If you’re not into the whole “smartphone” scene but still want a media player with more brains than you can shake an iPod Touch at, you’re in luck (at least if you live in the United Kingdom). Samsung has officially announced the new Galaxy Wi-Fi in that market, an Android-based PMP cousin to the Galaxy line of phones and tablets. A 5-inch version is on sale now, while a smaller 3.65-inch version will make its way to retailers soon.
Both devices feature a 1GHz processor, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, access to the Android Market and Wifi b/g/n radios. Naturally they support more codecs than standard Android phones, with MPEG4, H.263, H.264, WMV and DivX video and MP3, WMA, WAV, OGG, ACC, FLAC audio playback built-in. According to Samsung, the Galaxy Wi-Fi can handle 720p playback at 30 frames per second. Bluetooth 3.0, an accelerometer and a remote control feature for Samsung Smart TVs round out their spec list. Disappointingly, both 800 x 480 screens are LCD panels, not AMOLED.
The 5-inch version has a 3.2 megapixel camera while the 3.65inch version uses a 2-megapixel shooter. Both devices have a standard VGA front camera for video chatting. The larger brother gets an impressive 2500 mAh battery while the smaller has to settle for a more typical 1500 mAh version. UK residents can pick up the Samsung Galaxy Wi-Fi 5-inch now for £199 and £219 in 8 and 16 gigabytes, respectively. The 3.65-inch version will be £149 and £169, and you can get either in black or white. Currently there are no details for a United States release of the new models.

A couple of UK retailers want you to know that they’re now shipping the HTC Sensation XE HTC’s first Beats Audio smartphone. The device is a 4.3 inch qHD beaut with a 1.5GHz processor, 768MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, an 8 megapixel 1080p HD rear camera with dual LED flash, a VGA front camera and a 1730 mAh battery.
We’ve got two retailers offering the phone. Clove UK has it for £492.00 including VAT while Smartphone Centre has it a tad cheaper at £479.95 inc VAT & delivery. While we’re not yet sure how much value Beats technology adds to HTC smartphones, it’s still an interesting device to behold and one to consider amongst many from the OEM. Let us know if you’re taking a good, hard look at this device.

Samsung Galaxy Note coming to the UK November 17th

The much-anticipated smartphone/tablet hybrid Samsung Galaxy Note is coming in a lot faster than we expected. In a press release Samsung announced that the Galaxy Note is headed for the white cliffs of Dover on November 17th, just ten weeks after the device’s premiere at IFA in Berlin. The phone will be available at retailers across the UK and Ireland.
The Samsung Galaxy Note is a flagship device with a huge 5.3-inch, 1280 x 800 screen using Samsung’s Super AMOLED technology. Naturally the phone has a 1.4GHz dual-core processor and the latest 4G radios. One of the most interesting features is a capacitive stylus with its own on-device storage bay. Coupled with Samsung’s drawing/note apps, this is a throwback to the pen input days before capacitive screens became the norm. Both 16Gb and 32Gb versions will be available with MicroSD card expansion slots. A standard 8-megapixel camera adorns the back with a front-facing cam for video conferencing. Samsung has listed in its product sheet that some models will feature NFC chips, but has not specified which markets will get these versions.
US Samsung fans got an exciting indication that the Galaxy Note is headed their way on Friday, when the FCC posted its initial rundown of the phone with AT&T radio bands. Though no official announcement has been made, it’s quite likely that the device is headed to America soon. You’ll be happy to know that the Galaxy Note runs the latest smartphone version of Android (as of now), 2.3 Gingerbread.
Check out our hands-on look at the Samsung Galaxy Note below:

O2 UK to get HTC Rhyme on October 17

I just mentioned the new smartphone that has launched from HTC called the HTC Rhyme. The smartphone is aimed at women wanting a cute smartphone more than the hardcore Android user looking for power. The Rhyme does come with some nice accessories though. If the Rhyme tickled your fancy and you are in the UK, O2 has announced that it will be getting the smartphone starting on October 17. That launch date isn’t too far away.
O2 will be the exclusive UK carrier for the smartphone packing HTC Sense and Gingerbread. We already ran down the features of the Rhyme today, but if you missed that other post, I will run them down here again. The O2 version will be purple and have the same accessories as the Verizon US version. The accessories include the light-up charm that shows at a glance if there are messages or calls.
The phone also comes with a dock, workout armband for holding the phone, headphones, and a Bluetooth headset. Surprisingly, the armband isn’t purple nor is the dock as you might think all the accessories would be. The phone also has Bluetooth, a 3.7-inch WVGA screen, a 5MP rear camera with flash and a VGA front camera. The phone is expected to be free on a contract.

