HTC tablet packing Tegra 3 rumored for February 2012

We all know that the Tegra 3 quad-core chip for tablets is coming and will be the chipset that most high-end Android tablets use. A new rumor is swirling around that says HTC is getting a tablet ready for launch in February 2012 that uses the Tegra 3 hardware. The rumors also claim that HTC has two new smartphones coming in the same time period.

The launch of the tablet is pegged for MWC 2012. The tip comes from Chinese paper Commercial Times and the paper claims that this will be the only Android tablet we see from HTC in 2012. The goal is said to be getting the new Tegra 3 chipset onto the market ahead of the widely expected Q3 launch of Windows 8 tablets.
HTC will offer up its own Windows tablets said to be using the ARM build of the Win 8 OS. I think that a bunch of smartphone fans out there will be much more interested in the smartphone that is tipped to be coming using the Tegra 3 chipset. The little beast is said to have a 4.7-inch screen with a super high pixel density greater than that of the iPhone 4S.

New HTC Rezound Video Featuring MGK – Tears Up The Streets With Beats Audio

A new HTC Rezound video was uploaded to HTC’s YouTube account today. The Inception style commercial, featuring music by Machine Gun Kelly, prominently displays Beats Audio and not much else. Surprising, seeing how I would think Verizon/HTC or whoever would want potential customers to know that the HTC Rezound will be the first 1280×720 HD display equipped smartphone to hit the market. But then again, maybe that’s not mainstream enough. Let me know what you thought of the video but first… lace up!

HTC Rezound shipping early from Verizo

Well folks, it looks like Verizon may be not only taking orders early for the recently announced HTC Rezound, but they are shipping it early too. A few lucky users ordered early by simply calling in and ordering over the phone with a Verizon Rep and chose overnight shipping. Low and behold today, November 9th, the Rezound apepared on their doorsteps. The device is set to launch November 14th so someone might be in a little trouble over this one.

The HTC Rezound was officially announced last week after several leaks of the phone, and was set to launch November 14th from Verizon Wireless. This 4.3″ 1280 x 720p HD smartphone with a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor and 4G LTE is already hitting a few lucky customers doorsteps. The entire unboxing video can be seen below, but first check out our hands-on roundup.

Apparently our friends over at Phandroid had a few lucky forum memebers that were also able to do this exact thing. Called in and ordered the HTC Rezound this morning and it has already shipped, with a delivery date of November 11th no less. I thought the 11th was the day of the DROID RAZR, but apparently not. This is just hitting the wires and the video above clearly shows some lucky buyers received the new HTC Rezound today in the mail. If this was the phone you were waiting for I’d be calling Verizon right about now and trying to get one early. Feel free to drop us a comment below if you have any luck.
As usual we will be reviewing this device in the usual Android Community fashion so stay tuned for our take on this new Beats Audio packing HD smartphone from Verizon and HTC.

HTC Thunderbolt getting official MIUI support, download the ROM now

The iPhone-aping MIUI family of custom Android ROMs is gaining a lot of support lately, and not just for that pretty interface. The latest device to get the official nod from the MIUI team is the HTC Thunderbolt, after the patient and dutiful efforts of the independent developers. The Thunderbolt won’t be added to the MIUI tree for a while, but you can download the latest feature-complete version from RootzWiki now.

For the uninitiated, MIUI is a community-created ROM that runs on a variety of Android phones, with a homescreen and color scheme that should be familiar to those with a hankering for iDevices. Phones like the Samsung Galaxy S II, Optimus 2X and DROID Incredible are officially supported. New and improved versions of the ROM are posted each and every Friday, making MIUI a popular choice for those who have to be on the bleeding edge. Full theme support and a variety of Gingerbread customizations are present.
While the latest version of the (currently) unofficial Thunderbolt port is far from perfect, all the important bits are there, including access to Verizon’s 4G LTE. MMS is still non-functional, though that’s being actively pursued by lead dev “DroidVicious”. Some users are still reporting some battery issues and trouble getting a GPS fix. Try it out on your rooted Thunderbolt, but remember: Nandroid backups are your friends.

HTC Ville leaks with ICS, super-slim profile and Super AMOLED display

HTC’s spring lineup is starting to come into focus. In addition to the jaw-dropping Edge, the HTC Ville has also been leaked to BGR. While its specs aren’t quite as world-conquering as the former, it’s an impressive handset in its own right that embraces Ice Cream Sandwich and HTC’s upcoming Sense 4.0.

