HTC Thunderbolt gets a new Gingerbread build leaked

HTC’s Thunderbolt was cutting edge when it launched as the first phone to use Verizon’s blazing 4G LTE network. Unfortunately it also launched a version behind with Froyo, and still hasn’t received an official update from Verizon. Luckily, as is tradition, test builds have been leaked and the vert latest RUU (HTC’s flashable ROM format) is available at XDA..

A couple weeks ago, we heard talked about the Thunderbolt’s Gingerbread update being delayed from its originally scheduled (and already passed) time frame of Q2. Whatever the delay has been, Verizon’s still at work and their latest build is available for those of you who like beta.
The Thunderbolt is one of Verizon’s 4G devices, able to speed through data on their LTE network. We were really impressed with HTC’s build quality and the shear speed of LTE. With the Droid Bionic bringing the imminent union of super fast internet and dual-core speed, the Thunderbolt’s shine could be fading.
Hopefully the update, when its ready, will help Thunderbolt owners stave off jealousy. The update is being worked on by devs as I type, to root and package the ROM for download. When it is available, remember we can’t speak for the stability of the build, and as always make sure you backup your current ROM and be fully aware of the risks and what you’re doing before flashing.

HTC Sensation 4G 2.3.4 Gingerbread Update Rolling Out Now

The HTC Sensation 4G on T-Mobile is all set to start receiving an OTA update today. It starts today and should hit most handsets within the next week. As always you can do and manually check for updates if you don’t want to wait. The update brings the Sensation to Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread. The EVO 3D was updated today and shortly after the update started rolling out it also appeared over at HTCDev as available for unlocking of the bootloader. Most likely the T-Mobile Sensation will get the same treatment in the next few days.

The Android 2.3.4 update for the Sensation should bring a wide variety of updates and improvements as well as what was needed for the HTC bootloader unlock process at the same time so users shouldn’t be waiting long for that to be activated. Some of the updates from T-Mobile and HTC include:
New Features
-Software stability
-Improved battery life
Improvements
-Improvements to Trace dictionary
-Improvements to screen responsiveness
-Improvements to video playback
-Improvements regarding device reboot / power off
-Improvements to icon pixilation
-Improvements to Wi-Fi connection
-Improvements to screen/photo resolution
As always the update will hit your phone over the next few days or you can activate it manually by going to Menu > Settings > System Updates > HTC Software Update > Check Now > and hitting OK when it appears. The update is most likely pretty large and Wi-fi is recommended to speed up the entire process. While the update isn’t a special one the Sensation doesn’t have many issues that need fixing anyways so this is mostly maintenance as well as preparation for the unlock process. Again feel free to watch HTCDev.com/bootloader once you’ve accepted the update as it should appear on the site soon.

HTC Droid Incredible Gingerbread 2.3.4 Update Officially Halted

On Monday, some lucky Droid Incredible users started getting their Gingerbread update pushed to their phones. Today Verizon has confirmed that the update has been halted and delayed. With Gingerbread over half a year old, its been available in custom ROMs for months now. Apparently something in the Sense laden version isn’t working out quite right though as the build has been sent back to testing.

HTC’s Droid Incredible came out early last year, with the first batch of 1 GHz smartphones. Being over a year old though, with a successor already on the market, the Incredible is not at the top of Verizon’s priority list. That being said, a late update is better than no update I suppose.
Manufacturers’ skinning the updates, and then loading carriers’ bloatware and testing the functionality of it all adds a good delay to these updates. Apparently not enough of this testing was done in Verizon’s opinion as something caused them to halt the update and go back to testing. Of course if you REALLY want Gingerbread, then CyanogenMod is waiting

Official Gingerbread Update for the HTC Thunderbolt Leaked

If you’ve been an HTC Thunderbolt user patiently waiting for your turn to go at it with Gingerbread well, tonight might be your night. Or not, depending how you look it. Build number 2.07.605.0 was recently leaked for the Tbolt and although this will not be the final Verizon build, it is an official build from HTC (unlike all those test builds leaked in the past). While we can’t guarantee that updating to this version will allow you to update the final Verizon, if you feel like you’ve had enough of Froyo the instructions on updating are easy peasy.
For download links hit up the source below. Remember, Phandroid will not be held responsible for you bricking your device if something goes wrong. Even if you decide to pass on this update, it’s nice to know that we’re a least a few builds closer to that official OTA update from Verizon, isn’t it?
Thanks, Jeffery!

