Sony Ericsson superphone may be called as Xperia Ion

Over the past few weeks we’ve been hearing rumors about an upcoming Sony smartphone that features a high-resolution 13-megapixel camera and we don’t have a name for the phone besides the cryptic sounding “LT28at“. But according to the latest trademark registration from the company, Sony Ericsson has submitted an entry for a mobile phone named “Xperia Ion”. Could this be the name of the alleged superphone?
It’s no surprise that Sony Ericsson is sticking with the “Xperia” name – it’s already been established as the manufacturer’s Android line, (like the Galaxy line for Samsung), so a phone named Xperia Ion makes sense. The phone is touted to have a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 4.5″ Reality display (720 x 1280), a 13-megapixel back-illuminated camera sensor with LED flash, and a 720p front-facing camera (for HD video calling).
The phone could possibly be revealed at CES in just a few weeks, though a later Mobile World Congress debut isn’t out of the question either – provided this superphone turns out to be more than just rumors. Stay tuned for more details.

Sony Ericsson updating devices with Android 4.0 ICS in early 2012

Sony Ericsson has confirmed its Android 4.0 update coming in early 2012. In a blog post Sony Ericsson said, "Our developers are now busy merging our current Xperia software with the new features in Android 4.0". The first devices to receive the ICS update are Xperia Arc S, Xperia Neo V and Xperia Ray. Other Sony Ericsson devices such as the original Arc, the Xperia Play, original Neo and the Xperia Mini and Mini Pro duo - plus the Xperia Active and Live with Walkman are also slated to get the ICS update by March/April 2012. The update will be rolled out over several weeks. Thus, update will not be available at the same time, users will have to wait for their turn. The company must certify and approve the new software release with all the different technologies, networks, and hardware that a modern smartphone should work with. Now the new update is in certification and approval phase.

Android clear winner of 2011 Smartphones race

The year 2011 has been a great year for Android based smartphone manufacturers. Handset makers like Samsung, HTC, Sony & Motorola lead the Android handset market. Special mention goes to Samsung's Galaxy series of Android phones. The series boasts various range of Android smartphones for everyone ranging from 5000 INR to 30,000 INR.

According to Business Standard, Samsung Galaxy S II, priced at 30,100 INR has broken all the records. It not only became a hot-favourite of reviewers across the globe but also managed to hold ground against Apple’s smartphones. It seems to be one of the most powerful and user-friendly Android phones. Its 8MP camera is a very good replacement for a pocket camcorder.

Other Android phones which lead the list of Smartphones along with Galaxy SII & Apple 4S are HTC Sensation XL, Motorola Razr & Sony Ericsson's Xperia Arc S.

OnLive now supports Xperia Play

Being able to stream console-quality games to mobile phones is novel, but the touch screen controls offered via OnLive didn't really impress us much. If only there were an Android-powered mobile device that also offered physical buttons for gameplay...

Oh yeah, Sony made one: it's called the Xperia Play. OnLive has now been updated to support the "PlayStation Phone," enabling Play owners to play "almost all" games in the OnLive library.

Thanks to the slide-out controls of the Play, Xperia owners can play games like Saints Row: The Third and Assassin's Creed Revelations via OnLive's streaming client.

"From the moment we launched our OnLive Android app, gamers began asking about Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY game control support," OnLive founder Steve Perlman said in a press release.

If you don't have an Xperia Play but want button controls, OnLive also sells a proprietary Bluetooth controller for $50. An iOS version of the OnLive client is in the works as well.

Sony Ericsson LT28at 4G LTE 4.55″ 720p phone leaked with 13 megapixel camera

It appears that SONY really is going all in with Android because the details of this latest leaked phone sound extremely nice. This 4.55″ 1280 x 720p reality display packing smartphone is headed for AT&T with an awesome display and an equally impressive camera to snap some high quality beautiful photos. Leaked as the LT28at this phone could very well be their next flagship device and seen at CES 2012 coming up shortly. More details and photo samples below.