The Ville uses a 4.3-inch qHD (960 x 540) Super AMOLED screen, which is smaller than the Edge’s in both size and resolution. Note the lack of Android navigation buttons in the leaked render, an clear indication of Ice Cream Sandwich. Power comes from a dual-core 1.5Ghz Snapdragon processor and a 1650mAh battery. HTC’s unibody design precludes NFC, unfortunately, but the Ville will be less than 8 millimeters thin and features Beats audio, as do all of HTC’s upcoming high-end phones.
The Ville is rumored for an April release along with the Edge, with an announcement at the Mobile World Congress in February. Currently the phone is set for HSPA+, which probably means a Europe-focused launch at the start. That doesn’t mean that is won’t come to the US, just that it probably won’t be released there initially – like the Desire and Sensation before it, the Ville seems likely to be a workhorse platform for several HTC models. We’ll add the disclaimer that all this information is wildly unofficial at the moment, so consider nothing set in stone.

More HTC Edge details: NFC, 8.8mm, and Sense 4.0

Does the Galaxy Nexus leave you cold? Is the DROID RAZR too anemic for your power-hungry tastes? Is the Optimus LTE just a let-down? Then set your lustful eyes upon the top-secret HTC Edge, because according to some recent leaks to BGR, it’s the top contender for the heavyweight champion of the Android world.

According to an anonymous tipster (who lamentably didn’t have any new photos) the Edge will indeed be the first smartphone to feature Nvidia’s monster quad-core Tegra 3 processer running at a blistering 1.5Ghz. The processor is backed up by a full gigabyte of RAM and 32 gigs of on-board storage. The phone itself is updated as 8.8mm thin – very slim for a device with this much horsepower – but must go without a MicroSD card slot. The screen is a massive 4.7-inch 720p panel using the latest in S-LCD technology. Optical lamination makes the screen seem to float just below the glass with no space for air or dust. NFC and a large 1800mAh battery are included.
An 8 megapixel camera and 720p front cam combine with Beats Audio the as-yet unseen Sense 4.0 to round out the package. There’s no mention of which Android version the Edge is running, but with a probable 2012 release date, we’ve got to hope it’s Ice Cream Sandwich. (Those navigation buttons on the front don’t automatically mean Gingerbread – ICS can use its soft buttons selectively.) Keep in mind that this is all very much rumor, and while the original photo/render looks legitimate enough, there’s nothing set in stone so far.

HTC device codename list revealed, seems pretty accurate

Whoa, check out this list of codenames that was just leaked regarding that all popular smartphone brand HTC. Apparently this is a list of their upcoming device codenames and from my first initial glance this is highly accurate. Plenty of those have already hit the market and we’ve been hearing a few others lately too, like the just revealed HTC Edge.

It seems our friends at pocketnow received this huge list of upcoming devices from HTC and have been sitting on it, but after watching every recently launched device appear on the list, like the Rezound (Vigor), Sensation XL and more they’ve decided to share it for all so check it out below.
Act

Their super secret HTC ninja source mentioned that not all will be used, but so far we’ve seen what — 11 or so of those hit the market in the past few months. Just to name a few we have the Vigor as the Rezound, Runnymede as the Sensation XL, Holiday, Prime, Pico, Omega, Jet, Ruby, Bliss, and Edge are among a few that have came out into the wild already. Click those links to see our coverage and more details on each, if you dare.
I don’t know about you guys but that is a pretty accurate list so far, and with a few months left in 2011 we may end up seeing plenty more get checked off the list here shortly. From looking over things it appears this might only be smartphones because I don’t see the HTC Puccini tablet listed in there, but we could be wrong. Either way it looks like HTC has some extra special devices coming soon. With codenames such as “Fighter” or “Villa” we can expect some awesome devices coming soon. Let us know if any of these sound familiar, or if you have one and would like to share some details.

HTC Edge: Quad-core phone images leaked

Whoa, Monday just got a lot more exciting. We have just been tipped with some photos of a smartphone being called the HTC Edge, the companies very first quad-core phone. This could also be the first actual quad-core smartphone if you think about it. We are hearing this will basically be the top dog of them all and combine everything HTC has to offer into one. a 4.7″ 1280 x 720p HD display, Beats Audio, and of course that quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor.