HTC Droid Incredible Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread Update Rolling Out?

There has been a little confusion regarding the Droid Incredible and if it would actually get updated to Android 2.3 Gingerbread over the past few days. An email from a rep originally said the Incredible was currently not on the list of devices getting upgraded and that caused many to question what was going on. An Email was quickly sent out stating that the Incredible was in fact going to get Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread to clear up any confusion. It appears they might have already had it ready to rock because we are seeing it hit devices already.

When we first heard the Droid Incredible wouldn’t receive Gingerbread as it would not give the device an “overall improved user experience” we were shocked and not sure what to think. No need to worry because the update is rolling out now, or has at least started a “soak test” and should be coming sometime shortly. Just like most Verizon updates, the carrier has listed a support document going over all the details on their site over at the Incredible Support Page.

While the update wont change much users will get boosted to the latest Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread and receive a slew of bug fixes specific to the device such as MMS improvements and more. Users will be able to take photos without an SD card now as well with the internal storage. Nothing too special here but it should be plenty fast and stable when it finally gets those ginger flavors. Still no news on the Thunderbolt update sadly, so you guys will have to keep waiting.

Original DROID Incredible’s Gingerbread Update Sure is Coming, According to this .PDF

AndroidForums.com have uncovered the .PDF file on Verizon’s servers detailing the update. When we see this, that usually means the update is right around the corner. Anything can happen, of course, but I’d venture to guess we won’t go too far into the week without hearing official word of rollout plans from Verizon. [Androidforums.com]

HTC EVO 4G Gingerbread gets Rooted along with many other new HTC phones

If you were one of the many people that accepted the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for your HTC EVO 4G and have been waiting for a easy way to root your phone then I have good news. Thanks to AlpharevX and @Unrevoked you can now easily and quickly root your EVO 4G, EVO 3D, Sensation, the new myTouch 4G Slide, and a slew of other HTC devices thanks to their new tool Revolutionary.

These are the developers behind the S-OFF and root tool used on the HTC Sensation 4G and EVO 3D for those that didn’t want to wait for HTC to allow us the same privilege. Today they just released the latest version of the tool they call “Revolutionary” that we all can use to easily root our favorite phones.
While they are still calling Revolutionary a “developer preview” it is highly functional and I was able to root the deeply locked down HTC Sensation 4G is like 3 minutes using their awesome system and it really couldn’t be easier. As always this will void your warranty and if you are unsure of what you are about to do, you should probably ask a few questions on Twitter or over at XDA just to be safe.
Here is a list of compatible devices and the list just keeps getting longer so don’t worry if your device isn’t supported yet. The Latest version of Revolution is called 0.4pre3 and you’ll be glad to know you can root your EVO 4G that has the latest 2.3 Gingerbread OTA and more. Head over to the official page via the source link below for all the details and instructions you need.

AT&T: Samsung Infuse 4G to get Gingerbread 2.3 this month

According to AT&T via their official Twitter account, the Samsung Infuse 4G will be receiving the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update at some point this month.
AT&T announced in July that all of its phones that were released in 2011 will be receiving an update to 2.3.x. The Samsung Infuse 4G will join the HTC Inspire 4G, LG Phoenix, Motorola ATRIX, Pantech Crossover and the Samsung Captivate as the AT&T models that have already received, or will soon be receiving, the Android OS update.

