With the launch of the much awaited Android 4.0 Ice cream sandwich operating environment for smartphones, the top mobile companies are cashing in on its hype by releasing their phones in the beaming market.
Ever wonder what to do when your HTC device breaks? I mean, you bought it off of eBay, what now? No sweat, some moderators over at XDA have you covered. XDA members madnish30 and orb3000 have taken the time out of their busy lives to compile a list of certified repair and service centers for HTC devices in a country near you. According to XDA, the list is pretty extensive and growing, with new locations being added all of the time. This could prove to be a faithful resource in time, especially if you’re extremely attached to that rare overseas powerhorse of a device you love. So, if you’re in dire need of a service center, then head on over to the thread and check it out. Let us know what you think in the comments below. And if you know of any other service locations, feel free to add them to the list.
Here we ( me and orb3000 ) want to make a compilation of the service centers/repair centers of the various manufacturers ( of which the devices are listed on XDA). So please contribute and we will add it to the first post.

Huawei has a couple more devices to show us that should be making their official appearances during the MWC conference next week on the 13th. The first is the Huawei IDEOS X3 smartphone. Looks to have a front and rear camera, back, search and menu buttons, and 4 different colors to choose from (red, black, silver and blue). This looks to be more of a mid-range Android device, when compared to the X5 we saw here. Below we also have the IDEOS S7, which will also a slim tablet device with similar hardware options with buttons, front and rear cameras, and a 7inch screen, unfortunately, we don’t know much more than that. We’ll have to wait for the official MWC.
Myriad, a member of the Open Handset Alliance, has just announced ‘Alien Dalvik’. Alien Dalvik makes it possible for “the majority” of unmodified Android apps to run on non-Android platforms. Myriad is also saying that the performance will not be compromised, as Alien Dalvik is built from the powerful Dalvik Turbo virtual machine. Myriad will be talking more about this exciting project at Mobile World Congress starting next week with plans to officially release it later this year on MeeGo. If you are itching for more details on the upcoming LG G-Slate on T-Mobile, there’s a short video out there showing off the externals of the Android tablet, as well as its 3D capabilities. While we are impressed with the specs, and snazzy external styling (love that kickstand!), we aren’t sure the 3D video recording capability will be the must have feature of this device. It’s a bit gimmicky at best, but at least you can still disable it and shoot regular pictures and video. Check out the video after the break and tell us what you think.
If Android ever wanted to brag about multitasking, all of their phones should have come with two screens. Sprint’s new Kyocera Echo brags just that. Even as I write this article, I can’t help but look at my own phone in disgust. Just sitting there, shamefully, with its one screen. Its embarrassing. Now, a phone exists that actually meets the definition of a multitasker. You can compose an email on one screen while browsing the web on another. Or have your text on one screen while the other screen is fully devoted to a huge touchscreen keyboard. There is however one limitation that I’m aware of. Currently the phone doesn’t run the apps on the seperate screens simultaneously. Rather, it quickly alternates between the two apps. I’m not sure how, or even if that takes a toll on performance. I’m sure the guys at Kyocera have that all ironed out though. The Echo sports a 1Ghz snapdragon processor and Android 2.2 . Perhaps with all that screen real estate, the Echo would do well with a port from Android’s tablet OS honeycomb 3.0.
You know it’s a monumental shift when something that has only been around a few years takes over something that’s been around for a couple decades. An article at ReadWriteWeb posted results of smartphone sales versus PC sales in Q4 of 2010. Smartphones sold 100.9 million OEM units in that quarter, while PCs sold 92.1 million OEM units. That marks the first time that smartphones beat out PCs. What’s even more puzzling about the chart above is that Nokia shipped over 100 million units in 2010, while Research in Motion shipped 48.8. Don’t worry though, those numbers are sure to shift in 2011 after manufacturers like HTC and Samsung put the heat on for Android this year. Craziness.
Teleca is a company who works in the background developing services for mobile technology, car manufacturers, etc. Word is that they may be getting involved with SiriusXM in bringing more Sirius to Android devices as well. Whether that’s through some new hardware running Android, or apps for all Android devices is unknown at the moment. With that said, it would make sense that they build apps for all to hit the masses, since Pandora, and other streaming music apps have found success. We may hear more about this at MWC next week as well.

Wide availability helps Google OS grow by over 800 per cent in 12 months
Android's market share grew by a colossal 888 per cent over the past 12 months, placing it hot on the heels of the Symbian platform, which saw its lead cut by half, according to new figures from Gartner. Symbian devices were outsold by Android handsets during the fourth quarter of 2010, but the use of the Nokia-owned operating system in Fujitsu, Sharp and legacy products from Sony Ericsson and Samsung allowed the platform to retain its lead, explained Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner.
"Android sales in the fourth quarter of 2010 continued to be driven by the broad availability of many high-end products from HTC (Desire range, Incredible and EVO), Samsung (Galaxy S) and Motorola (Droid X, Droid 2)," she said. Meanwhile, RIM's BlackBerry operating system saw its market share decrease by four per cent, giving it just 0.3 per cent more share than Apple's iOS. Microsoft also continued to struggle in the mobile market, despite launching Windows Phone 7 at the back end of 2010. The platform was used in just 4.2 per cent of devices at the end of 2010, but is predicted to be the fastest growing platform this year. Smartphone sales were up by over 70 per cent last year, and accounted for a fifth of the 1.6 billion mobile phones sold, showing that they have penetrated the mainstream market.
Smartphone sales remain concentrated in markets where buyers have more disposable income, and where networks are fast enough to support the full features. Western Europe and North America accounted for 52.3 per cent of global smartphone sales in the fourth quarter, Gartner noted.
Despite Nokia's global mobile phone market share tumbling by 7.5 per cent, the Finnish manufacturer still managed to sell over 180 million more devices than closest rival Samsung, which saw its share drop by 1.9 per cent. However, Gartner noted that Nokia has reached a critical point, and that the company's future rests on the strategy to be unveiled on 11 February and its ability to execute on any new partnerships.
Apple, RIM, ZTE and Huawei were the only manufacturers in the top 10 to increase their market share year on year. Apple sold 46.6 million handsets last year, representing 87.2 per cent growth year on year. The increase in iPhone sales was put down to expansion into new countries and the ending of exclusive deals. This second factor in particular made Apple devices more affordable by encouraging competitive tariffs and data plans. RIM, meanwhile, sold 47.5 million units and saw its market share rise by just 0.2 per cent. Fourth quarter sales in Indonesia, the UK and the Netherlands were highlighted as particularly strong. The increased BlackBerry sales were down to aggressively priced prepaid offerings, and the steady uptake of the BlackBerry Messenger service, according to Gartner.
The analyst firm expects a number of smartphones and tablets to be announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona later this month, but warned that shortages of components, including camera modules, touch-screen controllers and Amoled screens, could be a problem for manufacturers over the coming year. "This situation will not ease until at least the second half of 2011. Shortages will be a long-term consideration for mobile device vendors, because other fast-growing categories of connected consumer devices, such as media tablets, are competing for the same components," said Milanesi.