Initial reports are suggesting a 1.5 GHz quad-core processor but we are still digging for more details. In the past almost every HTC phone has came with Qualcomm processors so this would be a huge change of direction, so that is my first doubt. Second NVIDIA Tegra 2 is only 1.0 GHz although a 1.5 GHz quad-core does sound amazing. So basically we are hearing a 4.7″ quad-core beast with 1GB of RAM, 32GB internal storage, 8 megapixel camera on the rear, 2 up front for video chat, Beats Audio and more all into an awesome looking device around 10mm thin.
According to PocketNow this is a credible source, but for now this is probably all just speculation but sounds amazing and I want one now. We are seeing capacitive buttons on the rendered image (looking pretty real) so that could mean Android 2.3 Gingerbread although I’m sure many were hoping for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Obviously a flagship device like this would get the update, but you’d think it would come out of the box with Ice Cream Sandwich. This early, with NVIDIA not even officially announcing the Tegra 3 quad-core yet this phone is highly acceptable to both OS, and design changes. There is also no talk of 4G LTE here but that will most likely come later. If you ask me this looks like the Sensation and the recently announced HTC Rezound made a baby, and it looks beautiful.
Developing… stay tuned for more details!

HTC releases Desire Gingerbread kernel source code

Good news for anyone involved with tinkering around with software for the venerable HTC Desire. In accordance with open source rules, HTC has just released the kernel source code for the device's Gingerbread update, which was offered as an optional RUU for GSM Desires back in August. The move follows the release of a slew of other source code for more recent devices over the weekend, and should help out anyone involved with the lively Desire custom ROM scene.

Remember, as ever, that this code is for developers only, and won't be of much use to the average user (or even the average ROM flasher).

HTC confirms Ice Cream Sandwich updates for Sensation, more

HTC has revealed its initial upgrade plans for Ice Cream Sandwich, confirming that the new HTC Vivid along with most of the company’s other recent high-end devices will get Android 4.0. According to HTC, the Sensation, Sensation XL and Sensation XE will all get ICS upgrades, along with the HTC Rezound, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G and HTC Amaze 4G.

The actual upgrade process itself won’t kick off until early in 2012, giving HTC’s engineers time to get the platform up to speed with their hardware. It’s unclear at this stage what HTC will do with Sense, the company’s custom interface, but the assumption is that HTC will continue to reskin Android even on Ice Cream Sandwich.
HTC says it is “continue to assess” its range to see what other existing devices can handle an Android 4.0 upgrade, and will release more specific timescales soon. Samsung announced its own Ice Cream Sandwich update plans late last month.
More on Ice Cream Sandwich in our Google Q&A.
“HTC knows how excited our fans are to get their hands on Google’s latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, so we’re thrilled today to announce the first wave of HTC phones that will receive upgrades: We can confirm the brand new HTC Vivid is upgradeable to Ice Cream Sandwich. In addition, Ice Cream Sandwich is coming in early 2012 to a variety of devices including the HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation XL and HTC Sensation XE, as well as the HTC Rezound, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G and HTC Amaze 4G through close integration with our carrier partners. We’re continuing to assess our product portfolio, so stay tuned for more updates on device upgrades, timing and other details about HTC and Ice Cream Sandwich.”

HTC Vivid Review

The HTC Vivid has the distinction of being one of the first phones to take advantage of AT&T’s fledgeling LTE network, a feature it shares with its launch partner the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket. But the Vivid isn’t relying on a single bullet point to make its purchase case – the dual-core Gingerbread phone has some high-end specs and a huge 4.5-inch qHD screen. Does the high-end featureset and a fancy new network connection make the Vivid a worthy buy?

Hardware
The first thing you notice upon picking up the Vivid is its heft. The thick plastic and metal construction makes it tip the scales at 6.24 ounces, about 30% heavier than phones of the same general dimensions from Motorola and Samsung. The weight gives the phone a definite high-end feel, but what it also gives is, well, weight. It’s up to you whether or not that’s an important statistic, but after carrying the Vivid around in my pocket for a few days, I was definitely wanting a lighter phone.
The phone has a distinctly angular style that’s accented by a full metal backplate. Slide it off and you’ll find a SIM card slot with a fancy new AT&T 4G LTE mini-SIM, and the battery, which must be removed to access the empty MicroSD card slot. The slim and unfortunately weak back speaker sits on top of the 8 megapixel rear camera, which is paired with a sharp 1.3 megapixel front shooter. The left side of the phone holds a standard MicroUSB port, the right a silver volume rocker and the top the power button, all without error or complaint. HTC’s standard capacitive buttons reside below the screen.

