said HP will increase investments in Shanghai, and over the next three years expand its Shanghai manufacturing base, consolidate six employee sites into one campus, and make Shanghai a regional headquarters in China for the PSG.
Bradley said the company could resurrect HP's short-lived TouchPad tablet computer, which was introduced on July 1 before being terminated only about six weeks later.
"Tablet computing is a segment of the market that's relevant, absolutely," Bradley said.
A standalone incarnation of HP's PC business would be a full-line computer maker including ultrathin and all-in-one PCs.
He said he is stressing that "regardless of what happens, we're the largest PC company in the world. We need everybody energized, and while this isn't business as usual, we need people to go out and sell products every day."
Suppliers to HP PCs will remain largely intact, although the company may renegotiate and redefine the relationships.
"Unwinding the integration that's taken place within HP will be enormous amounts of work and effort, justified by the return we think we'll be able to provide to our shareholders."
Nevertheless, he said, "we will be one of, if not the largest customers of all of our major suppliers, be it Samsung to LG to Microsoft to Intel."
The Palo Alto, California-based company is now exploring options for its WebOS software, which it acquired through the acquisition of Palm, of which Bradley is a former chief executive.
Bradley has said in the past that a number of companies had expressed interest in possibly using WebOS as an operating system, but he gave no further details on Tuesday, saying that he is not in China to announce or even negotiate anything regarding WebOS.
HP's board will meet in December to decide on the course to take with the PC business, although insiders assume the decision will be a spinoff.
Bradley said he expects to be chief executive of any such new company.
"My intention would be to lead it through this transaction...and if it's a standalone public company, to lead that," he said.

Sprint to hold ‘Strategy Update’ media event on October 7th

Sprint will hold a media event on October 7th to discuss the company’s strategy moving forward. While the specific topics to be covered by Sprint’s senior management are unknown, there are certainly a few areas that are likely candidates. First and foremost, Sprint’s plans with 4G moving forward are a bit up in the air right now. The carrier announced a deal with LightSquared that could bring 4G LTE service to Sprint subscribers in the near future, but LightSquared is having issues with its spectrum that need to be ironed out. Clearwire’s future is anything but certain as well. Sprint CEO Dan Hesse did tell BGR that Sprint has 4G-related announcements in store for the fall, so the LightSquared deal was likely just the tip of the iceberg. Sprint is also set to launch Apple’s next-generation iPhone 5 handset this fall, and while we couldn’t get a peep out of the carrier while we were visiting its corporate headquarters back in July, we wouldn’t be surprised if Sprint is a bit more talkative in October when it comes to Apple smartphones.

Asus to launch 5-6 Intel-powered Ultrabooks in October

Asustek Computer is set to host a product launch conference for Ultrabooks in New York in October with prices to range from US$899-US$1,999, according to company chairman Jonney Shih.
Asustek will release 5-6 Ultrabook models in October with screen sizes of 11.6- or 13.3-inch.
Shih also noted that the recent price drop of several key components such as panels and DRAM has enabled the company to lower the overall cost of Ultrabooks, and with HP having abandoned its PC business, while Dell and Toshiba are expected to turn cautious about Ultrabooks, the new market is likely to be mainly propped up by Acer and Asustek.
Although Intel still has not accept downstream partners' requests to cut Ultrabook CPU prices, the company has offered to provide extra assistance to allow its partners to launch sub-US$1,000 models, according to sources from upstream component players.

OnStar Remote Link app shoots navigation directions to car from Android smartphone

We have talked about the app that OnStar offers for Android smartphones before. The app called RemoteLink has been updated to support a new navigation feature that some drivers will find very appealing. The app allows the user to search for a destination on the smartphone and then send it directly to the vehicle.

Once the destination is sent to the vehicle it can be access audibly from the OnStar Turn-by-Turn system or via the in-dash navigation system inside the car. The app supports all current OnStar RemoteLink-enabled vehicles. The app also allows the user to route themselves to any address in their contacts list or speak a destination using voice search.
The app will also store the last five destinations that the user searched for on the phone. The updated app is set to be available on the Android Market as of today. The new feature will also be added to the iOS app as well (pictured). I can see this being very useful, I often get my navigation device ready the night before a trip and this update would make that easier.

Samsung GT-I9220 Super AMOLED smartphone actually exists

Back on the 24th of August, a picture was floating around that was at first thought to be the Samsung GT-I9220 smartphone packing its giant Super AMOLED screen. That photo later was proven to be the 5-inch Galaxy S media player. If you thought that meant the rumors of the GT-I9220 smartphone were all false, they were not.

The smartphone is real and the certification sheet for the smartphone has been found on the Wi-Fi Certified website. As you can see on the photo above the device is clearly listed as the Samsung GT-I9220. The smartphone will pack a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED HD screen. The screen has 326ppi and the resolution is 1280 x 720.
The smartphone is also expected to have Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread onboard, a dual core 1.4GHz CPU, and an 8MP camera. This sounds like an impressive device indeed. We are hoping that the phone will break cover officially at IFA 2011 kicking off next week.

Epson expands iPrint app to cover Android smartphones and tablets

Epson has been in the printer market for a very long time. Over the last few years, the company has been rolling out print services to allow the smartphone user to get documents off their mobile phones and onto the printer rather than having things stuck on the phone. To start with, Epson offered print services for iOS devices leaving Android out in the cold.

Epson has now announced that it has expanded its iPrint services to cover Android smartphones with a new app that is on the Android Market. The app allows printing from the Android device to any Epson wireless enabled printer. Support for online services like Box.net, Dropbox, and Evernote is also integrated. The app also supports printing from Android tablets and allows document printing and photo printing.
The app also offers the ability to check printer status and ink levels along with the ability to print a webpage. Advanced features allow the user to choose and print multiple photos, print photos with or without borders, and to choose color or B&W prints. The scanning resolution for images can be chosen and the app allows the print quality to be optimized. The app needs a device using Android 2.1 or higher.
