Acer Iconia A100 7″ Honeycomb Tab on sale today, we already have Benchmarks

Today is the launch date for the Acer Iconia A100 tablet. For those unfamiliar this is the first Android 3.2 Honeycomb tablet to the market in the 7″ form factor. Want to see benchmarks? We told you originally it was coming in August and it has finally arrived. It was officially announced this morning and you can get all the details here. Lucky for you we already have one and decided to run a few performance benchmarks to help our readers make up their minds.

A quick summary this is a NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core Android 3.2 Honeycomb Tablet with a 7″ 1024×600 resolution, rocking 1GB of Ram and comes in a 8GB or 16GB flavor. It is small, lightweight, and portable and after running a few benchmarks we can clearly see it performs pretty nice too.
I’m going to say the good benchmarks are from not only running the latest and greatest Android 3.2 Honeycomb that has been optimized plenty by Google, especially for a 7″ device but it also has a slightly lower resolution. First off here is the quadrant benchmark photo shown above and while it didn’t score amazingly high it was decent at almost 2100. For a comparison a similar spec tablet like the Xoom and Galaxy Tab with the same Tegra 2 score around 2500.

Next up we ran the increasingly popular Vellamo Web Browser Performance test. For full details on the new Vellamo Test read here. It tests overall performance from scrolling, web page rendering, network performance, V8, JavaScript and more. It is very thorough and it appears to love the Acer A100 — yup that is the little guy at the very top of the chart scoring well over 1000. Only my Xoom got that high once I overclocked it to like 1.4 Ghz.

Vellamo is supposed to be a pretty accurate test that rates overall device performance instead of particular areas. So far I’ve tested tons of dual-core devices like the Sensation 4G to the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and even the Xoom but nothing has scored as high as the Acer A100 when stock. Maybe its the lower resolution but that should take much effect as you see lower res phones like the myTouch 4G score plenty high. I’m going to go ahead and say Android 3.2 Honeycomb is highly optimized and performs quite great. The A100 beat the Tab by a pretty large margin.

For fun we also ran the slowly becoming less popular Linpack test for good measure but the score was pretty lack-luster at just 14 MFLOPS so we will move on quickly.

While some may just want to see the device others really love benchmarks so I’ll keep posting a few more and you can expect to see some hands-on pictures and video shortly. I’ve also ran a quick Sunspider but Vellamo actually includes that in testing but I’ll throw that picture up for good measure. It scored around 2300 in sunspider which is about even with recent devices.

From initial testing I’m seeing pretty great overall performance from this sleek 7″ Android 3.2 Honeycomb tablet. It is smooth, fast, and appears to be running extremely stable. I’ve only used Android 3.2 briefly but so far it feels much more stable than 3.0 and the optimizations can be felt during regular usage. Everything is really fluid and nice.
Again this was just a few pictures to get those interested in the Acr A100 7″ tablet excited as well as show some performance numbers. We’ll be sure to post some device hands-on and pictures very shortly. For now check out all the photos below in full size via the gallery.

Priced from $329.99 when it hits US shelves today – it’ll arrive on Canadian shelves next month – the A100 will come in 8GB and 16GB versions each with NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 processor, a 1024 x 600 touchscreen, 5-megapixel main camera supporting 720p HD 30fps video recording, and 5hrs battery life.

There’s also a gyroscope and digital compass, 3.5mm headphone socket and a docking station connector. Up front Acer has slotted in a 2-megapixel camera for video calls.
Three versions of the A100 will be on offer, with one a Walmart exclusive. The A100-07u16u has 16GB of internal storage and will retail for $349.99 in the US, while the A100-07u08u has 8GB of storage and will retail for $329.99; the A100-07u08w is Walmart’s special version, functionally identical to the 8GB regular model. All three have microSD card slots for extending storage.

Acer Iconia Tab A500 Receiving Android 3.2 OTA Update August 25th

Acer announced on their Malaysian Facebook page that they will be releasing the 3.2 OTA update for their Iconia Tab A500 on August 25ht. Apparently, there was a minor setback due to a few policy changes from Google and that’s the reason for the delay.
Dear Fans, due to some policy changes from Google where Acer has to comply, the A500 Honeycomb 3.2 OTA update will be postponed to 25th August, we apologize for the dissapointments and upsets but we will be bringing the final and stable update to all of our A500 fans asap! Please be patient guys :)
First time I’ve heard of Google crackin’ the whip. Hopefully this isn’t just limited for Asian markets and this OTA will be pushed out stateside as well. Either way, it doesn’t look like all you Iconia Tab users will have to wait much longer to get your taste of Android 3.2 Honeycomb.
Thanks, Andrzej!

