Rumor: Apple is developing 7.85-inch iPad to compete with Kindle Fire

Apple may begin selling smaller, 7.85-inch iPads next year to compete with newer tablet devices, according to sources within the US firm’s supply chain who are quoted by a DigiTimes report.
The company is rumoured to already be sourcing parts to begin producing the units by mid next year:
In addition to purchasing 7.85-inch panels from LG Display, Apple will also buy panels from AU Optronics (AUO), indicated the sources, adding that makers in the supply chain are likely to begin production of the 7.85-inch models at the end of the second quarter of 2012.
The rumoured size has been selected to allow the iPad to compete with, but differentiate itself from, the 7-inch Kindle fire and a number of large-sized smartphones that manufacturers like Samsung has introduced to the market.
Apple is also thought to be launching the third version of the iPad during the first quarter of next year, in response to the growth of tablet PCs, which are expected to reach 60 million units by the end of this year
Previous iPad rumours have included speculation that a thinner iPad 3 will land in March. Back in October, analysts predicted that production of the iPad 3 would be under way before the end of the year, by which time an initial 1 million devices are thought to be ready.

Rumor With a Capital R: Galaxy Nexus on Verizon Delayed?

I have a feeling a ton of you won’t like this one. Apparently Droid-Life has heard it from multiple independent sources within a short time frame that the Galaxy Nexus has been delayed. We also received one light report of this earlier this morning but decided not to report on it.

Although Verizon never gave a release date to look forward to, all sources and signs pretty much pointed to this Friday, December 9th. I know it’s hard to grasp that they may have delayed this phone even further than they should have considering how soon the rest of the world got it.
We’re not sure what might have triggered them to delay the device if this rumor is indeed true. At this point we’re not sure what to believe anymore. My advice? Don’t get too happy over ANY positive rumors – stick to official press releases with official information and no one will get hurt (emotionally or physically).
[Update]: And apparently the equipment manager page that said 12/9 yesterday is now saying “launch date is coming soon.” Oh well.

Rumor: HTC EVO View 4G Getting Honeycomb Before the End of the Year

While the HTC Flyer’s Honeycomb upgrade is rolling out across Europe right now, the United States wasn’t given any rollout date other than “soon”. We have Sprint and T-Mobile with their own versions of the flyer and one of those networks (hint: they like the color yellow) may be getting it sooner than we anticipated.

Sprint is rumored to be getting the upgrade before year’s end, a great turnaround time if this turns out to be true. We won’t be mad if this doesn’t turn out to be true since HTC never gave a specific time window themselves but we’ll be all the more joyous if we can get to New Year’s Eve with a piece of Honeycomb on this 7 inch device. Rumored DROID RAZR specs: “faster than the iPhone 4S”

The Nexus Prime isn’t the only superphone making headlines at the moment. Motorola has its own announcement coming just a day before Google’s, and it’s expected to reveal the DROID RAZR (AKA the DROID HD or DROID Spyder) along with Verizon in New York City on the 18th. Boy Genius Report has yet another tipster with the inside line on the new hardware, and it’s certainly worth a look.

According to the anonymous tipster, the DROID RAZR will feature a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and a full gigabyte of RAM, making it “faster than the iPhone 4S”. That’s a hard claim to quantify considering the OS difference, but it certainly holds true from a hardware perspective (not that that’s anything new with high-end Android phones). The screen will be a standard 4.3 inches, much like the qHD screens already seen on the DROID X2 and DROID BIONIC. The device will be the “thinnest LTE phone to date”, a claim that certainly appears possible, considering some of the leaked photos we’ve seen.
The shot at the iPhone 4S might be specious, but in any case, the DROID RAZR looks like it’ll be a tough competitor on Verizon, meeting or beating the best of the current smartphone lineup. It’s hard to say how long that will last with Samsung’s Nexus Prime so close at hand, but as always in the Android world, choice is a good thing. Check out the promo video for the upcoming Motorola/Verizon event for some suitably speedy imagery:

Rumor: Google preparing its own MP3 store

Android users have a lot of options when it comes to music. Amazon’s MP3 Store has become a de facto Android music platform, and there’s plenty of 3rd party stores and apps that offer paid and free song downloads. Google’s going head-to-head with Amazon with its cloud-based Google Music, but according to the New York Times, they may be after a more direct sales model with a full-on MP3 store.

Google’s no stranger to direct media sales. Google Books has been selling free and paid books for over a year, and the Android Market now rents movies and other videos to phones and tablets. But several music executives (all, apparently, without names) say that Google is preparing its music store for a launch very soon. The store would be integrated with Google Music Beta in the same way that Amazon’s Cloud Player and Apple’s iCloud are already working
The search giant has been down this road before. Google wanted to introduce a music locker service earlier this year, but negotiations with music labels broke down. If they’ve finally secured the rights from from the musical powers that be, as Amazon and Apple have already done, Android could finally have an integrated music store. It’d be almost impossible for anyone to catch up with iTunes, at least in the short term, but the competition would certainly be a plus.
Could a Google MP3 store be yet another announcement at the upcoming Nexus Prime/Ice Cream Sandwich event in Hong Kong? Keep an eye on Android Community Tuesday night to find out.