The HTC Sensation and Sensation XE smartphones have so far been offered in black only. Geeks like to have a choice when they are buying a new smartphone so HTC has a white version of both the original HTC Sensation and the Sensation XE coming in a few weeks. The new color devices are pegged for launch on October 1 according to UK phone seller Phones4u.
That Sensation XE smartphone has only surfaced this week and looks to be a very nice device indeed. The Beats Audio tech and the included Beats headphones will make it a superior music phone. The XE also has a faster 1.5GHz processor compared to the 1.2GHz part in the original Sensation. HTC also has some new Windows Phones coming as well.
According to Phones4u, the Sensation XE in black or white will be free on £36 or more 2-year agreements. The normal white Sensation will be free on plans at £31 monthly or higher. If you don’t want a contract that Sensation XE will cost you a much heavier price at £489.95 according to retailer MobileFun and the date it lands is listed as October 7.

Data analyst ComScore has released some new facts & figures covering the European smartphone scene, breaking down Android sales by hardware maker. It shows that in terms of Android use, HTC has an astonishing grip of the UK, with 51% of all Android users in the country owning an HTC device. Big win, that.
ComScore says a total of 6.3m people in the UK now use an Android phone, with 4.5m Android users in France and 4m in Germany. Here’s the Android manufacturer breakdown across five key EU territories:
Samsung owns France, though. Good to see the resurgent Sony Ericsson making up some ground with its ace 2011 models, too. You can read the full ComScore report into the current state of the European mobile scene here.

Only 5.9% people in U.K have Samsung Tabs Reports Says

Hot new analyst in town Kantar Worldpanel has just issued some data regarding UK Android tablet sales, claiming that Apple’s iPad is, unsurprisingly, the dominant force by a long, long way. Kantar says iPad has “almost three quarters” of the UK tablet market, with the best-selling Android model being the original Samsung Galaxy Tab – down on 5.9%.
The good news in general tablet terms is that 3.6million people in the UK now own a tablet of some sort. Albeit mostly iPads. But there’s potential.
Kantar also says that in November of 2010 only 2.8% of the UK population owned a tablet – that’s now up to 7.6% of everyone in the country. Link via the FT. You may need to register to read it.

Amazon’s ‘Click & Collect’ service is coming to the UK

You’ve all used Amazon before, whether it’s to buy a brand new book, a rare DVD or a batch of last-minute birthday presents for a loved-one. But the thing is, any item bigger than a book or a DVD tends not to fit through a standard letterbox, so the hassle of being at home to let the postman in often means a trip into town is the only sure-fire way of receiving an item in good time.
But this could be a thing of the past, as the e-commerce giant is looking to set up a Click & Collect scheme, which are essentially lockers in shopping centres where you can collect your purchases in person.
As SlashGear reports, you decide which locker location it’s delivered to, whether that’s near your work or somewhere on the journey home, and you’ll receive a unique access code which allows you to collect your goods. That surely must be more convenient than queuing at your local mail depot on the other side of town which closes at 6pm?
It seems that Amazon has partnered with Land Securities, owners of a range of shopping centres around the UK, and the first Click & Collect lockers could be unveiled as early as next week.
This move follows hot on the heels of a very similar initiative in the US, where Amazon customers can collect their goods from 7-Eleven stores. It’s thought that the scheme is to be tested at some Seattle stores imminently.
What do you think? Is this a good idea? Leave your comments below.

