Asus Transformer Prime’s quad-core Tegra 3 processor gets benchmarked

Speed junkies, prepare to meet your next enabler. The Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime is expected to be the first device to run Nvidia’s quad-core Tegra 3 processor when it’s announced on November the 9th, and some eagle-eyed testers have the found processor and component speed benchmarks in the AnTuTu database. Needless to say, this thing is a beast.

The 1.4Ghz quad-core processor scored 7,596 points on the AnTuTu database. Specifics aren’t given, but it looks like the Transformer Prime is pushing near the 10,000 mark, easily besting all comers including the new Galaxy Nexus. It looks like the Tegra 3 is beating everything else except in one strange exsmple: 3D graphics. There, the Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S II and Optimus 2X look like they’ve got a better score, though that could be an error in testing or  trick of the scaling bar.
You can see the results for yourself – AnTuTu is a free download on the Android Market. As for when you’ll be able to get a Prime tablet for yourself, we know that Asus is planning an announcement on November the 9th, but there’s still no word on pricing or availability. In the meantime, curb your enthusiasm with a teaser video for the Transformer Prime, then one for the Tegra 3 processor.

ASUS Transformer Prime heads through the FCC, Tegra 3 revealed in teardown [Update]

The soon to be released and instantly popular ASUS Transformer Prime quad-core tablet has just hit the FCC, I’m getting excited just thinking about it. We’ve already seen it in the wild a few times and now its making a quick pit stop at the FCC before heading to the shelves — and our hands.

We were hoping to learn a few new juicy details from the filing bud sadly that isn’t the case although we know plenty already. The Transformer Prime tablet will be just 8.9mm thin while packing the extreme power of the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor. Coming first with Android Honeycomb it will very quickly be updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. First teased in a promo video by ASUS, then quickly followed with an official landing page to keep us all patiently waiting.
Most of the important details are hidden in secrecy in the filings, I was hoping to see some sort of HSPA+ or even LTE bands on board but they didn’t reveal anything of that nature sadly. First shown off by ASUS execs at AsiaD and said to be coming soon a recently leaked roadmap confirms the Transformer Prime will be officially announced November 9th. We should be seeing and hearing plenty about this awesome new flagship tablet from ASUS and NVIDIA in the coming days so be prepared for the power that is the Tegra 3, and stay tuned for more information.
Update: Thanks to wirelessgoodness we now have teardown pictures revealing the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, wireless capabilities and more all in the gallery below.

Asus roadmap leaked: Transformer Prime Nov. 9, more tablets in Q1 2012

An internal document shedding some light on Asus’ upcoming Android plans tells us a little more about the quad-core Eee Pad Transformer Prime, and that two “hero products” will be launching next spring. In between revenue results and media coverage, the presentation mentions a November 9th launch for the Transformer Prime – already confirmed by an Asus executive – and notes that Asus has shipped 1.6 million units of the original Transformer and the Eee Pad Slider.

The document (PDF link) tells us a lot of what we already know about the Transformer Prime. Like its predecessor it will have an optional keyboard attachment, essentially making it an Android netbook when equipped. The Prime is following in the design footsteps of Asus’ Zenbook line of laptops, leading the company to note its “Beauty/Fashion” appeal. The most interesting tidbit in the presentation comes near the end, when Asus notes that the Transformer Prime is “Leading in quad core & ICS”. That’s a definite indication that the Prime will be the very first Ice Cream Sandwich tablet when it launches, though it could also mean that Asus is simply planning a quick update.
The Transformer Prime is exciting in its own right, but what about those “hero products” slated for Q1 2012? An update to the Eee Pad Slider is possible, but might not be all that likely: the integrated keyboard tablet sold only a fraction of the volume of the Transformer. A more exciting possibility is that Asus is finally preparing a retail release for its Padfone concept device. With Ice Cream Sandwich bridging the gap between Android’s smartphone and tablet development arms, the time is right for the smartphone/tablet dock form factor to make its grand entrance.

ASUS Transformer Prime tablet pictured with new keyboard dock

The ASUS Transformer Prime is set to be one awesome quad-core tablet, most likely rocking Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and the NVIDIA Tegra 3. Today its been spotted along with its keyboard dock friend showing off its sleek design and aluminum frame. It was recently teased on video and ASUS has also launched an official page for the Prime.

