Xperia Play 4G heads to AT&T September 18

If AT&T is the network you prefer and you have been waiting for a cool Android phone to land the good news is that the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 4G will be coming to AT&T soon. By soon we mean September 18 and the smartphone will be very cheap with a 2-year contract at only $49.99. I am sure they will sell a bunch of the devices at that price. The Xperia 4G is the PlayStation smartphone that we have covered extensively in the past.

On AT&T, the phone will not be working on a real 4G network like LTE; it will operate on the HSPA+. The smartphone will come in an exclusive stealth blue color and inside the package will be pair of bonus accessories. Those accessories are the multimedia dock DK300 and the MC100 music cable. That docking station turns the screen of the smartphone into a large clock and the music cable allows connection to external speakers.
The smartphone will also come with a bunch of free and cool games. The free game package includes Dungeon Defenders Second Wave, Asphalt 6 Adrenaline, Star Battalion, Madden NFL 11, The Sims 3, Tower Bloxx, and Crash Bandicoot. That hardware side is the same we are used to with a 1GHz CPU, Adreno 205 GPU, Android 2.3.3, and the 4-inch 480 x 854 resolution screen with 60fps graphics. The rear camera is 5MP with a VGA front camera. What do you think, will this phone sell well on AT&T?

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S Coming this September

Early last week Sony Ericsson announced the new Xperia Arc S which will be the successor to the original Arc (obviously) and now we have some official pricing and a release date. The Arc S is a beautifully thin SE Android smartphone and we should now see it hit the streets in the UK and other markets near the end of September.

The Xperia Arc S will be Sony’s new flagship offering and comes with some impressive specs. The Arc S will feature a 4.2″ LED screen with Sony’s “Reality Display” and Bravia Engine technology. Boosted with a 1.4 Ghz Snapdragon processor, 8.1 MP camera as well as what Sony is calling 3D and 2D sweep panorama photography. The processor while still single-core is cranked to 1.4 Ghz vs the 1.0 on the previous model.

According to Clove Blog the SE Xperia Arc S will start shipping on September 26th and will come in both a white and midnight blue color option. The Arc S will come with Android 2.3 Gingerbread as well and should hit the market for around £350 or $560 US dollars. For now this is a UK launch but should hit other regions shortly.

Acer W4 vs Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S

We compare the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S with a rumoured Windows Phone 7 Mango known as the Acer W4

As we near the release of Windows Phone 7's Mango update, interest in the platform is rightfully increasing. Many people are keen to see exactly what the operating system has matured into and one device which looks set to show-off the update's capabilities is Acer's Mango powered Acer W4.
In the interest of impartiality we've chosen to pitch the Acer W4 against a little Android competition in the shape of Sony Ericsson's up and coming Xperia Arc S – a device that is looking to build on the solid reputation of its predecessor.
We're operating within the confines of speculation again this week, folks, so do remember that what we're discussing isn't the finished, or even confirmed, article.

Power
If the rumours circulating can be trusted we can expect the Acer W4 to launch with a 1GHz Qualcomm CPU and at least 512MB RAM which, although sufficient for most tasks, isn't going to set the world alight in a market that is anxiously awaiting its first quad-core powered smartphones.
The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S has a little bit more muscle though, with a 1.4GHz Scorpion CPU, Adreno 205 GPU and 512MB RAM, giving it victory in this opening round.
Winner - Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S

Display
Acer's W4 looks set to include a 3.6-inch WVGA  touchscreen, which will operate at a resolution of 480 x 800 and offer a fairly impressive pixel density of 259ppi.
Sony Ericsson's Xperia Arc S features a 4.2-inch LED-backlit LCD screen that operates at a resolution of 480 x 854 and offers a pixel density of 233ppi, making it a decent choice for those that enjoy watching movies or TV shows on their device.
There's plenty to be said for high quality, smaller screens though and we think people will appreciate the Acer W4 irrespective of it lacking a few millimetres in the screen department.