The image above is a render of the recently leaked more than a few times known as the Nozomi. Its codename is LT26i so seeing LT28at for this latest leak leaves us to believe this new leak will in fact be their next big flagship device while the Nozomi will be the Arc HD. We don’t have a lot of details other than a few highly impressive specs on screen and camera, as well as a few sample photos snapped with that impressive 13 megapixel camera.

We’ll have a 4.55″ 1280 x 720p HD display, AT&T 4G LTE and a whopping 13 megapixel on the back and a 720p HD camera up front. No other details are really available at this time but we’ll take what we can get. Hopefully some pictures of the actual device will be leaked soon but for now at least we get a few image quality samples. I sure hope whoever is pictured doesn’t work for Sony Ericsson because he might just be in trouble now. Below are the photos snapped using the 13 mexapixel camera and for now this is all we get but we’ll be sure to update once we see or hear more.

Shortly after, from late March or early April 2012 the Xperia™ arc, Xperia™ PLAY, Xperia™ neo, Xperia™ mini and mini pro, Xperia™ pro, Xperia™ active as well as Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman™ will all get the update.
Of course, Sony Ericsson warns that not all kits of any of these phones (meaning carrier versions) may not get the upgrade within this timeframe, if at all. That’s nothing new to note but there’s your disclaimer either way. Head on to Sony Ericsson’s site for more details. [Sony Ericsson Blog]

New Sony Ericsson Nozomi photos ooze style

Say what you will about Sony Ericsson’s current lineup of Android phones, but the Nozomi (AKA the Arc HD) is a looker no matter how you break it down. A tipster delivered a new set of leaked photos to GSMArena, showing off the high-end handset’s sharp corners and chrome accents. This is the first we’ve seen of the phone’s back, and while it’s a little thicker than we’d like, there’s just no denying the appeal of the slate.

Notably the Nozomi may be Sony’s first device to launch with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, as seen in this press shot. Then again, that may just be Sony’s latest customized version of Gingerbread, since today’s leaked shots feature a launcher that certainly isn’t ICS-native. On the inside you get a 1.5Ghz dual-core Snapdragon processor, and on the outside you get a delicious 1280 x 720 screen, though you’ll have to make due with whatever on-board storage Sony sees fit to include. There’s no MicroSD card slot to be found.
Even if the Nozomi doesn’t launch with Ice Cream Sandwich, it’ll likely get it soon enough. Sony has committed to an ICS upgrade to all current XPERIA phones, to the delight of owners stuck in two-year contracts. Though there’s no mention of a release date, the phone is coming sooner rather than later, since it features the soon-to-be-scrapped Sony Ericsson branding. We’ll probably be seeing this one at CES or Mobile World Congress early next year, so stay tuned.

Xperia Play heads to C-Spire, regional carrier ready for gaming

Regional carrier C-Spire apparently wants in on the gaming action here in Android and today have announced the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play will be available to C-Spire customers for just $49.99 starting today. Better late than never right? The phone is the same model already available from Verizon, that is also $49 from AT&T so this isn’t anything new — Just a good deal for those C-Spire users.

We have Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a single-core 1.0 GHz Qualcomm processor, 512MB of RAM and a 5 megapixel camera. The good stuff is the full out SONY Playstation controls once you slide this beast open. A gamers dream for sure!
With Sony opening the Playstation suite to others we should be seeing more and more games in the coming months, making the Play a decent choice especially for just $49.99 if you ask me. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is available today for C-Spire starting at $49.99 after a $50 MIR and a new 2-year contract so users will be shelling out a crisp $100 bill initially. Get your game on guys!