HTC DROID Incredible 2.3 (Gingerbread) Update: To be or Not to be?

Hardware manufacturers and cell phone companies try to avoid fragmentation of the many different versions of Android OS, but some phones are bound to be left behind. Of these, the HTC DROID Incredible was thought to not receive the upgrade to 2.3 (Gingerbread). An owner of the device questioned a Canadian HTC customer support rep to when he should expect his update. They promptly replied that “the Droid Incredible is not on that list” for future updates.

Yet recently, another E-Mail has surfaced stating that “The Droid Incredible is still slated for a Gingerbread 2.3 update”. The US HTC representative expressed that their is no estimated date for release, and that the update was definitely not cancelled. This is great news, yet hearing it from an official Verizon representative is what we are all waiting for.
Personally, there should be no reason for HTC or Verizon to cancel this update. It has sufficient hardware for running Gingerbread, and other devices with nearly identical specs (EVO 4G, myTouch4G) have already been updated successfully. Unofficial updates to Gingerbread for practically ancient phones (HTC Hero, HTC G1) have been available for months now, so it shouldn’t prove to be a problem.
If the phone wasn’t on HTC’s list, then maybe the update is far from ready; nevertheless, we should expect it eventually.

HTC Sensation OTA Update for 2.3.4 Gingerbread Hitting Europe

New reports this morning are suggesting the update to the late Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread is currently underway for the European model. The update hit a few unbranded Germany roaming HTC Sensation phones but should be rolling out to other carriers throughout the next week or so. As far as I know there hasn’t been any word regarding an update for the Sensation but this could be a good time to include some fixes and update to the latest OS version.

Folks that have received the update are saying it was around 41mb and was a fairly fast and easy process, as well as bringing the phone software version up to 1.45.401.2. We are still waiting more details but it appears to bring GTalk video chat to the device as a standard option instead of using things like Qik or other options.
As always with OTA updates you’ll find a few software tweaks, bug fixes and some performance enhancements so hopefully this update will start hitting other carriers soon. We haven’t heard from HTC regarding the update but most likely it should start rolling out to other carriers and possible other regions too. The T-Mobile Sensation 4G here in the states is still on 2.3.3 and I know I’ve had a few readers ask when it will receive 2.3.4 so hopefully this clears up things a little bit as its already started.

Google Videos App Now Works on Gingerbread and Froyo Devices

Google’s Videos app was announced and released for the Motorola XOOM back at Google I/O in May, letting you rent and watch movies on the tablet, as well as on your computer. Watching it on your phone was promised, but the app wasn’t available. Until today that is. Videos has been updated in the Market and is now available for many Froyo and Gingerbread devices.

Google’s Videos app, released today for phones, lets you watch rented videos from the Android Market, as well as the videos you have on your phone. As you can see above the app is pretty sparse. There are two different screens, one displaying your rented movies and another showing the videos on your phone, with a link to the Movies section of the Android Market in the corner of both.
Renting works much the same as with tablets, and while we haven’t been able to confirm it, presumably downloading the movies will be prohibited on rooted phones as it was on rooted tablets. The work around for this has already been available on phones, which is to watch the movie on Youtube.
Watching, and sorting through your own videos in the app is a bit nicer than digging through the gallery where there are no labels though. Unfortunately, since I’m running the pre-beta version of CyanogenMod 7 for the Atrix, my videos aren’t playing with picture, but other than that the UI was a welcome improvement from the Gallery’s picture oriented design.
Whether the Movie renting feature is useful, we’ll leave up to you. The prices are a bit steep, especially with Netflix available now. If you aren’t up for renting movies, and don’t have another video playing app (outside the gallery), its a pretty handsome looking app without much else to get in the way of your video selection, but whether that’s worth the precious storage space on your phone is up to you.