Winner - Draw

Camera
The Xperia Arc S offers an 8-megapixel primary camera with auto-focus, LED flash, face & smile detection, 3D sweep panorama and Geo-tagging, making it a pretty well rounded package for those that snap a lot of photos on the go.
The device will also feature a secondary, front-facing camera, though we aren't sure what size yet.
The Acer W4 looks set to be outfitted with the bare minimum required of Windows Phone 7 devices, which, of course, is a 5-megapixel sensor with autofocus and LED flash.
There's no word yet on what other camera functionality the device will have, or whether it will feature a secondary video-call camera.
Winner - Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S

Operating System
Sony Ericsson's Xperia Arc S will ship with version 2.3.4 of Google's Android OS, otherwise known as Gingerbread – a pretty well rounded, stable and secure release of the software.
Users can also expect to find Sony Ericsson's own TimeScape UI included too, which brings custom widgets, apps and social networking integration along with a neat timeline driven user interface.

Acer's W4 will launch with the newest iteration of Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform, which brings a lot of new features to the platform, such as a new unified inbox for all communications, new and improved multi-tasking and Internet Explorer 9.
Naturally both platforms offer tons of apps and games for download, but Windows Phone 7 has a way to go before it catches up with Android in this respect, giving the Xperia Arc S the edge.
Winner - Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S

Form & Build
There's no word on dimensions for the Acer W4 yet, but we're expecting a device that doesn't deviate terribly from the path set by previous Windows Phone 7 devices.
In terms of materials we're expecting lightweight plastics and a decent build quality, but again it doesn't look anything special.
The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S measures up at 125 x 63 x 8.7 mm and weighs a modest 117g, making it a fairly pocket-friendly smartphone.
We hope Sony Ericsson has put a little bit more effort into the build quality of the Arc S though, as its predecessor exuded a pound-shop feel which belied the device's underlying quality.
Winner - Draw
And there you have it. A pretty resounding victory for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S.
The device looks to be a solid addition to the Xperia stable, and a decent upgrade on the previous device. The improved power on offer will make the lag that afflicted the original Arc a thing of the past.
Thankfully the specs for the Acer W4 aren't written in stone. We might see a device that has been nipped, tweaked and updated by the time it reaches market, and we hope that this is the case.
As it stands though, the Acer W4 is a device that looks dated by today's standards and has little of note under the bonnet.
Unless Acer is planning to price the device very aggressively we can't see it making much of a splash.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S Announced, 1.4 Ghz CPU and 4.2″ Display

The news is already starting to pour out of IFA and Sony Ericsson has just announced their new flagship Android offering, the Xperia Arc S. We can expect to see this new flagship phone debut this October and while the details are still pouring in we do have some pretty impressive hardware specs for you after the break.

The Xperia Arc S will feature a 4.2″ LED screen with Sony’s “Reality Display” technology. Boosted with a 1.4 Ghz Snapdragon processor, 8.1 MP camera as well as what Sony is calling 3D and 2D sweep panorama photography. You can shoot photos or video then use HDMI out and view the content in full 3D on your HDTV.
The Xperia Arc S will also ship with many of Sony’s increasingly popular services such as Music Unlimited, and Video Unlimited for all the streaming of digital content one would ever need.
Nikolaus Scheurer, Head of Product Marketing at Sony Ericsson said: “Xperia™ arc S is the fastest and most entertaining Xperia™ to date and it clearly demonstrates how the Xperia™ family are the best smartphones to experience great entertainment services such as Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited.”
The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S is up to 25% faster than the previous generation and will be the best Xperia device yet. All powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread. So far we don’t have any actual pricing or availability, but Sony has said it will be available later in the year and possible as soon as October.