Sony Ericsson Xperia active is ready to rock and roll

Here is yet another Sony Ericsson smartphone to hit the masses, where it will sport the Xperia name – which means that it is guaranteed of getting an Ice Cream Sandwich update in due time. The Sony Ericsson Xperia active is a rugged device that is set to rock your world, no matter what kind of adventures you have it accompany you. Why do I say so? Well, the Xperia active is not only water resistant, but it is also dust-proof as well, where even wet fingers can be tracked by the 3″ multi-touchscreen display. It does not matter whether you are heading out for a rainy hike, climbing up and down snowy slopes or having the time of your life through mud-splattered bike trails, the Xperia active lives up to its name and more. Another thing is this, it does look better than Sonim’s handsets, but I don’t think it will be able to last falls from great heights.
Other hardware specifications include a built-in GPS, barometer and compass, where you are able to monitor your heart rate on-screen and ni realtime, thanks to ANT+ wireless networking technology, a reality display with Mobile BRAVIA engine for a more realistic rendering of images, a microSD memory card slot and Android 2.3.4 as the operating system of choice. Expect to fork out $369.99 for the Sony Ericsson Xperia active in an unlocked form factor.

Sony to drop Ericsson brand in mid-2012, focus only on smartphones

Sony has said that it will drop the Ericsson brand from smartphone devices in mid-2012 following its acquisition of Ericsson’s 50% stake in the Sony Ericsson joint venture for €1.05 billion in October.
Speaking to Times of India, a senior Sony executive noted that the Sony Ericsson brand would be phased out as the company looked to become a “complete smartphone company”, selling its new smartphones under the Sony label.
The move is aimed at galvanising Sony’s smartphone sales, which slowly picked up following Sony Ericsson’s decision to focus solely on developing smartphones that are powered by Google’s Android platform. With Sony Ericsson’s decision to phase-out its feature phone development, the new unit will invest significant amounts into its marketing and advertising channels – something that Sony Ericsson’s Kristian Tear, executive VP & head of sales & marketing, said was lacking in previous years:
“A lot of planning goes into getting the branding right but we will be done by middle of next year. It will also mean that the marketing and advertising investments will go up. We haven’t been as fierce as we were a few years back but we will step it up, refocus and invest more in brand-building in select markets and India is one of those markets.”
Times of India reports that the company as its stands holds around 2% of the global smartphone market. However, with Sony’s huge worldwide presence as the world’s biggest entertainment company, the company expects its mobile presence to gain from its assets:
“Sony is the world’s biggest entertainment company. We were earlier a 50-50 JV, but now that we are a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony Corp. We expect to gain from its assets on the content , technology and brand side.”
Sony’s acquisition still requires approval, so changes aren’t expected to be implemented until next year, including the phasing out of the Sony Ericsson brand. Executives have said that Sony will continue to focus on the value-end of the smartphone market, targeting India where it has a 19% and 12% share of the Indian and global Android market respectively.

Sony Ericsson Nozomi pictured running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)

The Sony Ericsson Nozomi (LT26i) has leaked for us in a very tiny cropped picture watermarked from sebbsit168.com. It’s looking quite sleek from what we can see, but there’s really no way to tell how small or large the display actually is. My guess is it’s right at around 4″. From playing around with the Nexus S running an AOSP Android 4.0 ROM, 4″ is a great size to run ICS on.

If you zoom into the photo you’ll notice a few things; first off under the Camera heading, you can see it will take 1920×1080 video capture. Next you’ll notice it has a dual core processor and even microSD support. I’ve always been a fan of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA line, and this phone looks the best by far. Unlike the Galaxy Nexus, it seems to have three softkeys included near the chin of the device, making navigation not completely dedicated to the display.
It looks extremely thin, but then again most recent XPERIA devices (such as the Ray) were. I hope it makes it here to the states soon, because it would be a shame for the Galaxy Nexus to not have some proper competition! But chances are, our main man Chris Davies over in London will get it first – as most Sony Ericsson devices hit international waters first.

FIFA 12 launches for Xperia Play and more

EA Mobile has announced that the FIFA 12 mobile game has launched for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play smartphone. We learned that the game was coming to the Xperia Play back in August as an exclusive until February of 2012. When the game was announced as a limited time exclusive for the Xperia Play we didn’t know exactly when it would be coming.