The Radar will have a smaller 3.8″ display, a 1GHz processor, a 5-megapixel rear camera, a VGA front facing camera, 512MB of RAM, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS as well. ChaCha brings its text-based mobile Q&A service to the UK

ChaCha, the US-based Q&A service for mobile phones, has today announced it’s launching in the UK.
This means that if you’re looking for an answer to any question, including phone numbers, addresses, trivia and any other tidbit, you can text 85852 and receive a human-generated personalized response.
As you may already know, the UK already has similar text-based Q&A services such as 63336, which was launched initially as Any Question Answered (AQA) back in April 2004. Where ChaCha is striving to differentiate itself is that it will charge standard network text rates as opposed to the premium rates that services such as 63336 charge, which can be as much as £1.50. So this means if you have an unlimited text bundle, the service is essentially free.
ChaCha launched initially in Indiana, USA, in 2006. It was originally intended as a human-guided, browser-based search engine, but phased this service out in favour of its SMS-based service in 2008. To date, over 1.7 billion questions have been answered in the US, at a rate of 3 million per day. The service combines its technology with more than 60,000 human “Guides” – home-based workers. In preparation for its UK launch, ChaCha has been recruiting UK-based guides.
In launching the service in the UK, ChaCha will be continuing its partnership with global mobile transaction hub OpenMarket, with which it has offered its text-based Q&A service in the US. Alex Moir, OpenMarket UK and EU General Manager, said:
“The viral growth and mass appeal ChaCha has achieved in the US market has been phenomenal to witness. OpenMarket is proud to be ChaCha’s strategic partner as they introduce their exceptional service to UK mobile subscribers, and looks forward to supporting ChaCha as they continue to expand to new markets across the globe.”ChaCha was created by Scott A. Jones, a technology entrepreneur who co-founded a voicemail technology company in the 1980s, as well as Gracenote, the music recognition and discovery platform. Jones said:
“The UK is known for its very clever and active mobile population, and the ChaCha team is anxious to show this new audience why we’ve become the world’s #1 real-time mobile Q&A service. Our unique blend of technology and human intelligence has allowed ChaCha to construct a one-of-a-kind system for answering natural language questions very quickly and cost-effectively without sacrificing quality. Launching in the UK is an exciting and important milestone in achieving ChaCha’s long-term plans for broad global expansion.”ChaCha’s Q&A service can be accessed by texting 85852, and it should work on most feature phones and smartphones on all the major networks.

That white version of Samsung's Galaxy S II flagship smartphone that we expected to arrive on September 1 is now available to purchase from Vodafone UK. It may be a few days late, but that hasn't stopped the white version from looking as dapper as ever. Fashionably late, right? Interested buyers can pick it up for free with a new two-year contract and a monthly plan of 36 GBP or greater.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 up for sale at Vodafone UK

IT appears that one of the only carriers in the entirety of Europe to get their Galaxy Tab 10.1 shipment before the massive Euro ban of the tablet, Vodafone UK, has now got their stock up for sale, thanks to the courts suspension of said ruling outside of Germany. This device of course is also for sale in some other bits of the world including the USA and Australia, but has certainly suffered some losses in potential sales due to the court ruling. Meanwhile the rest of the UK is more than likely awaiting shipment of their Tabs so that sales may resume across the English side of the ocean.
In related news, we’re still reeling over the complete disappearance of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 from IFA 2011 as another court case appeared like a wild Snorlax. The folks at Samsung are truly going to need to get their Pokeflute out to move this wild beast from their path soon or they’ll take what can only be described as a Charizard-sized hit in sales in Deutschland.
Also meanwhile, you can check out some app reviews we’ve got on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 right here in the USA as well, including Cranky Cat and Cat Dance Club LWP, the racing game Reckless Getaway, everyone’s favorite Google Reader, water intensive Sprinkle, airplanes ahoy with SteamBirds, and of course all your favorite feeds with News360.
And of course you could check out our review of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE from Verizon as well, complete with TouchWiz UX straight outta the developer halls of Samsung.

Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone in white lands in UK today
9:48 PM

Samsung has announced that the Galaxy S II smartphone is hitting the UK today in white. The smartphone will be offered at major retailers starting today, August 31, 2011. The white smartphone is exactly like the original Galaxy S II on the inside, the color is the only difference. This week we had reported that the smartphone would land on September 1, so the device is a day earlier than we though.
So far, Samsung has moved 5 million Galaxy S II smartphones globally since launch, so this is one of the most popular Android smartphones around. Other than the color the hardware inside is the same. The phone is 8.49mm thick and weighs in at 116g. It runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and has a 1.2GHz dual-core processor inside.
The rear camera is an 8MP unit with AF and LED flash and the front camera is 2MP. The phone can record 1080p video and is DLNA capable. It has Bluetooth 3.0 inside and WiFi with 16GB of storage and a microSD card for expansion. The phone should sell for the same price as the current version.