Sony Ericsson Nozomi Flagship Phone may see worldwide launch

The Sony Ericsson team is still alive and kicking and now some new details are claiming we might see the SE Nozomi (aka LT26i/LT26a) handset launch soon. What is even better is this new HD powerhouse smartphone may see a global release according to some leaked information. The SE Nozomi first leaked back a few weeks ago and even though it probably wont have a dual-core processor the rest of the hardware specs sure look impressive.

If the leaked details are to be believed the Nozomi will have a 1.4 Ghz Qualcomm S2 single-core processor, Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread, as well as a 4.3″ HD display with a 1280x720p resolution. We’ve seen that listed on a lot of devices over the past few weeks so most likely it’s coming, and soon.
The initial details on this phone were slating it for an early fall launch over in Japan but thanks to a few leaked tips, it is not said to be launching this fall in Japan but also will see a global release. The model numbers listed above (LT26i/LT26a) appear to be two different models that may end up launching in the U.S. with different frequencies and on two separate carriers. Sony hasn’t launched a lot of Android devices statewide but things may soon be changing.

Video Preview of the Sony Ericisson Xperia Android 2.3.4 Update

Shortly after announcing that the entire 2011 lineup of Sony Ericsson Xperia device will receive an update to Android 2.3.4 sometime in October, the Sony Ericsson Product Blog has released a video preview of some of the new features we can expect. The 3D sweep panorama feature looks pretty intriguing and the update will introduce native screen captures. Check out the video for a better look.

Sony Ericsson unveils the neo V and offers details on Android 2.3.4 update for entire 2011 range

Sony Ericsson has made a couple important announcements today that fans of Android and SE devices will like. Sony Ericsson has a new smartphone that will be landing in select markets during Q4 2011 called the Xperia neo V. The smartphone will feature the unique Facebook inside Xperia software and rock a 3D sweep camera. The smartphone will be offered in white, blue, and silver colors, measures 116 x 57 x 13mm, and weighs 126g.

The device will run Android Gingerbread 2.3.4 and uses a 1GHz Snapdragon MSM8255 processor. That camera I mentioned has a 5MP resolution and a 16x digital zoom. It also features face detection, autofocus, and LED flash. It will also geo tag and has tons more features. The screen is a 3.7-inch TFT Reality Display with the Mobile BRAVIA Engine. A front camera is integrated for video chats and the rear cam can record 720p video.
The official 2.3.4 update for the entire Xpreia line will bring with it the 3D Sweep panorama feature for all of the Android device SE offers. It will also add Facebook inside Xperia V2, Swipe Text input, and the ability to capture screenshots. The update also allows Google Talk with Video Chat and a lot more. The 2.3.4 update will hit in October for select markets.

Sony Ericsson Live Walkman Announced, Runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread

The Walkman brand I’m sure many of you used back in the days isn’t dying out anytime soon. The folks at Sony plan to keep it chugging along and today they have announced a new Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman handset running the best OS around, Android of course. Thinking back on the huge Walkman disk player I carried around in my younger days before the iPod was fun, but the 128 CD carry case I also tugged around wasn’t. Now we can just throw all that music on a micro SD card and throw it in the new Live Walkman smartphone.

Today the ageless Walkman brand continues with this Android offering. We have a decent little mid-range phone here and this Walkman will sport a 3.2-inch 480 x 320 touchscreen display powered by a single-core 1GHz processor with 380MB of RAM. You even get a front facing camera so you can video chat and listen to music at the same time. 5 megapixel rear camera and all those other goodies like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, DLNA and even Sony’s xLOUD system for enhanced audio output.
The Sony Ericsson Live Walkman is set to arrive sometime around October and will have Android 2.3 Gingerbread on board. Sony mentions it will come featuring a built-in Track ID app as well as there usual Qriocity music and video streaming service. The press image does also show the widget for the Spotify music streaming service making us believe it might come pre-installed too, but we cant know for sure. Why they’d show that and their own Qriocity at the same time beats me. More details at the press release below.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play spotted dressed in Orange, Arc wearing White

We have seen both the SE Xperia Play and the Xperia Arc more than a few times. Today they’ve both been spotted in different flavors than we are used to. First off is the Xperia Play wearing a fancy Orange outfit and then the Xperia Arc is dress in White. These pictures are coming out of a SE launch conference in Asia so they could just be special devices, or we might see these flavors hit the shelves in select regions.