EA’s FIFA franchise is the most popular soccer franchise in the world and Sony Ericsson has scored quite a coup with landing the game as an exclusive throughout the holiday season. The game will let players play as their favorite soccer stars with famous players like Wayne Rooney and Kaka. This game was developed just for Android users.
As it turns out the Play isn’t the only Xperia smartphone that will be able to get the game during the exclusive periods Other Xperia devices can download the title as well including the Xperia arc S, Xperia arc, Xperia ray, Xperia neo, and the Xperia pro smartphones. The new game promises better gameplay, more depth, updated teams, a new replay system, and new stadium designs.

Sony Ericsson latest Xperia phones support WebGL

WebGL, a technology which allows compatible browsers to display interactive 3D graphics without the use of plugins has been around for awhile but not widely supported yet – especially when it comes to mobile devices. But seeing that open standards are the future of the web, it’s comes as no surprise that companies are doing their best to adopt them. Sony Ericsson has recently jumped on the bandwagon and announced that its 2011 Xperia phones now support WebGL thanks to the latest update that was released.

While Sony Ericsson claims to be the first mobile phone manufacturer to support WebGL for the Android web browser, it’s worth noting that Mozilla has already done it in the past with its Firefox for Android (though Mozilla isn’t a phone manufacturer). In fact even Nokia’s N900 and RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook support the standard as well. No word on when we’ll start seeing it on other devices, but it should be more popular now that Flash for mobile will be discontinued in the future. Check out a video demonstration of WebGL on an Xperia phone:

Sony Ericsson Italy Pegs March for Ice Cream Sandwich Updates

Sony Ericsson has already made the bold claim that all of their 2011 handsets will receive Android 4.0, but now they are among the first to assign a potential timeframe for the arrival of Ice Cream Sandwich. According to Maurizio de Palma, marketing manager for Sony Ericsson Italy, the Xperia line of phones will begin to see their ICS updates in March of next year. That is still a good four months away, and it would not come as a surprise for the date to be pushed back. Still, the news offers a hopeful outlook.
After catching much heat for the poor handling of earlier updates to their Android devices, Sony Ericsson has pledged to improve the process in nearly every way, from the timeliness of release to better communication with handset owners. Here is hoping that SE can deliver on time.

Sony Ericsson Says Goodbye to Sync Service, Suggests Google Sync as Alternative

As smartphone technology advances rapidly, many tools that worked well at one point have simply fallen to the wayside. Sony Ericsson’s Sync service is one such utility that seemed like a good idea when first launched, but has quickly fallen out of favor as better services have come along. With that in mind, SE has announced that it will shut down Sync as of December 29th, recommending instead that users transition to Google Sync. Also mentioned as possibly alternatives are Plaxo and UNYK. Sony Ericsson has some instructions on transitioning from one service to another over at their website, which should be a rather painless process. Any Sync users out there sad to see Sony Ericsson pull the plug?

Sony Ericsson Arc HD and more HD devices leaked in user agent profiles

We’ve heard rumors and even seen pictures of the next Sony Ericsson smartphone rocking a 1280 x 720p HD display but now we have a few more on the horizon. In a set of user agent profiles that were leaked we can now confirm the Arc HD (LT26i) will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread and has a 720p HD display just like the recently leaked photos suggested. Along with that we have a few more profiles also leaked.

The pictures can be seen below in the gallery for more details and if you’d like to view the UAProfiles yourself. Along with the Xperia Arc HD mentioned above another profile suggests Sony has a 720 x 1280 device in the works (LT28at) and a few more regular resolution 480 x 854 smartphones on the way too. According to the leaks these will all be running on ARM Cortex A8 processors and will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Sony has committed all current and future phones will be updated to ICS so that shouldn’t be a concern for too many users.

If the device listed above follows current Sony Ericsson trends it has a higher codename (LT28at) than the recently seen Arc HD (LT26i) so chances are we could be seeing another top end flagship phone from Sony coming soon. Sony recently bought out Ericsson’s half of the company but we haven’t heard anything else regarding that, maybe we’ll see a few SONY branded smartphones come early 2012 rocking Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. For more details and the rest of the leaked user profiles head to the source link at the via below.