Sprint Pushes Kyocera Echo Gingerbread Update Again

Sprint has started rolling out their second wave of Gingerbread updates for the Kyocera Echo, after having to pull the first one for fear of bricking devices. Taken straight from the Sprint website, there appear to be some extra goodies inside this update.
The software release upgrades Kyocera Echo to Android 2.3, Gingerbread. This version of Android improves download management through the Downloads application, offering the user easy access to any file downloaded from the browser, email or another application. It also implements Swype 3.0 adding two new capabilities: Tap Correction and Horizontal Word Choice List (predictive text).
Specific to Kyocera Echo, this software release will install Eco Mode, a new pre-loaded app that helps the user manage battery power life on the device. The user can pre-set a point at which the phone will go into a low-power consumption mode. When in Eco Mode, the phone will change various settings automatically, such as Screen Timeout, Display Brightness, Wallpaper, Auto-Sync, Haptic Feedback, and Auto-Rotate Screen so that the phone conserves power. The user can select which of these settings are implemented in Eco Mode.
As expected, Sprint got together with Kyocera to fix the old issue; there doesn’t seem to be any problem with this one. For all you Echo lovers out there, how goes the update? Let us know in the comments below!

Motorola DEFY+ rocks 1GHz processor, Gingerbread; Coming to Germany in September

It looks like Motorola still has plans for its rugged Android smartphone – Defy. Apparently the updated version of the device, dubbed DEFY+, will be released in Germany during the third week of September.
The information comes from the German website mobiFlip.de, which says that the local branch of O2 will get to sell the Android-powered device. The same site mentions the specs – the DEFY+ will rock a faster processor (1GHz vs 800MHz found in the original Defy) and pre-installed Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread instead of Froyo. Aside from that, rest of the guts will remain the same and so will the design. In that sense, expect identical 5-megapixel camera on the back, HSPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS, Bluetooth and an array of “standard for an Android smartphone” sensors like compass and accelerometer.
Finally when it comes to the price, the Motorola DEFY+ will be sold for about 300 EUR unlocked. In other words, it will be available for free on contracts starting at 30 EUR per month or so.

Archos' Arnova 7 G2 and 10 G2 tablets launch in Hong Kong, taste like Gingerbread

8-incher at the FCC, and now our brethren at Engadget Chinese are offering up a hands-on with two more second-gen Arnovas: the Arnova 7 G2 and 10 G2. These made-over slates best their predecessors with Gingerbread and capacitive touchscreens. The original 7-inch tablet ran Froyo while its big brother came with Eclair; both sported resistive displays. The pair will also see a spec bump in the processor department, with the inclusion of a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 -- likely the same processor found in their 8-inch sibling. While we do have Hong Kong pricing -- HK$1,680 (or $215 US) and HK$1,980 (about $250 US) -- we've yet to land a release date. So, for now, we'll just stick with "coming soon to a retailer near you?" If the wait is too much to bear, hop on past the break for some hands-on love from our Chinese counterparts.

HTC Desire HD and Incredible S Android 2.3 Gingerbread going OTA now

HTC has confirmed it is pushing out the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the HTC Desire HD and HTC Incredible S. The OTA update will be flagged up with a message on the smartphones themselves, and bring the handsets up to speed with newer HTC devices like the HTC Desire S.

Of course you’ll still have HTC Sense and all the usual apps, but we’re expecting a little extra speed and stability thanks to the joys of Gingerbread. HTC advises backing up your phone before you upgrade, though it’s not clear if the update will actually wipe your phone in the process.
We’re checking our Desire HD now and will report back when we find out more. Let us know how you get on in the comments!

Notion Ink Tablet gets Gingerbread update, does anyone care anymore?

Notion Ink has added a new chapter to their two year old odyssey of building their Adam Android tablet from scratch. Notion has confirmed an update providing Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a new browser, and even a new eBook reader client. As you well know, Notion has been blogging the process step by step, giving users an inside peek on how tablets are created. For awhile, we thought they’d disappeared. Then last month, they announced updates to their tablet were forth coming. But since Adam was launched, Notion has run into customer service and shipping issues which has caused many who were eagerly awaiting release to seek other options. So the question is … does anyone really care?