Last time we saw the Xperia Arc it was unlocked and for sale in the US but only with Blue or Silver color options, but now photos are showing they might also have a White model for those in need. While these aren’t anything special or new it’s always fun to see new colors. Just think, an Orange Xperia Play rocking CM7 sounds nice right?

More details on both of these phones can be seen over on the Xperia Blog who is also covering the conference where these phones were spotted. While the Orange colored Play might just be a unique device someone brought to the show we did see a Xperia Play with HDMI-Out a few months ago back in June, so it’s pretty possible they’ve still been making changes although that was a developer model. Either way these are fun and new, so thought we’d share. Enjoy your weekend!

Sony Ericsson XPERIA mini pro on sale now

Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA mini pro has gone on sale in the UK, with carrier Vodafone offering the diminutive Android smartphone from free on new two year agreements from £20.50 ($34) per month. Packing a 3-inch touchscreen, slide-out physical keyboard and a 5-megapixel camera with video recording support, the mini pro is being positioned as Sony Ericsson’s take on the Facebook Phone concept, thanks to its Facebook Inside XPERIA support.

That boosts the integration of the social network throughout Sony Ericsson’s customized Gingerbread build, with Facebook events automatically showing up in the calendar, the ability to “Like” music you’re playing or other things directly from the relevant app, and automatic gallery sync complete with comments. Obviously there’s the usual Android Market support as well, all in a compact 92 x 53 x 18 mm chassis.

Limited edition Xperia Play smartphone surfaces in Minecraft livery

If you are a big fan of the Minecraft game that was shown off for the Xperia Play smartphone back during E3 you will get a kick out of this device. A special edition of the smartphone has surfaced on eBay from Mojang that is decked out for fans of Minecraft. The smartphone has some very cool graphics for fans of the game.

The back and sides of the phone are covered in the pixilated blocks of the game and the screen has a background that matches right up to the art on the side and back of the phone making the Xperia Play have all around Minecraft decoration. The smartphone is on eBay right now, and the new smartphone has 53 bids and is up to $1,350. The phone is listed as new.
Apparently, the auction is for the device ahead of the listing of another one just like it for a contest on Gamescom.  It has a 4-inch 854 x 480 screen, a microSD card slot, 512MB of RAM, and 1GB of internal storage among other things. The money made from the sale will be donated to charity.

HTC, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson sound off on Google’s Motorola acquisition

Early Monday morning, Google announced that it will acquire Motorola for $12.5 billion. Google CEO Larry Page explained the acquisition will help bolster the tech giant’s patent portfolio and that his company will continue to “work with all [of its partners] to deliver outstanding user experiences.” While it may seem that Motorola will now have the upper hand in creating Android smartphones, execs from Samsung, Sony Ericsson, HTC, and LG have all issued statements in support of the acquisition. “We welcome today’s news, which demonstrates Google’s deep commitment to defending Android, its partners, and the ecosystem,” J.K. Shin, president of Samsung’s Mobile Communications division said. “I welcome Google’s commitment to defending Android and its partners,” Sony Ericsson president and CEO Bert Nordberg said. “We welcome the news of today’s acquisition, which demonstrates that Google is deeply committed to defending Android, its partners, and the entire ecosystem,” HTC’s CEO Peter Chou added. “We welcome Google’s commitment to defending Android and its partners,” LG’s president and CEO Jong-Seok Park said. The deal should certainly help Google defend Motorola, Samsung and HTC in their ongoing patent battles with Apple and other companies, though it remains to be seen how the acquisition might affect the Android ecosystem in the long run.