The screen itself is a standard TFT LCD. It’s sharp and clear, even at the high end of the size scale for Android phones. Unfortunately the brightness and viewing angles aren’t anything to write home about – for that you’d be better to look to the Skyrocket’s Super AMOLED panel – but resolution junkies will be happy. Reading and video were a little dark for my tastes. 16GB of internal memory should be enough for most, and those who require more can expand with MicroSD. Inside the retail packaging you’ll find nothing but a wall-wart and a USB charge/data cable.
Over several days I had no issues with any of the hardware, include Bluetooth, which can sometimes be picky on HTC phones. The only real complaint I have besides the weight is that the all-metal back is unfinished, with the exception of an HTC logo and some grip dimples. It makes the phone all too easy to scratch, so expect the back to start looking considerably worn after a few weeks.

Software
HTC Sense is in its Sunday best on the Vivid. There’s nothing really to say in addition to what’s already been said on the software. On the generous 1.2Ghz dual-core processor there’s no noticeable slowdown on the homescreen or when switching between apps, and heavy-hitting tasks like Flash, Netflix and the like don’t phase the phone at all. AT&T’s standard bloatware load is here, but unlike some recent phones including the Skyrocket, none of it can be removed – bummer. Still, to HTC’s credit it doesn’t appear to slow things down.
If you’re tempted by the prospect of LTE, you probably want the latest and greatest software as well, and I’m happy to report that AT&T has confirmed the Vivid will be getting a tasty scoop of Ice Cream Sandwich. The upgrade won’t come until the spring of next year however, probably owing to HTC’s Sense skin itself. You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have… manufacturer customizations. Until then, Gingerbread will have to satisfy.
Phone, Data and Battery

If you’re lucky enough to live in one of AT&T’s LTE coverage areas, you’re in for a treat. Even with only three bars of LTE I got 16-18Mbps down consistently. That’s likely to lower over the next year, but for now, the network is under low stress and you should see some great performance. Standard 3G/4G reception seemed in line with other AT&T phones. For a more in-depth look at the LTE network, check out our data speed tests.
Call quality was generally good, with one exception. The front speaker had some volume issues, and combined with a few long calls in the low-coverage area around my home, talking became a chore on more than one occasion. If you generally stick to AT&T’s four or five bar locations – like pretty much all of their major metro LTE coverage zones – you should be fine. If you’re in the habit of traveling outside of major cities, voice performance may suffer.

The 1650Mhz battery seems to do well on standard operations like browsing and music playback – if you never turned the phone off you’d think it was great. Unfortunately the standby performance isn’t as great. Without some careful management of apps and usage, you’re probably not going to see a full day’s use out of the Vivid, and that’s doubly true for LTE users.
Media
The camera and video were typical of HTC’s later offerings, good but not great. In bright lighting your shots will be clear and distinct, but indoors or after sundown you’ll see a familiar fuzzy lines and muted colors. On the plus side, the 1.3 megapixel front camera was noticeably sharper than others, or so I was told from the other end of the phone line.

Wrap-up
If you’re a fan of HTC’s solid design, you’ll like the Vivid. Some cutting-edge internals and access to LTE speeds doesn’t hurt, but a sub-par battery and weak speakers do. Still, at a new lower price of $99.99 on a new contract, it’s a great deal for a fast, big-screened phone, even if the screen itself is merely OK. Make sure and get your hands on a Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket before making your final decision.