First seen in the wild a few days ago with some ASUS execs at the AsiaD show, today we are getting another look at the hardware posing with its main selling point. That being the keyboard dock that “transforms” it into a powerful notebook machine. You can see the similarities although this time around they’ve gone for a brushed aluminum design and some fancy black chicklet-style keys. Looks a bit like a MacBook if you ask me, but that isn’t a bad thing.

These spy shots of the new tablet and keyboard dock were found on a chinese website but were quickly taken down. Our friends from Notebook Italia were quick enough to save a few for our viewing pleasure. We have a 10″ display as usual along with some audio ports, micro-HDMI and a micro-SD slot as well. While being shown at AsiaD it was also stated that we will get an official announcement and full details on November 9th. We expect to hear some juicy details regarding that new quad-core processor inside and Ice Cream Sandwich so be sure and stay tuned for the full details come November 9th.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime landing page rolls out

Those of you who were disappointed that the Galaxy Nexus missed its Prime moniker are in luck: it looks like the tablet formerly known as the Transformer 2 will get it instead. Asus has pot together a landing page for the “Eee Pad Transformer Prime”, thrilling Android tablet fans and children of the 80s together in one fell swoop. The page is quick to point out the tablet’s Nvidia Tegra 3 “Kal-El” quad-core processor and thin new design.

The website doesn’t mention a release date ,but if you believe Asus’ Jonney Shih, they’ll be announcing the second-generation Transformer on November the 9th. Other confirmations that Mr. Shih was nice enough to divulge include a super-thin 8.3mm frame and a 10-inch screen, likely the same one as in the original. The signature keyboard dock looks a little different, which probably means it won’t be interchangeable with the previous generation. Pricing and availability are up in the air, but considering how successful the original Eee Pad Transformer was at $399, I can’t see Asus messing with it too much.
Check out the sci-fi preview video of the Transformer Prime below:

One interesting thing I notice: have a gander at those navigation buttons on the screen. They don’t look anything like standard Honeycomb, but they don’t look exactly like the Ice Cream Sandwich navigation buttons either. That means one of two things: Asus has taken liberties with Honeycomb and done a little  skinning, or those are the tablet versions of Ice Cream Sandwich’s nav buttons, reworked for a larger interface. Okay, maybe three things: it’s a production render and there’s no way to make any real judgement either way. But given how much Asus has been talking up Ice Cream Sandwich, it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see the Transformer Prime launch with Ice Cream Sandwich or get a quick upgrade.
We wait with breathless anticipation for the official announcement, tentatively set for November 9th.

ASUS officially confirms ICS coming to the Transformer

Okay, so I know this isn’t really anything new because we’ve all been hinting at this well before ICS was officially announced, but today ASUS has officially told everyone over on Twitter that the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer will be getting Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich soon. We heard a few rumors yesterday, but they themselves have confirmed the good news today.

If you’ve been following @ASUS you’ve probably seen a few awesome tweets from them lately, including the recently released Transformer 2 teaser video. Apparently ASUS will now be calling it the Transformer Prime (genius huh?) and it will be coming with ICS and a Kal-El quad-core processor from NVIDIA in the form of the Tegra 3.
We’ve heard rumors that ASUS was working closely with Google to be the first tablet with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and while we still aren’t sure what tablet will launch with it first, most likely it will be the Transformer 2 shown off on stage last night, and that will be formally announced on November 9th. Most likely Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will be arriving on a few tablets like the original Transformer, Xoom, and others once the code is released. We’ll be hearing plenty more on ICS tablets in the coming days and weeks so get ready.

Asus says original Transformer will get Ice Cream Sandwich

The EEE Pad Transformer is an impressive and versatile tablet, and just because Asus is preparing a successor with an insane quad-core processor doesn’t mean it should be left behind. Fortunately, that does not appear to be the case: Pocket-lint is quoting a source inside Asus that says the original Transformer will be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Unfortunately, the source didn’t give a timeframe for the software update.

Despite running on hardware that’s nearly a year old in development terms, the original Transformer is no slouch when it comes to specifications. The 1GHz Tegra 2 processor and a full gigabyte of memory handle Honeycomb just fine, and should be up to the task of Ice Cream Sandwich without any problem. It’s encouraging to see Asus confirm that ICS is coming to its current customers, especially after chairman Jonney Shih hinted that the upgrade could come before the end of the year.
Currently Google is expected to release the Ice Cream Sandwich open-source code two weeks or so after the Galaxy Nexus launches, and as we’ve been hearing for months, the new operating system is designed to play well with both smartphones and tablets. With the Transformer 2 announcement coming November 9th, it’s entirely possible that we could see the first Ice Cream Sandwich tablets hitting the market before New Years. We’ll keep you updated on the upgrade options for the Transformer and other Honeycomb tablets as news breaks.