Sony Ericsson LT18i Ayame benchmark leak also suggests 1.4 Ghz CPU

Earlier today we mentioned the recently leaked SE Nozomi with a 720p display and now we are seeing another leak hit the inbox. Just like the Nozomi the “Ayame” leak suggests the device will indeed be powered by a Qualcomm S2 Snapdragon processor speeding along at 1.4 Ghz. Sadly this device is listed with a standard 480×854 resolution and no 720p here.

While benchmarks can always be cheated or altered this shows another device coming from Sony Ericsson soon. If the benchmark is to be believed this phone sounds similar to the Xperia Arc but with a faster processor boosted up to 1.4 Ghz. The Ayame will also be running on Android and it shows 2.3.4 in the benchmark with a pretty impressive NenaMark score of 46.80 which is pretty high for a single-core device.
We recently saw the HTC Vigor dual-core leak on the same benchmark with much lower scores but then it has a 1280x720p display so it has a lot more work to dish out. Whether these leaked benchmarks are to be trusted or believed are up to you, the readers. According to our source the LT18i Ayame will see a global release but nothing has been confirmed.

Sony Ericsson Nozomi Leaked, 1.4 Ghz CPU and 4.3″ 720p display

Some new leaked information from some anonymous tipsters is suggesting that Sony is prepping a few nice handsets to be released soon. The main leaked device is codenamed “Nozomi” and should be available sometime in November. The details and specs are the important part as this leak suggests Sony Ericsson will be getting a pretty nice handset. The model number listed was SO-02D and the specs leaked are after the break.

The leaked screenshot shows it running Android with a pretty UI overlay. The device should feature a 1.4GHz single-core Snapdragon S2 processor (MSM8655T) with Adreno 205 GPU and 4.3-inch display with 1280 × 720 pixel resolution. We have started seeing this 720p HD resolution more and more but nothing actually official from any of the leaks has been seen. The Nozomi leak also mentions a micro-SIM like the iPhone 4 currently uses.

A few more pictured were quickly leaked over at the xperiablog but for now that is about all the details we have. From the picture above you can clearly make out the model number, screen resolution, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread as well as a few other things but the rest of the details are missing. Hopefully some actual device pictures are leaked soon and we will find out more on whether this will be released globally or just in Japan. We will be digging for more details shortly.

Sony Ericsson to reveal Xperia X10 Mini, Mini Pro successors next week?

It is rumored that Sony Ericsson will launch the successors to its Xperia X10 Mini and Mini Pro Android devices in May, and the launch could take place as early as next week.
Codenamed Mango and Smultron, these phones run on Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread builds and feature 1 GHz processors. Other specs are likely to include three inch displays clubbed with 5MP camera and added front cam.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play And Arc Available From Best Buy Canada Tomorrow

Once again, we find that the selection of Android phones available to those in Canada is increasing both in size and quality. The next two additions to that ever-growing range of devices available in the Great White North are to be the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY and arc. According to a press release from Best Buy Canada, as of April 28th, these two great new handsets will be available on Rogers.

Either one of these Gingerbread-running beauties will cost you $99 on a new 3 year contract. That’s no typo, 3 year contracts are the norm up in Canada (it’s something we’re working on.) But, hey, at least you get a sweet new phone for $99 and Best Buy will even throw in a $50 in-store gift card. So, if you are one of the few Canadians who isn’t working through a 3 year term already, or it’s time for you to upgrade, roll on down to Best Buy tomorrow and check out the two hottest new phones in Canada.

Xperia Mini Pro II Shown Side-By-Side With Original

It’s not like Sony Ericsson to allow leaks to go on for so long without as much as a quick mention of a device’s existence (with the Xperia Play being an obvious exception), but we still haven’t learned about what looks to be the successor to the Xperia Mini Pro.
This time, it’s shown up in a slew of new images alongside the very device it’s replacing. The differences in hardware are clear, but it still won’t stray too far from Sony Ericsson’s original model both in hardware and software. Check out a few more shots at the source link.