AT&T drops HTC Vivid & Samsung Skyrocket prices by $100

When AT&T announced its first smartphones to take advantage of its new fancy-pants LTE network, a few balked at the $199 and $249 prices for the HTC Vivid and Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket, respectively. Well, rejoice bargain hunters: the price for each has dropped by a cool $100. That makes the Vivid just $99.99 and the Skyrocket $149.99 – not bad for a pair of phones with specs that are just shy of the top of the line.
AT&T didn’t give a reason for the price drop, but it’s likely that a lot of people weren’t thrilled at the prospect of paying a considerable premium for LTE. After all, the LTE portion of the network still only  extends to a handful of metro markets, and if you don’t live in one, a modest bump up from other Android phones like the Galaxy S II and Inspire 4G doesn’t really warrant the increased price. Curiously, the reduction makes the Galaxy S II Skyrocket $50 less than the plane-Jane version of the Galaxy S II. If you’re an AT&T customer who wants a GSII, there’s no reason not to go with the Skyrocket.
The price drop is currently only showing up on the online phone pages themselves – for some reason, the price drop isn’t showing up on the generic Smartphone page. That might mean that the deal isn’t for retail stores, or that it’s simply a promotional price. Either way, they’re great deals, assuming that you’re in the market and your 2-year contract is up.

AT&T says HTC Vivid and Samsung Skyrocket will get ICS updates

AT&T’s first two LTE smartphones both run Android Gingerbread, but they’ve got the unfortunate luck of being released just a few weeks before Ice Cream Sandwich lands on the Galaxy Nexus. AT&T has confirmed that both the HTC Vivid and the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket will be updated to Android 4.0  eventually. No specifics were mentioned, but a nebulous “early 2012″ should see the rollouts begin.

The news isn’t altogether surprising, since both phones offer high-end hardware and have a place of distinction in AT&T’s lineup. AT&T doesn’t want the prospect of handsets stuck on outdated software (for too long, anyway) to deter sales, set to begin this Sunday. Even so, the confirmation is appreciated – all too often Android enthusiasts are left to wonder about this sort of thing.
If the timeframe seems long, it’s probably because both Samsung and HTC need to integrate their custom user interfaces with Ice Cream Sandwich. HTC is quoting a Q1 timeframe for the ICS update to the Rezound on Verizon. Both TouchWiz and Sense are pretty extensive modifications of Android’s base code, so the wait could be a long one for almost all of each manufacturer’s phones.
For a better look at each of these new phone,s check out our hands-on coverage of the HTC Vivid and the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket.

Best Buy offers free HTC phones with Modern Warfare 3 purchase

Oh, Best Buy, you’re always reliable for a retail publicity stunt. Less than a week after tying some of the last retail HP TouchPads in the world to full computer purchases, the big box  retailer is offering free HTC smartphones to gamers who purchase the upcoming mega-release Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Naturally, you’ll have so sign up for a new two-year wireless contract to qualify.

Android models on offer include the EVO 4G, the DROID Incredible 2 and the Inspire 4G. Naturally these aren’t late-breaking smartphones – don’t expect to go into Best Buy on November 11th and walk out with MW3 and a new DROID RAZR, unless you’ve got an extra three c-notes in your pocket. That being said, this could certainly be a fortuitous opportunity for a select subset of gamers who also want a mid-range phone, and happen to be contract-free at the moment.
Once you get your new HTC phone and your hands stop shaking from the PTSD brought on by the game, you can install the official MW3 Android app. It’s not a mobile game in and of itself, but it allows you to modify your soldier’s weapons and equipment loadout, and it will be compatible with all major versions of Modern Warfare 3. If you’re still itching for some pint-sized world conflict, try the totally-not-Call-of-Duty-inspired Modern Combat 3.

HTC Rezound set to get Ice Cream Sandwich early 2012

Today HTC and Verizon have joined forces and made the HTC Rezound official during the event in NYC. Along with showing off the new 4G LTE smartphone and detailing all its specs, they also mentioned a few important things regarding Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. HTC specifically called the Rezound “ICS ready” and mentioned they have a strick update plan set for early 2012.

While they didn’t announce anything specific regarding a date for this new 4.3″ dual-core smartphone packing an impressive 1280 x 720p resolution, it does give those potential buyers the added security of knowing the latest and greatest should be coming, and soon. For a breakdown of the event and what all was detailed you can see our official announcement here. With a 720p display, a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, Android 2.3 Gingerbread and Beats Audio this looks to be an impressive handset.

The brand new HTC Rezound can be yours come November 14th for just $299 (with a new 2 year agreement of course). While we don’t have any specifics on an off contract price we expect it to be priced above $600 just like the equally impressive DROID RAZR. With 720p, 4G LTE, Beats Audio, and a promise of ICS what more could you ask for? Other than maybe the Galaxy Nexus. We will have the HTC Rezound in for review very very soon so stay tuned right here at Android Community for all the pictures you can handle.