Asus EEE Pad Slider tablet launching in the UK October 24th

Americans have had access to Asus’ EEE Pad Slider with its integrated slide-out keyboard for a while, but come next Monday, Brits can pick one up at their leisure. Asus has announced that the Slider will be available starting at £429.99, or about $680 USD. Retailers PC World and Curry’s will be the first to offer the tablet, both online and in-store.

In case you’ve forgotten, the Slider is a lot like the EEE Pad Transformer with a keyboard that tucks away when not in use, instead of detaching completely. The dual-core Tegra 2 processor runs at an impressive 1.2GHz, powering Honeycomb on the 10-inch 1280 x 800 screen. 32GB of on-board storage should be enough for all but the largest media collections.  The Slider is currently only available in WiFi form, and sadly, we haven’t heard anything about a mobile broadband version.

If you’re on the fence about a Transformer or Slider purchase, you might want to wait a few weeks. Asus has been teasing the upcoming Transformer 2 with a slick CG video, and an executive showed off the device on-stage while confirming its quad-core Tegra 3 processor. The official announcement is slated for November 9th, and considering what the executive said about Ice Cream Sandwich tablets, it could be ready to hit the market before the end of the year. We haven’t heard of a successor to the Slider, though, so if you’re heart is set on an all-in-one form factor, go right ahead.

Asus executive shows off Transformer 2 live, coming November 9th

We’ve been seeing a lot of the Asus Transformer 2 in the last few days, and now it’s been confirmed by none other than Asus executive Jonney Shih. Shih spoke at the AsiaD conference hosted by All Things D, where he pulled out what is almost certainly a nearly complete EEE Pad Transformer 3 and its keyboard attachment. Shih also confirmed that the tablet is using “Nvidia’s quad core processor”, which to our ears sound like the Tegra 3.

Speaking on the original Transformer, Shih noted that it’s easily one of thew most popular Honeycomb tablets, and that Asus is on course to sell 2 million of them this year alone. He also said that the company has great hopes for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and that tablets running the new software may be coming before the end of the year. The Transformer 2, according to Shih, will be formally announced on November 9th, and that the 10-inch slate will be a mere 8.3mm thin.

Rumors of the Transformer successor have persisted since the summer, when we first heard that Nvidia’s “Kal-El” Tegra 3 processor might make its debut in the device. That would certainly line up with the new video that Nvidia was showing off, not to mention the sci-fi inspired video that dropped today. Shih’s November 9th date is just a little later than a UK online retailer’s guess at November 7th, but that gives us some hope that the tablet may be coming sooner rather than later. It’s a bit of a conundrum: since the original Transformer was so solid I’d like a crack at the Transformer 2 as fast as possible, but the longer the release date is dragged out, the more likely it is that it’ll come pre-loaded with Ice Cream Sandwich.
When asked about the PadPhone, the dockable phone-tablet combo that Asus showed off in concept form months ago, Shih said that the company expects the phone to go through the carrier gauntlet for a Q1 2012 release.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer 2 flaunted on video

We have already heard speculation that the Eee Pad Transformer 2 tablet could be landing on November 7. We still don’t have a solid launch date for the new Android tablet. The device has now landed on a video giving us a bit of tease on the new tablet, and it looks pretty darn good. You have to catch little glimpses of the tablet in the video since there are no long looks.

You can glean some factoids from the video though like the tablet camera now gets an LED flash. The keyboard also appears to have a different design than the original Transformer, but it does still pack in USB connectivity. The big change that is spied on the video is a thinner overall design than the original. Asus has also moved away from a plastic chassis and gone to a metal chassis in the Transformer 2.
Asus has already confirmed the price of the tablet at $499 and has hinted that the tablet might pack in Android 4.0. We will hold judgment until we hear what the Transformer 2 has on the inside. However, at a glance it looks like a nice upgrade from the original.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer 2 ready to rock the UK

Are you on the lookout for the Asus Eee Pad Transformer 2? If you so happen to live across the pond, then you might be interested to know that this particular device is set to hit our friends in the UK this coming November 7th. While we know that Stateside, the price will remain the same as its predecessor, UK retailer Lambda-Tek already has set up a product page for the device, touting a price point of £537.85 for the slate.

