WhatsApp is testing Preview for Shared Documents

Do you ever download a picture or video on WhatsApp and later realize it was a waste of time? Or have too many files on your phone that you have to delete frequently? Well, the case may change as WhatsApp is testing a feature that allows taking a preview of shared documents.

As the name suggests, the preview will give you a glimpse of what’s inside the document before downloading it. In the current stable version, you have to download the file to see the image, video, PDF, or document. The app only shows a generic preview with the file's name, type, and size.

With the new update, users can see a richer preview with a thumbnail that will determine what's inside the file. This will make it easier to decide whether or not to download it. The feature is rolling out to Android users of WhatsApp beta with version 2.22.5.11 or newer. You can refer to the image below to see how does the feature look.

As you might have noticed, the previews shown are of low quality. However, this will improve as the feature is still in the evolving stage. Also, as of now, they are shown on top of the file, but that could change in future developments as well. The feature will eventually roll out to the general public in a few weeks or maybe a few months.