Samsung Nexus Prime hitting Verizon October 27th [Rumor]

Word on the street is the Samsung Nexus will be launching on Verizon Wireless come October 27th. Since we still don’t have an official name I’ll just start calling it the Samsung Nexus instead of Galaxy, Prime, DROID, and all that other jazz. With all the recent rumors and teaser videos this just might end up being accurate but for now we’ll chalk this up as a rumor and keep on dreaming.

Last week there was a similar date listed that the Prime would be replacing the DROID Charge late October according to Best Buy, so this lines up nicely with that little tidbit. Now an anonymous tipster has sent over some launch dates to DL that are said to be floating around internally at Verizon “confirming” the October 27th launch date for the new Nexus.
Device Launch Information
Please note Launch Dates Are subject to change:
Motorola Xoom 4G LTE Tablet – 10/6
Pantech Hotshot – 10/6
Samsung Stratosphere 4G- 10/13
Pantech 4G Global Modem- 10/20
Samsung Prime (Replacement for Charge) 10/27
Next week at CTIA, Samsung Unpacked will be getting a “Google Episode” with what many think will be the new Samsung Nexus and Ice Cream Sandwich. Then Samsung pushed out this awesome teaser video late last night giving us the first glance at the new Nexus and it has everyone up in arms patiently waiting to see what is coming next.
When Google unveiled the Nexus S it was available within a matter of weeks, so we are all hoping (and praying) the same thing goes this time around for the new Samsung Nexus. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard October for ICS, so if everything does pan out we should be seeing Android 2.4 (or 4.0) Ice Cream Sandwich and the new Samsung Nexus before November, that would be awesome.
Stay tuned for more information. As previously stated, we’ll be live at CTIA and Samsung Unpacked to bring any and all news from Samsung and Google.

HTC Radar vs ZTE Tania (Rumours)

We pit the HTC Radar up against the mysterious ZTE Tania – both devices are Windows Phone 7 Mango

We see how ZTE’s forthcoming Tania handset compares to HTC’s Radar in a battle of the budget Windows Mango smartphones.

Form:
HTC Radar - 120.5x61.5x10.9mm, 137g
ZTE Tania – Unknown
HTC is extending its signature ‘softly’ shaped handsets to its Windows Phone devices. The Radar looks pretty much like every other HTC handset ever made, which means it isn’t unattractive by any sense of the word, but it is rather generic.
ZTE has a habit of making handsets which look remarkably like HTC phones and the Tania is no exception, though it has to be said it does look a little cleaner and more elegant than HTC’s Radar.
From what we've seen, the Tania definitely seems to have more about it in the 'wow-factor' department. And for a budget handset, this is quite rare.
Winner – ZTE Tania

Display:
HTC’s Radar is fitted with a 3.8-inch S-LCD capacitive touchscreen, the resolution is 480x800 pixels giving a pixel density of 246ppi.
As usual for HTC phones the screen is made from Gorilla Glass so it’s not going to smash easily, and features multi-touch input.
Accelerometer and gyro sensors allow for screen interface rotation.
The Tania uses a larger 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen at the same resolution as the Radar, giving a pixel density of 217ppi.
The Tania’s larger screen is nice but with the Radar you get the same resolution and a much higher pixel density, meaning it’ll have a much sharper picture.
Winner – HTC Radar

Storage:
ZTE’s Tania comes with 4GB of onboard storage and 512MB of RAM to boost the processor. The HTC has the same 512MB of RAM but doubles the internal storage with 8GB of space.
Windows Phone 7 handsets, for the most part, do not support microSD. This means your limited to internal storage, which is 4GB and 8GB respectively in this case.
Taking things as they are it seems the HTC Radar has more storage space to play with, which makes it the more appealing of the two given the RAM is on par.
If you want expandable storage and Windows Phone 7 Mango, you'll have to wait until Nokia's handsets arrive. They're the only ones that will support it – guess that was part of the deal all along.
Winner – HTC Radar

Processor:
Both phones run single core 1GHz processors with graphics processing units (GPU). The Radar uses a Qualcomm Scorpion on the MSM8255 Snapdragon chipset paired with an Adreno 205 GPU.
Each handset should be quite capable of decent performance thanks to the 1GHz clock speed and good optimisation of single core processors on the Windows Phone operating system.
Winner -Draw