Asus EEE Transformer 2 could be coming November 7th

We know that a successor to the Asus EEE Transformer is in the works, and now there’s some concrete evidence that the new tablet is coming soon. A UK online shop has a listing for the “Asus TF201″, which is probably the model number of the Transformer’s successor – the original’s official designation is TF101. A November 7th release date lines up nicely with previous rumors of a Q3/Q4 debut.

The original Transformer is one of the most popular Android Honeycomb tablets out there, so it’s no surprise that the update is on its way. According to previous leaks and the store listing, the Transformer 2 will feature a Tegra 3 processor (probably the much-anticipated Kal-El), a full gigabyte of RAM and (at least in this listing) 32GB of storage space. Unfortunately no further specifications or a photo is included. The price in the listing is 448 British pounds before taxes, which comes out to about $700 USD. Keep in mind that retail prices for computers and gadgets are often much higher across the pond. No mention is made of software, but if it really is coming so soon, Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich both seem possible.
The device is keeping its 10.1-inch screen, presumably with the current 1280 x 800 resolution intact. The store listing refers to the tablet as “gold”, but that could be a rather fanciful description of something like the current Transformer’s amber metallic hue. Keep in mind that stores often list products with estimated specifications and release dates, but the listing itself is a strong indicator that the Transformer 2 is coming sooner rather than later.

ASUS Transformer 2′s price to remain the same

One of the reasons why the HP TouchPad did so well after HP had announced their plans to discontinue webOS, was due to its massive price cut, which saw the webOS tablet drop to a mere $99 for the base model, which was a price even cheaper than certain digital photo frames! Amazon too decided to follow suit and announced that their Kindle Fire would only cost $199, even going as far as losing $10 per tablet sold.
Now if you were expecting this particular strategy to start being adopted by other tablet manufacturers, you may be in for a disappointment. While market watchers had expected ASUS to follow suit with their upcoming Eee Pad Transformers 2 tablet, the company’s CEO Jerry Shen stated that they had no plans on reducing the tablet’s price. The ASUS Eee Pad Transformer 2 is expected to go on sale for $499, which is priced similarly to the base model iPad 2.
However given that the first-generation Transformer did astonishingly well, it’s understandable that ASUS is confident that they will be able to achieve similar success with the Transformer 2 despite it being priced rather steeply. Only time will tell if ASUS’s strategy of sticking to their guns will pay off. No official word on when the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer 2 will be making an appearance.

Asustek and Acer join Tizen project, HTC said to be evaluating its decision

Just a day after news that the MeeGo operating system had met its demise and a new Samsung and Intel backed Linux OS called Tizen would rise to take its place, both Asustek and Acer have reportedly joined the project, with HTC “currently evaluating its decision”, reports Digitimes.
Tizen will be hosted by the Linux Foundation and will be jointly-created by Intel and Samsung, supporting multiple device categories including smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, netbooks and in-car devices.
MeeGo, the predecessor to Tizen, was put on deathwatch the minute Nokia announced that it was to invest heavily in Microsoft’s Windows Phone ecosystem. The company did release one MeeGo-powered device, the Nokia N9 – which launched to favourable reviews – but the company distanced itself from development of the platform as it looked to solidify its smartphone presence with the backing of Microsoft.
The platform will focus on HTML5 and other web standards, opening APIs that will “cover various platform capabilities” including messaging, multimedia, camera, network, and social media.
Digitimes adds:
Application stores will also merge the current resources of Intel’s MeeGo and Samsung’s Bada. Tizen has already won support from Panasonic Mobile Communications, NTT DoCoMO and SK Telecom, and a software development kit (SDK) is scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2012.
Following Google’s acquisition of Motorola Mobility, many of the top smartphone vendors have begun evaluating their reliance on the Android platform to ensure they remain competitive should Google shift its approach with the operating system. Samsung has said it will continue development of its Bada platform, with HTC also declaring it has been looking into either buying or developing its own OS.

ASUS TOUGH Android Honeycomb 7″ tab hits Japan

We’ve seen plenty of smartphones over the recent past released that are tough, water resistant, and can handle most situations but we haven’t seen many for Android Honeycomb tablets. Today ASUS has unveiled the ASUS TOUGH ETBW11AA Tablet. The ASUS TOUGH is both water, and dust resistant, and comes with 4G WiMAX as well an impressive 1280×800 resolution all on that 7″ frame.