Notion says that updating to Gingerbread moves them towards the goal of acclimating the Kernel and all apps closer to a merge to Honeycomb, which will require converting to eMMC OS. In addition to Gingerbread and the new eBook reader, usability issues resolved, a new multi-tasking environment added, and even simple video and music players.
CEO Rohan Shravan said that the delays before had been due to licensing issues pertaining to the book reader. Issues that appear to have been cleared up. The update is again promised here, but remains to be seen in the fleshy text. Shravan also goes on to say that the process has been a journey requiring “determination,” “the ability to learn fast,” “understand” their critics, and “keep moving forward.”
But could it be it too little to late?

China’s Meizu M9 Receives Speedy Gingerbread Update

Looks like those guys over at Meizu are on top of things these days. With the launch of their successful M9 many people wondered what the future of the device would hold for consumers. All of those fears can be put to rest with the Meizu M9 users receiving their first taste of Android 2.3 Gingerbread. This came in the form of a downloadable update which I think more companies should start looking into seeing how it can get an update out to users quicker than waiting around for a carrier to push out an OTA. Just my two cents.
If you aren’t too familiar with the Chinese Meizu M9 I’ve gone ahead an provided a video of some of the unique UI elements in action.
Apparently, the update isn’t without it’s bugs and early adopters have been reporting back small annoyances like power and display issues. But given Meizu’s new track record, I’m sure they will be on top of offering a new update soon enough to deal with said issues. Now c’mon guys, I think its time to officially welcome Meizu users into the Android family.

T-Mobile G2x Android 2.3 Gingerbread Preview

Well what do you know? Looks like someone got their hands on an early build of Android 2.3 Gingerbread for T-Mobile’s G2x. It’s Chris Ziegler of This is My Next and by the looks of it, there’s not a whole heck of a lot of surprises, but increased enjoyability nonetheless. Have a look and let us know if you’ll be backing out of Cyanogen long enough to get yourself the official real deal Gingerbread when the time comes.

As you may already be aware, the G2x comes stocked with Android 2.2 Froyo in a vanilla flavoring. This tasty combination means that aside from a few apps here and there, this version of Android is in the original Google-made state. There’s no custom user interface sitting on top of it – you know what that means? It means a much easier path to getting an update to the next version of Android. This means that the device will have Android 2.3 Gingerbread sooner than later.
Now you’re already essentially able to get Gingerbread if you’re the hacking type by heading over to the CyanogenMod 7 for G2x post from a few days ago. If you’re into the real deal from Google, do press on:
Factoids gleaned from Ziegler at TIMN:

• This update will be Android 2.3.3, not Android 2.3.4 with Google Talk Video Calling.
• Scrolling and touch sensitivity appear to be notably improved.
• Gingerbread keyboard, improved text highlighting
• No Tags app, Nexus S Gingerbread system sounds not present
• Gingerbread UI in menus, status bar, dialer, and in glow at the end of lists – buzz!
• Stock Gingerbread camera app (replacing LG’s custom Froyo camera app)

Android 2.3.3 Allegedly Previewed on T-Mobile G2x [Video]

T-Mobile confirmed that their newest phone – the T-Mobile G2X – would be getting Gingerbread “very soon”. If this preview build acquired by This Is My Next is anything to go by then it would appear T-Mobile wasn’t the least bit bluffing. They bring us 7 minutes of footage but it really isn’t anything we haven’t seen on other Gingerbread devices. Just know that it’s pretty damn stable and expect T-Mobile to roll it out sometime this month (hopefully within the next two weeks).
PS: I say “allegedly” in the article title because of how easy it is to theme deodexed Android ROMs and change build.prop files. We trust the folks at This Is My Next (some very trusted names in technology media), though, and we’re fairly certain they wouldn’t go through the trouble of faking this just for content’s sake.
