Asus Eee Pad Slider official page breaks cover

We have talked several times about the cool Asus Eee Pad Slider. This cool little tablet has the sliding screen that pops up and tilts to let you type on an integrated keyboard. The little keys of the keyboard are the chiclet style that Asus uses on the Eee netbooks. The cool tablet is expected to land in most countries this September, which isn’t too far away at all now. The official page for the tablet has now been added to the Asus website.

With the tablet having crossed the FCC not long ago the official page is one of the last steps before you can go and buy the cool tablet. There are expected to be two versions of the tablet with all the same features and the only difference being the amount of storage. The 32GB tablet will sell for $550 in the US with the 16GB versions going for $400. The official page offers all the hardware specs too, though most of the details are known.
The tablet will use a 10.1-inch LED backlit screen with 1280 x 800 resolution and support for ten touch contacts at once. The processor is the NVIDIA Tegra 2 and the tablet has 1GB of memory. It will have WiFi and Bluetooth inside along with a 5MP rear camera and a 1.2MP front camera. A microSD card slot allows storage expansion. The machine also has a G-sensor, light sensor, gyro, and digital compass. The tablet runs the Android 3.1 OS.

BlackBerry Bold 9900 vs HTC ChaCha

RIM’s BlackBerry Bold 9900 takes on HTC’s ChaCha

We see how well HTC’s ChaCha competes against BlackBerry’s latest Bold 9900.
Form:
We just can’t think of anything nice to say about the HTC ChaCha’s visuals. It’s difficult to imagine what HTC’s design department was thinking to be honest.
It’s got a peculiar design - the lower part of the phone, where the fixed Qwerty keyboard is housed, juts forward at a funny angle from the upper part, where the screen sits.
The result is this oddly broken profile which reminds us of those dedicated, battery driven handheld games devices you used to be able to buy from Woolworths, back when it existed.
The BlackBerry Bold 9900 looks more or less like a conventional BlackBerry handset with its smallish screen, fixed Qwerty keyboard and broad yet smooth appearance.
With the BlackBerry the keys are more squared-off and chiselled and they’re arranged in a compact way which looks appealing.
Conversely on the ChaCha the keys are rounded and spaced out giving off a cartoonish vibe which doesn’t sit well with us.
We have to say the BlackBerry is a much more attractive handset than the ChaCha.
Winner – BlackBerry Bold 9900
Display:
‘Messenger’ style phones usually have touchscreens on the smaller side and these two are no exception, RIM’s BlackBerry Bold has the larger choice here at 2.8-inches while the HTC ChaCha’s is 2.6-inches.
They’re both TFT capacitive displays, the ChaCha clocks in at a 480x320 resolution and a pixel density of 221 pixels-per-inch (ppi).
The BlackBerry’s vital statistics are higher at 640x480 pixels and 285ppi respectively.
HTC’s device uses Gorilla Glass for its screen and is preloaded with the HTC Sense 2.1 user interface (UI).
Both handsets feature accelerometer sensors and multi-touch input, the BlackBerry Bold also has an optical track-pad.
The BlackBerry’s larger screen with a higher resolution and pixel density means it will give better picture quality and be more visible too.
Winner – BlackBerry Bold 9900
Storage:
RIM has upped the stakes with the storage crammed into this BlackBerry, a comparatively hefty 8GB of internal capacity is on offer, along with 768MB of RAM.
The HTC ChaCha doesn’t do so well here with only 512MB of RAM and 512MB of ROM built in.
That’s not going to cater much to any serious storage needs and, against the BlackBerry, seems like quite a paltry provision.
External support on each allows Micro SD cards up to 32GB, the ChaCha includes a 2GB card as part of the package.
You’re going to be pretty much relying on SD card storage with the ChaCha.
An easy win for the BlackBerry this round.
Winner – BlackBerry Bold 9900
Processor:
Like many similar handsets in this category the HTC ChaCha is a moderately well powered device equipped with a single core Qualcomm MSM7227 processor clocked at 800 MHz.
The BlackBerry Bold, however, has decided to get a little more adventurous, it’s still single core, but at 1.2GHz this Qualcomm 8655 processor on the Snapdragon chipset can deliver the goods in double quick time.
An Adreno 205 graphics processing unit (GPU) also helps move things along at a steady pace.
The BlackBerry easily outpaces the HTC ChaCha on processor performance making it our choice here.
Winner – BlackBerry Bold 9900
Operating System:
The new Bold runs, as might be expected, RIM’s own BlackBerry OS 7, while HTC’s ChaCha uses Google’s prolific Android Gingerbread 2.3.
RIM has consistently been improving system performance on its system and version 7 is as quick as it’s been so far.
Whether you’re running single apps, multi-tasking or browsing you’ve got a fast and responsive setup here.
The browser specifically has been updated with a specially tailored Javascript compiler, complete with Flash support. There’s also some additional new functionality with pinch zoom and a voice activated search feature.
Near Field Communication is starting to get more attention and RIM has been quick to get in on the game by enabling support on the Bold.
Possible applications include paying for your shopping with a swipe of your phone across a sensor or quickly exchanging information between devices simply by “bumping” them together.
Another area of hardware support newly included in this build is a capability for HD video capture. Considering the Bold can capture video in 720p HD this is a very timely and thoughtful addition.
The BlackBerry Balance suite is a new feature designed to allow business users to keep their work and private lives separated, while remaining easily accessible.
Android 2.3 Gingerbread is about to be replaced with Android Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0), but for a more low-key messenger phone it’s still more than adequate.
Multi-tasking is where Android excels and Gingerbread particularly with its improved performance and advanced management suite.
On Gingerbread you have a much greater degree of control over your apps than in previous builds, as well as much more information on what they’re up to.
The interface has been refined and is much smoother to navigate. You’ve also got an updated version of Android’s touch keyboard which, unlike previous versions, is very responsive and easy to use.
Both systems are very rewarding to use with some great features and good performance. We’re calling this one a draw.
Winner - Draw
Camera:
Both phones are fitted with 5-megapixel primaries at 2592x1944 pixels resolution.
They also each have autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging and face detection features.
Additionally the BlackBerry comes with digital zoom, image stabilisation and editing effects.
The ChaCha captures video at D1 quality and supports video calling, it also sports a secondary VGA camera.
The BlackBerry enjoys 720p HD video capture but has no secondary camera.
Overall the BlackBerry has more features and captures video at a better quality.
Winner – BlackBerry Bold 9900
Final Thoughts:
Well, the ChaCha got thrashed by the BlackBerry Bold 9900, pure and simple.
RIM’s new generation Bold performs considerably better in virtually all areas, only drawing on the operating system because Android Gingerbread is pretty good, howeve, it’s not enough to save HTC’s challenge

