‘Chromecast HD’ tipped to run Google TV 12, Amlogic S805X2 SoC

A few months back, Google unveiled the Chromecast with Google TV in India after a gap of two years. Now, the tech giant is preparing a cheaper version of the streaming device. According to the latest rumors, it will be labeled as “Chromecast HD”. Here is more about the upcoming device, including specifications and other details.

Chromecast HD

As mentioned, the device will be marketed as “Chromecast HD”. However, the company did not confirm this. Although the code suggests so. Further, we have an idea about the processor, operating system, and more.

Under the hood, it will equip the Amlogic S805X2 chipset. The processor will offer support for AV1 decoding that the existing Chromecast lacks. Unfortunately, to adjust the cost, the chipset used is a fairly large downgrade from the 4K model. It limited the video output to 1080p and does not have the same raw power. In addition, the capacity limit is also dropped to 1.5GB of RAM.

On the bright side, the upcoming Chromecast HD will run Android 12 out of the box, making it the first device to run this software. To recall, the original Chromecast is still based on Android 10.

Another takeaway from the cheaper model is that it will come with virtual A/B seamless updates support with compression. This means that the update will be more frequent for the end user.

On a related note, the same device was also spotted on the Bluetooth SIG certification as “Google Chromecast.” The listing confirms its launch in India. All we have to do is wait. Till then, we expect the device to cost around $30.