Acer Iconia Smart 4.8″ Phone Hybrid Coming This September

We first got wind of the Acer Iconia Smart 4.8″ phone/tablet hybrid back in February at MWC2011. New details have just leaked slating this device to hit the streets coming in September, I’m just hoping its lost some weight and is a little thinner these days.

It was first said to be hitting shelves in April but was delayed due to earthquakes from what we heard. I know that is a long time to wait for those that loved the idea and look of this device with that large 4.8″ display. Don’t worry the time may finally be coming for the Iconia Smart and it should feature the same specs we first saw back at MWC2011.

Those specs include that 4.8″ display with a 1024×480 resolution, a 1 Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, rear and front facing cameras as well as Android 2.3 Gingerbread. I will say that I first heard it would come in around $700 dollars or so, no way people are going to pay that when you can get a tablet for much much less so hopefully they’ve rethought the pricing a bit. I like the idea and size of the Acer Iconia Smart but I’m not sure if others do. It may be a little big for a pocket but then users put there Galaxy Tab 7′s in pockets right? What do you guys think?

Acer Iconia Tab A500 deal at Best Buy

Best Buy is featuring the Acer Iconia Tab A500 in their weekly sales circular and at a pretty good price, too. The Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet is on sale for just under $450, cheaper than Motorola’s XOOM, which is selling for around $600, WiFi only. It’s also available now at that price, while the slightly cheaper EeePad Transformer (at $400) won’t be out for another few weeks. And with our earlier report that users can root the Iconia (with a step by step guide included), the time is ripe to ask the question … why wait?

Specs on the Iconia A500 include a 10.1 inch screen with 1280×800 resolution. It’s powered by a dual core 1Ghz processor running Android 3.0 Honeycomb. Storage wise, the A500 sports 1 GB of RAM and 16GB of external storage via the microSD slot. And the A500 has dual cameras – a front facing 2MP model for video chat, as well as a rear facing 5MP. And of course, it has all the usual WiFi and Bluetooth capability.
Now of course, it doesn’t have the nifty the keyboard dock with extra battery like the Transformer. But you can’t have everything. The Iconia, however, is shipping now, and Best Buy looks to move them at that price. And you know the old saying … he who hesitates is lost.

Target getting the Acer Iconia Tab?

The folks over at androidcentral have stumbled upon some interesting news. A non retail, working display model of the tablet has been sent to Target. The picture shows that the supposed release date might be May 15. Knowing you can get them for $450 at Best Buy, does anyone else think a pricing war could be in the near future? A lot of vendors are already doing this with phones,  perhaps tablet will be next? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Acer Iconia Tab A500 Rooted

Looking to root that Android 3.0 from Acer called the Iconia Tab A500? The folks at XDA were working to bring this to you ASAP – as they always seem to do – and have publicized the root method used to achieve deeper access to Android. In time, custom ROMs and other hacks and mods are expected to surface just as they did for the Motorola XOOM. Make your way to XDA if you need to get your root up and running.

Acer Iconia Smart Passes FCC And Headed For AT&T?

Acer’s unique, 4.8 inch smartphone/tablet, the Iconia Smart. Acer promised we would see the phone hit stateside April, 2011 but the month is nearly over and some are left wondering exactly what happened? Well, it looks like the Iconia Smart has just passed FCC and while I don’t think we will be seeing an April launch, I do think we can expect the phone very, very soon. In case you needed a little reminder, the phone comes equipped with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 512MB or ROM/RAM, 2MP front facing camera, 8MP rear facing camera and all the usual fixin’s. Oh, and who could forget the oddly long 4.8 inch, 1024×480 resolution display. It also appears the U.S. version of the Iconia Smart might be heading to AT&T seeing how its the only carrier who’s 3G bands support the phone’s 850, 1900 and 2100MHz frequencies.
Anyone interested in what Acer’s cooking or do you think the’ve had a little too much of what Kyocera might have been smoking?

Acer Iconia Tab A500 now on sale, $450 for aluminum-clad WiFi-only model

Yearning for some diversity in your hunt for a Honeycomb tablet? Acer's new Iconia Tab A500 doesn't really stray from the Tegra 2 norm when it comes to internal specs, but it does have that brushed aluminum back, a full-sized USB 2.0 port, and a sane $450 price point going for it. You'll get 16GB of storage and 802.11b/g/n WiFi connectivity for your money, though ASUS' similarly outfitted Eee Pad Transformer should also be prominent on your radar as it'll ask for an even humbler $399 when it makes its slightly delayed US launch tomorrow. Let's hope the arrival of these Taiwanese cousins nudges other Android tablets makers into engaging in a bit of price competition, eh?