HTC Holiday Prototype Unit Leaked

What we’re looking at here is very possibly an early tester version of the HTC Holiday, a device with a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, a 4.5-inch qHD display at 960 x 540 pixel resolution and a very possible AT&T release sometime inside 2011. This device has a giant “CALIFORNIA” sitting at the bottom on the back, this pointing toward a possible regional-case situation OR just a rather ugly sticker on this copy of the device. Last time we heard about this device, it was back this past May and several specs were released then – this new set of photos confirming several of the specs leaked then.

This device, if we can believe what we’ve heard leaked thus far, will have the same 1.2GHz MSM8660 processor that we’re currently seeing in the HTC Sensation. Also we can expect the HTC Holiday to have 1GB of RAM, an 8 megapixel camera on the back and a 1.3 megapixel camera on the front. The unit we’re seeing here was supposedly purchased from Craigslist by an XDA Developer and photos were taken immediately after shipment. Unfortunately the display was busted up, but we can expect a fully in-tact screen when we get an official release.

What’s most interesting about this device is what appears to be a conductive set of hardware bits on the back, this leading us to believe that we’ll be getting a unique charger with the device. We’re imagining something like a stand that’ll plug into the wall where we can simply set the Holiday and let it charge without having to take the extra step in actually plugging it in. All smartphones should do such a thing, wouldn’t you agree?

This will only be the second 4.5-inch smartphone on the market, sitting right alongside the Samsung Infuse 4G in the AT&T store soon. Thusly AT&T will continue to hold the entire 4.5-inch smartphone market and will destroy all newcomers into the future!

HTC EVO 4G Gingerbread gets Rooted along with many other new HTC phones

If you were one of the many people that accepted the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for your HTC EVO 4G and have been waiting for a easy way to root your phone then I have good news. Thanks to AlpharevX and @Unrevoked you can now easily and quickly root your EVO 4G, EVO 3D, Sensation, the new myTouch 4G Slide, and a slew of other HTC devices thanks to their new tool Revolutionary.