Operating System:
These are both Windows Phone Mango powered handsets running the latest build of Microsoft’s operating system for smartphones.
Microsoft has added plenty of changes to the new build, but when running it you actually find it’s all rather subtle and contributes to an overall more slick and intuitive platform without being able to put your finger on precisely why.
Part of it is down to a greater integration of communication and social networking services, along with the system pushing more information out to you at all levels.
Mango’s ‘People’ hub goes to great efforts to aggregate all message and social network information from all your contacts into one easily accessible place, and it lets you respond simultaneously to multiple contacts across multiple mediums including webmail, exchange email, SMS and MMS text, instant messaging, Facebook statuses and Tweeting on Twitter.
Email inboxes can also be merged and pinned to the start menu keeping your emails right where you want them.
Performance has noticeably improved, which is saying something as it was pretty good before. You also get an excellent multi-tasking system this time round which keeps your non-active apps in hibernation, so they only cause minimal battery drain.
One of the really nice things about Windows Phone Mango is, because of Microsoft’s licensing agreements, manufacturers aren’t allowed to load their handsets with interface overlays and bloatware, so you’re getting the same build as the next guy with a different brand phone and it should run quite well all round.
Generally we’re pretty impressed with Windows Phone Mango, it’s easy to use and has a lot to offer most users. Android and iOS should be looking worried right now.
Winner - Draw

Camera:
Both phones are fitted with 5-megapixel cameras at 2560х1920 pixels and with LED flash, the Radar also has a VGA secondary camera. HTC’s device features autofocus, digital zoom, geo-tagging, video calling and 720p HD video capture.
Quite an even match on cameras here, both are adequate offerings without being anything exceptional.
Winner - Draw

Final Thoughts:
These phones are equally matched power-wise with equal processor specs, the camera setup is also very similar on both devices.
However, the HTC Radar comes out ahead on storage and display even if the ZTE Tania is a better looking phone.
As budget handsets they’re not earth-shattering but they’re a cheaper way of getting access to a very appealing operating system and, in fairness, they punch above their weight in terms of performance.

Motorola DROID 4 codenamed “Maserati” and will have 4G LTE [Rumor]

I must admit the codename “Maserati” gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside, although I’m not too big on slide out QWERTY keyboard smartphones. What we have here is a rumor so feel free to take this with a grain of salt. According to a few members of HowardForums the next device in the DROID slider evolution will be the DROID4 and is codenamed “Maserati”. They mention a few other things but first check out the awesome car below.

How often do I get to post an awesome supercar and call it a smartphone right? If the slide-out QWERTY keyboard and 4G LTE sound familiar its because we heard it a few weeks back thanks to the poem on twitter by @black_man_x and his friend Tom. A part of the poem even said “The one with the keyboard is what I enjoy” and you can see more on that by clicking here.
So what do we have here? Nothing really, just a bit of speculation unless the members from Howard Forums end up correct — and they often do. Basically all the details we have are that it will most likely be called the DROID4 just like the recent others in the naming scheme, but could also be called the DROID4 LTE and that makes a bit more sense. We have a rumored 4.0 or possibly a 4.3″ display, obviously a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, but the D-pad has gone missing and maybe that is because we’ll have ICS on board instead of Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Then given the name and title we can expect to also see Verizon Wireless 4G LTE on board, something the DROID3 really should have shipped with. This leakster also claims to have enjoyed some hands-on time with the Motorola Spyder too, so we’ll see when the time comes.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus/Prime to offer a QWERTY keyboard version [Rumor]

Just like I said earlier about the Droid Prime and Galaxy Nexus rumors earlier today, they will continue to drop as the days and weeks get closer. In another random tweet by the recently popular Tom at @tfleming223 we may have just received another tip about the upcoming Galaxy Nexus, or DROID Prime but more details are after the break.

After tons of tweets by Tom and his sidekick all weekend regarding a Samsung DROID Prime, Galaxy Nexus and an exclusive launch on Verizon coming November 3rd. He has now hinted at a built-in QWERTY keyboard version of this highly rumored smartphone. Again this is just a rumor, but both Tom and @black_man_x have been known in the past to have accurate information so I’m going to still take this with a few grains of salt, but imagine the possibility.

As if he’s had some hands-on with both of the devices today he tweeted, “The one with the keyboard is what I enjoy”. Leaving us all to start another round of rumors and speculation that we may see a QWERTY keyboard version of the next superphone. With a dual-core processor, Android 2.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, and a 1280 x 720p HD display that would be one superphone indeed. I have a feeling we will see some sort of Samsung slider coming to multiple carriers again soon. With ICS being a touchscreen only OS with no hardware buttons what would you really want a keyboard for, other than typing easily?
Rumors followed by more rumors is what we have here, but I figured you’d all love to hear about another possibility. Although I personally have no use for a QWERTY keyboard powered smartphone, I know many readers still do. Take this as you will and let your mind wander.
– Thanks cheese

Rumor: Rovio to Receive $1.2 Billion in Funding

Angry Birds or its creator Rovio Entertainment, and today is no exception. Rumor has it that the Finnish game company is in talks with an unknown investor to receive funding in the realm of $1.2 billion. Possibilities regarding the investors include Electronic Arts, Zyngia, and Walt Disney, all of which stand to gain from a collaboration with Rovio. Rovio themselves could use the money for a planned movie adaptation of Angry Birds, pushing its offices out beyond Finland, or creating toys and other products to capitalize on its already existing popularity. Of course, there are other things to spend a large amount of money on.