Xperia arc S and Xperia neo V now available unlocked in the US

The latest in Sony’s maddening experiments in non-capitalization are now available in the United States. The Xperia arc S and Xperia neo V are available from Sony’s Ericsson’s online store, and should start popping up at various retailers next month. For the moment, each are only available in their unlocked and full-priced forms.

The Xperia arc S is an updated and expanded version of the original arc, with a 3.7-inch, 854 x 480 screen. The phone uses a speedy 1.4Ghz processor and 512MB of RAM, though unfortunately you’ll need a MicroSD card if you want more than the phone’s paltry 1GB of built-in memory. Connectivity options are impressive, with HDMA, DLNA and, USB host functionality (via the dock – not included). The camera is a full 8MP, with 72-p video recording at 30Mbps. The arc S costs $549.99 unlocked with AT&T HSPA+ bands.
The Xperia neo V (seriously, Sony, you’re killing me with this selective capitalization) uses the same 3.7-inch screen, but a slower 1Ghz processor. Elsewhere it has the same RAM and on-board storage specifications, though the camera is downgraded to a 5 megapixel model. The neo V gets a much lower price of $349.99.The phone will run on AT&T’s HSPA+ network.
Both phones run Android 2.3.4, just a few versions off of the latest available. It’s worth noting that Sony has said on multiple occasions that its current phones, including the arc S and neo V, would be receiving an Ice Cream sandwich update. The company did not mention when this update would be made available.

Sony Ericsson commits to Ice Cream Sandwich for all current phones

Following the flurry of excitement after the release of the official Ice Cream Sandwich source code yesterday, Sony Ericsson is assuring its customers that every Xperia phone made in 2011 will receive an official update. That includes the Xperia arc and arc S, Xperia PLAY, Xperia neo and neo V, Xperia mini and mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active, Xperia ray as well as Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman. Of course, not all models are available in all markets.

Sony didn’t give any timeframe on when to expect the updates, but for those who bought their phones on contract, remember that they’re largely contingent upon carriers’ cooperation – a particularly belligerent carrier might choose not to update their phone at all. Other major manufacturers are quoting between six weeks and four months for the first ICS updates, but given the unfortunately spotty history of Android rollouts, it may be quite a while longer before some see any new software. Sony’s reputation on the matter isn’t the best in the Android business, but it’s far from the worst – we’ll see how Sony’s proposed acquisition of Ericsson affects software development.
Sony joins the major Android manufacturers in reiterating to its customers that they’ll be seeing Ice Cream Sandwich at some point. HTC and Samsung have promised updates for those devices that can handle the increased system requirements, and Motorola said that phones running ICS would begin appearing just six weeks after the source code was released. (For the record, that’s right around New Years’s, Moto. Just sayin’.) If you’re brave and at least reasonable technical, community-authored ICS ROMS and mods should begin appearing this week, with more stable and reliable versions to follow.

Sony Ericsson Arc HD appears complete with dual-core chip

Sony Ericsson fans could be set to see the Arc range get its biggest spec bump yet with the Arc HD. The phone, which features Galaxy Nexus levels of power has made an appearance online.? That HD in the title relates to the Arc's screen, which was already a stunner. The new phone however is said to have a 1280 x 720 display at 320 dpi which measures in a 4.3 inches. Powering all this screen resolution is 1GB of RAM and a 1.5GHz processor. No ICS rumoured yet, but Sony Ericsson has told us (despite not confirming the existence of the Arc HD) that they will look into putting it onto devices as soon as Google gives it to them. Unlike the Xperia Arc S, there is a slight handset redesign with the Arc HD. On the back is a set of glowing LED lights and a similar set on the front. The edges of the phone are also much more rounded and the display has a large black bezel around it.? Front facing and rear facing cameras are also included, but we don't have any information on what sort of resolution its shooting at. We hope Sony puts that Exmor R tech that it incorporated into previous Arc cameras, and given the HD moniker, that video is shot at 1080p. We will keep you posted on the Arc HD as we have more.?