Looking for a decent upgrade to the original Motorola Defy? Well, the Motorola Defy+ is already on your radar. But if you’re in the UK and were wondering when you’d be able to go out and snap one up, Motorola has today confirmed that the device will be available at select UK carriers and retailers starting sometime next month.
You’re getting a 1GHz processor, 2GB of internal storage, a 2GB microSD card (with up to 32GB cards supported) and a 5 megapixel camera beneath the armor that shields it – this thing is dust and water resistant (the original could be submerged in water and would still function as normal). Android 2.3 will be preinstalled with Motorola’s custom UI on top.
You’re also getting a 3.7 inch display with Corning Gorilla Glass protecting it, meaning it’ll be scratch resistant and should be more (but not completely) resistant to glass shattering due to deep falls.

It seems Google’s finally ready to get over this Google TV hump as Eric Schmidt is rumored to be announcing the service (and hopefully some hardware partners) for a UK launch within six months. Google TV’s launch here in the US hasn’t exactly been an easy one for Google.
It looked promising from the start, but a lack of support from television networks and applications (namely ones from the Android market) seemed to keep consumers at bay when considering units at retail. With Honeycomb/Ice Cream Sandwich coming, it should appeal to a lot more people one they see all the great things they’re enabled to do.
Internet TVs are great, and with the flexibility Google TV provides for OEMs, there’s a lot of excitement for it. Instead of an OEM having to deliver and maintain their own apps, Google TV provides a pool of developer-created apps and content, meaning the possibilities for OEMs’ users are almost endless. That’s an important factor when it comes down to marketing.
It seems Google’s happy with where Google TV is going and will be making a very big push, and that will especially be evident if a forthcoming announcement is indeed set to go down. Any of you UK folks jumping in once Google brings Google TV to your shores? [Daily Mail via EuroDroid]

HTC Sensation 2.3.4 update now available on Vodafone UK

Good news for those of you who grabbed the HTC Sensation through Vodafone UK. The Big Red carrier has released a small firmware update for HTC’s baby to address several performance and stability issues. More precisely, the new software brings stability and performance updates, reduces heating in some scenarios by optimizing processor load, and improves browser performance.
To see if the new software version is available for your Sensation, hit “Settings,” scroll down to “About phone,” tap “System software updates,” and then “Check now.” Hit update and wait for several minutes for the update to complete. Make sure your battery is fully charged and that you’re in a fast Wi-Fi hotspot to make the download faster. If that’s on place – you’re ready to go. Good luck!
And before I let you go, I must remind you to backup the data. Yeah I know I’m getting repetitive with this – but trust me, this is how it should be done, with all of your data stored locally just in case something goes wrong…

HTC has been around for a long time and the company makes some of the most popular smartphones on the market today. It also makes smartphones with other OS’ as well. From time to time HTC has events all around the world and invites geeks to come and check out what it has to offer. At times, these events are press only, but sometimes HTC invites anyone that wants to come to check things out.
HTC has announced on its UK Facebook page that it will be having another user event where anyone can come by and check out what HTC has to offer. The user event will be on September 1 from 6:30 to 11:00 pm in London. HTC does point out that you have to RSVP and the event is first come, first serve with limited space. I suspect it will fill up fast, not only because there may be new hardware there to check out either.
There will also be free food and drinks so you can bet it will fill up fast. The event is open only to those 18 and over. What do you think? Will HTC have some new devices at the event to get consumer opinions on new products or is this something else just for fun and marketing? I am betting there will be some new devices on hand and perhaps we will get a bit of a tease ahead of the event.

Andrew Mitchinson, Huawei’s UK Boss, said in a conversation with Bloomberg that the Blaze could arrive in the UK as soon as next month. Distribution wise, Bloomberg said the likes of Vodafone and O2 could be on board, but the reference could have been to other Huawei devices like the recently revealed Huawei Vision.
The Blaze features a 3.2″ screen, 3.2 megapixel camera, a front-facing camera, and Android 2.3. While those numbers may not sound that impressive, the price of the phone may be.
According to Bloomberg’s analyst friends, the Blaze could cost as little as £100 ($162.69) when it is launched. If the specifications and price don’t change prior to its UK arrival, the Blaze could be a solid addition at the budget end of the Android phone ranges.