These are the developers behind the S-OFF and root tool used on the HTC Sensation 4G and EVO 3D for those that didn’t want to wait for HTC to allow us the same privilege. Today they just released the latest version of the tool they call “Revolutionary” that we all can use to easily root our favorite phones.
While they are still calling Revolutionary a “developer preview” it is highly functional and I was able to root the deeply locked down HTC Sensation 4G is like 3 minutes using their awesome system and it really couldn’t be easier. As always this will void your warranty and if you are unsure of what you are about to do, you should probably ask a few questions on Twitter or over at XDA just to be safe.
Here is a list of compatible devices and the list just keeps getting longer so don’t worry if your device isn’t supported yet. The Latest version of Revolution is called 0.4pre3 and you’ll be glad to know you can root your EVO 4G that has the latest 2.3 Gingerbread OTA and more. Head over to the official page via the source link below for all the details and instructions you need.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is $70 cheaper at Newegg until 8/31

Everyone loves to save a few extra dollars where they can right? Over at one of my favorite online stores Newegg.com, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has a little $70 dollar savings attached to it. While this isn’t actually $70 off they are offering a free gift card worth $70 dollars with the purchase of the tablet. Although you still pay full price you’ll have a gift card to buy accessories, cases, or anything computer related as Newegg sales a ton of great stuff at exceptional prices.

After looking a bit closer it appears Newegg is offering savings on all Samsung tablets and they have the same sort of deal for both the original 7″ Galaxy Tab, as well as the Tab 10.1 16GB version. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is one of, if not the best Android tablet currently being offered.

It is super sleek, thin, and extremely lightweight and recently has become my favorite tablet hands down. Again this deal is only available at newegg.com and buyers will get a $70 gift card with the purchase of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 32GB version, or a $60 dollar card with the 16GB flavor. These deals wont last for long so head over to newegg at the source link below for more details.

ASUS Padfone Caught on Video, May Ship with Ice Cream Sandwich

Earlier this year back in May we heard ASUS had something special in the works and later the press photos were leaked of what they are calling the ASUS Padfone. According to Alex Sun, head of their Personal Mobile Device Department, the Padfone will in fact be launching with Android 2.4 (or 4.0) Ice Cream Sandwich.

Ice Cream Sandwich as we all know should be unifying current versions of Android into one tasty “Sandwich” and this would be the ideal operating system for the ASUS Padfone. What we have in case you’ve forgot is a 10.1″ Android tablet but with a compartment on the rear that will house the brain of the tablet, and that will be a powerful dual-core ASUS Smartphone. We’ve seen it before but this picture below might help a few readers out.

According to our sources there was also some small talk regarding a few exciting things. Those were that we should see the Padfone around October/November, possible a 3D version, as well as offering a 4G LTE Padfone coming early 2012. While we haven’t seen much promise from the smartphone department at ASUS, the Transformer tablet quickly became a front runner in the Android tablet market and is still selling like hot cakes and hard to keep on the shelves so we are all excited to see what they bring next to the table.
While this video might not be all that new, A lot of readers most likely haven’t seen it and it details just what we can expect to see with the upcoming ASUS Padfone in the coming months.

Acer Iconia A500 3.2 Honeycomb OTA Update expected around August 25th

While many tablets have already seen the update to Android 3.2 Honeycomb like the Motorola Xoom and the ASUS Transformer we haven’t heard anything regarding the Acer A500 Tablet. It was updated to Android 3.1 back in July but appears to be a little late to the 3.2 party. Users wont need to wait much longer because we may see the update in August.

Don’t feel that bad though Acer Fans, the G-Slate only received 3.1 like this week so you guys are still looking pretty good for current and future updates. The Iconia A500 should see 3.2 start rolling out on August 25 according to the Acer Malaysia Facebook page, and while Acer hasn’t mentioned anything regarding the US update this is a good sign that it is coming.
Do take note that the original update was penciled in for August 10th but that never happened obviously. Hopefully this 2-3 week delay will help Acer get everything dialed in and we may even see other regions begin the update around the same date. With the OTA getting closer to rolling out we should be hearing from Acer regarding the US update any day now so be sure to check back often.

Pantech Apache with Verizon LTE Listed By FCC

The Pantech ADR8995 has surfaced at the FCC with the ID: JYCAPACHE. We can conclude that the LTE band 13 and CDMA listed in their reports will belong to Verizon, which currently uses these band combinations. Wifi certification? Check. Plus, its Bluetooth certification identifies it as an Android device with North American availability. No real certainty of whether or not it will closely follow the release of the Droid Bionic or arrive as a 4G device with Verizon anytime soon, but it’s worth keeping an eye on.

AT&T: Samsung Infuse 4G to get Gingerbread 2.3 this month

According to AT&T via their official Twitter account, the Samsung Infuse 4G will be receiving the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update at some point this month.
AT&T announced in July that all of its phones that were released in 2011 will be receiving an update to 2.3.x. The Samsung Infuse 4G will join the HTC Inspire 4G, LG Phoenix, Motorola ATRIX, Pantech Crossover and the Samsung Captivate as the AT&T models that have already received, or will soon be receiving, the Android OS update.