Coming in with a pretty unique form factor it does have some usual specs. Such as the NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core 1 GHz processor, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. We can expect Android 3.2 Honeycomb because of the 7″ 1280 x 800 resolution display. While this isn’t the thinnest tablet around (see photo below) it does look to be able to handle just about any situation given all that added “protection” if you ask me.

Along with a huge 7,400 mAh battery it also features Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, EVDO Rev.A and GPS, along with mini-USB, micro-SD and a 5-megapixel camera. It’s said to be able to survive 76cm drops onto straight concrete and live to tell about it, as well as remain fully in-tact. Instead of calling this Iron clad we’ll just say rubber clad, coming in around 215 x 132 x 20-22.2 mm and weighing 620g on the scales. All that protection comes with a price — and that is the size.
With a battery that will last all day, and a tablet handling all conditions this should be great for those out and about, especially those on-site construction type workers. The ASUS TOUGH ETBW11AA 7″ Honeycomb tablet should be available in Japan this November but we have no details yet on pricing.

Asus Eee Slate B121 business tablet

Love getting all dressed up in a suit, and heading off to corporate meetings is your cup of tea? Well, then make sure you have the right kind of tablet device to go along with you, and an iPad is way too casual, while the BlackBerry PlayBook does have an air of authority, the lack of decent apps have proved to be its Achilles’ Heel. Hopefully Asus’ latest Eee Slate B121 business tablet will not suffer from that fate, as it intends to deliver power, portability and security features in a single device, targeting businesses, health care facilities, and other institutions as the market of choice.
You will not find Android running here, but rather, the Intel Core i5-470UM processor will be there to keep a copy of the Windows 7 Professional operating system chugging along nicely, delivering PC-like performance on-the-go. The clever use of an ultra-low voltage Intel Core i5 processor allows the B121 to remain a mere 0.67” thin, tipping the scales at only 2.56 lbs.

Asus to launch 5-6 Intel-powered Ultrabooks in October

Asustek Computer is set to host a product launch conference for Ultrabooks in New York in October with prices to range from US$899-US$1,999, according to company chairman Jonney Shih.
Asustek will release 5-6 Ultrabook models in October with screen sizes of 11.6- or 13.3-inch.
Shih also noted that the recent price drop of several key components such as panels and DRAM has enabled the company to lower the overall cost of Ultrabooks, and with HP having abandoned its PC business, while Dell and Toshiba are expected to turn cautious about Ultrabooks, the new market is likely to be mainly propped up by Acer and Asustek.
Although Intel still has not accept downstream partners' requests to cut Ultrabook CPU prices, the company has offered to provide extra assistance to allow its partners to launch sub-US$1,000 models, according to sources from upstream component players.

Price drop on the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer to $350

As the Transformer 2 is soon to arrive as early as next month, looks as if the price of original Eee Pad Transformer is being dropped to $350. Many of the online retailers out there still have it listed for its original price of $400 for the 16GB, and $470-$500 for the 32GB version. But Walmart has decided to offer the $50 discount for the 16GB model.
It seems logical that this discount is likely related to the fact that the Transformer 2 is soon to be shipped out. And there’s nothing wrong with that, as the Eee Pad is a great device, became very popular and still is. With its innovative form factor that incorporates an optional keyboard dock, it’s no wonder many searching for a great tablet were drawn to it. So since ASUS has continued to keep the first-generation Transformer up-to-date with Honeycomb, this deal is not something to be overlooked.

ASUS Transformer minor OTA Update rolling out, Netflix now working

Today ASUS has started the rollout for a small OTA update to the ASUS EeePad Transformer Tablet. From initial reports the update brings the Transformer up to build 8.6.5.9 and many are reporting that Netflix is now fully supported. We saw the Netflix logo appear on the homepage for the ASUS Transformer but we’ve still yet to see any official comments or support as of late.

While users are claiming Netflix still doesn’t show up in the market, you can download it manually and it works without root or making any changes. Download Netflix here and let us know if it works in the comment section below. The Asus Transformer recently received Android 3.2 Honeycomb so this could also bring a few changes and bug fixes for that, but we don’t have a change-log to confirm any details thus far.

This latest OTA update that is rolling out to Transformer users now also brings with it an update for the dock software. If you dock your Transformer that software will also be updated to version EP101-0213. We recently saw a few accessories and docks leak over on Amazon and this new software update might be just what was needed for those accessories.
Go ahead and check for updates and feel free to share any details, comments, or concerns in the comment field below.
